That kick return/fumble was a selfish play by Devin Smith last night. You cant blame the coach for that, I'm sure given Smith's inexperience at the position April would have been cautioned to be conservative. But Smith sees the situation as well as we do. Kembrell Tompkins has taken his spot as the 3rd WR, Kerley is making a contribution and Devin Smith has become the 5th man out, delegated to special teams. He wanted to provide a spark, but as others stated he had no business taking that ball out. It was a selfish, stupid play. You dont win games with selfish stupid players, so Smith is going to need to take a step back, reexamine his work effort and start thinking about how he can help the team. I think he can be a good player, but it seems he doesn't appear to be very smart.
Can we please pump the brakes, he's a rookie. a young player that made a dumb mistake. Shouldn't have taken the ball out, which contributed to the loss but not fully on him. The team will develop, theres a lot of young guys that are still learning on the fly.
No we can not. This was a CRUCIAL fundamental blunder, and as a member of this team, he should be under the same scrutiny as anyone else. There is nothing specific to NFL football that says that you need to hold on to a kickoff. That same fundamental principal applies to every level of the game, be it high-school, college, whatever. This was not a matter of not recognizing a formation or running the wrong route. There is no excuse whatsoever to losing that ball in that fashion. Maybe part of the reason the Jets are in the shape they have been in for so long is that NO ONE other than coaches are ever held accountable for anything, with the exception of IK Enemkpali.
Why not? You would have been spared Two years of DeWayne Robertson, and at least a year of Kyle Wilson.
So by that logic, Ivory should be cut too? He fumbled as well. Calm down bro, turnovers are part of the game. Granted they were both knuckle head plays. Guys just not protecting the ball on contact but neither guy is a known fumbler. Tbh iwas more nervous about Ridley getting more playing time as he had fumbling issues in NE
hackett WTF is wrong with you? you are like a PMSing woman. always way too dramatic, settle down. maybe eat some chocolate, have some cranberry juice, take some tylenol. It works for my old lady when she's like this I used to think your Kyle Wilson hate was funny but now I realize you are just a whiny baby
"Devon Smith Absolutely SUCKS!!!" wails one hysterical Jets' fan. I can just see your mascara running while you typed this.
So Sanchez should have been cut after week 6 in 2009 where he threw 5 INT's? So Calvin Pryor should have been cut after he whiffed on the 99 yard Lamar Miller run? He has improved 10 fold and is the x-factor for our defense less than 12 months later. Thank goodness you aren't the GM. No knee jerk reactions please.
That's what happens when you put a rookie in to do a job he's hasn't done before. I blame Bowles for that fumble. Unfortunately, stuff like that always seems to happen to the Jets. They never seem to learn. Remember Jalen Saunders? Don't know why they don't use Kerley, he's the most reliable kick fielder the Jets have. Also think Bowles erred at the end of the game by not kicking the FG on 4th and about 5 with about 3+ min. left in the game.
