As for Fitzpatrick’s thumb getting cleaned up, there were a wide variety of opinions on how long such a procedure would sideline the Jets No.1 QB.

Dr. Eric Freeman, director of orthopedics at Mercy Medical Center on Long Island and the director of sports medicine at Molloy College, said surgery would likely cause Fitzpatrick to miss a minimum of 4-6 weeks. Dr. Michael Hausman, the chief of hand and elbow surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, said last week he thought it might take 10-12 weeks. On the brighter side, former Chargers physician Dr. David Chao tweeted he didn’t think Fitzpatrick would miss any time.

Neither doctor The News spoke to had precise details of the injury and based their comments only on public information about the quarterback’s thumb. Asked why Fitzpatrick might opt to have surgery now, Freeman said, “If the thumb is grossly unstable, then you start to worry about doing permanent damage.”

Hausman must not be a Jets fan!

    Actually, a better writeup here.

    The key bit:
However, if the Jets' doctors and trainers are able to stabilize the thumb—which they've already done in the week since the injury—Hausman said it's possible Fitzpatrick could continue to play without missing a beat.

"Surgery would be the beginning of the healing process," Hausman said.

If Fitzpatrick were to postpone surgery until after the season—the Jets have at least eight more weeks of games remaining—Hausman said Fitzpatrick could run the risk of having the ligament shrivel and shrink, which would require a more-complex tendon graft to be done to re-attach it to the bone.

Speaking of surgery, when is Bowles getting that testicular transplant? This conservative BS at the end of halves and when we have the lead is getting out of hand.

I hope Fitzy can stay in at QB, he gives us hope on offense.

Bowles and Gailey are making mostly the right moves for the kind of team they have.

If you ask Fitzpatrick to air it out when you don't need too and when the opponent is going to be looking for it then the picks will start to come. We're at mid-season and Fitzpatrick is on pace for 26 TD's and 14 picks. He's on pace to get sacked about 10-12 times all year. Right now the Jets offense is as stable as it has been since Chad left. That's where the Jets need to be at this point with this personnel.

They're going to have to go to a more pass heavy offense soon if Mangold doesn't come back and things aren't going to get better for us at that point. Keeping Fitzpatrick managing the game is the ticket to the playoffs and maybe making some noise once we get there. It's going to be about the defense this year and managing the game on offense. What needs to get fixed is the defense.

    Doesn't sound too credible.

It's going to happen Friday. The possibility he still misses a game is out there.

Wow. I just can't imagine he's not going to miss multiple games, much less one.

Someone said 4-6 weeks typically but I can't imagine him having the surgery if he wasn't confident he'd only miss 1-2 games. I agree with you I definitely don't see a situation where he doesn't miss any time at all.

The Mt Sinai specialist said he might not miss any time post surgery. If they can get the glove back on.

1 min 40 sec, 3 timeouts at your own 20 and you run the ball 3 straight times when your leading rusher is average 1 ypc and punt it with a punter who is dreadful this year only to give the opposing team easy field position and momentum at half time? I think its pretty fair to say that isnt the right move. More overly conservative garbage that is going to cost this team sooner or later. No one is saying for Fitz to throw bombs but at least try to get a first down or two there.

Wish he'd just gotten the surgery right away. If he was going to be out a few weeks better to do it sooner. But my guess is that the ligament must be completely torn. I've known basketball players who go the whole season putting off surgery for partially torn ligaments..

why wouldn't he just wait until after the season? what's the point of playing some games and then getting surgery? I can't remember ever hearing that happen.

He said that if he waits too long the ligament will shrivel up and he'll need multiple procedures

One question I had in watching NFL countdown prior to the game... why the fuck was Fitz catching the ball when he was warming up his arm? The receivers were tossing him back the ball and he was catching it with both hands.

Can someone text Bowles and volunteer to go catch the ball for Fitz during pregame warmups?
