theres a difference though '85. It depends on what the issue is. IF Geno Smith had a solid base: game knowledge, the ability to go through his progressions, pocket presence, etc.. but his problems were in terms of trying to make the big play too much.. going for the wrong high risk choice instead of the efficient choice, or ball placement or playing with too much variance I would agree with you. young QB mistakes. He will learn.

But that's not his problems. His problems are more glaring than that. It's almost the opposite. He has nice ball placement but is missing the solid base. His pocket presence is terrible and he makes basic game knowledge mistakes. He has terrible fundamentals. The stuff you should have by this point in your career.

Consider that play thats getting talked about a lot from last week, the ridiculous 4th quarter sideline "sack." You can even set aside the complete lack of situational awareness there, that taking a sack was the worst outcome, set that aside. He takes the snap and he's not even being rushed and he backs way up and rolls right??? Why?? they yell at QBs in high school for that. Surely Geno Smith has been told to STOP doing that throughout his career because any coach with any knowledge is going to tell him that's stupid and stay in the pocket like a real QB. But through an entire high school, 4 year college, and 2.5 year NFL career he still hasn't learned that? Why are we supposed to believe he's going to somehow figure that out AND take the next step to fix the common young QB mistakes I outlined in the first paragraph. The answer is, we're not. if he hasn't learned basic football fundamentals by now he's a lost cause and you are doing the team a disservice by wishing upon a star that he changes.

i don't even really know what you are trying to argue man. I'm not making the claim that the whole organization hates Geno Smith but I do believe they are pretty much completely ready to move on from him.

but they have always needed a backup QB. Even if Fitzpatrick was an ironman that would be true. Two weeks ago when he was fine that statement was true and I believed it. They don't want Petty to be the primary backup and since Geno Smith is under a favorable contract there is no real reason to cut him, regardless of how they feel about his prospects.

Quinton Coples is still on the roster for the same reasons. They are probably done with him in terms of thinking beyond this season but hey- they need a backup OLB and he's still under contract so they might as well keep him. They can't cut everyone

I am arguing against the notion that fitz starting this week is indicative of how they feel about geno.

You can say that every week. Fitz is the starter, he's good to go, he goes

Fitzpatrick starting ANY week with a healthy Geno Smith is indicative of how they feel about Geno Smith. If this organization believed in Geno Smith as the QB of this team both short and long term they'd started him as soon as he was ready to go after the jaw injury. Like every team does when their starting QB gets hurt- they return him when he is back healthy. Fitzpatrick hasn't been exactly lighting the league up anyway

I think both Qb's are capable of winning behind center of our offense. I'm just so sick of the Geno hate, that's why I'm most glad Fitz is starting. Fitz is smarter, Geno has better overall athleticism; they both are proven ability to win. Personally, I have no problem rooting for either. I just want the Jets to win. The major difference, I think, is that Geno is looked at under a microscope; and he has failed to identify/establish himself as a team leader. Too bad he wasn't able to mount a big comeback win for the Jets in Oakland, bc that would have instantly changed his brand image. Geno lacks pocket presence, has been a bit poor taking care of himself (concerning hits) and taking care of the football; and he has played with some bad players around him in the past; which could be a catalyst for all of his interceptions/turnovers. I think the majority of the hate is this bad perception of him; that he probably won't ever be able to get rid of with the Jets

In the end, the players have rallied around Fitz...he's our guy. He is the one that is going to lead this team. As long as he can stay healthy I think the team will remain focused. If the unfortunate occurs and Fitz goes down again, geno takes center; the team instantly loses focus; and the fans pour on. Every geno mistake will be magnified x1000000.

    Let's go Fitz! Let's go Jets! Let's get a W!

True, but geno didn't get beat out by fitz and there has been no reason to sit him. Just because they didn't annoint geno (not that they should) doesn't mean they have given up either. I like how bowles has handled it and will not be surprised if geno is in camp competing next year, provided he doesn't get extended looks this year that shows he should be cut.

I think the logic here is that there are a few TGGers who thought Geno was the presumptive starter but for getting punched out, that he had somehow won the competition even before Fitz was 100% healthy from his broken leg, that once Geno came back from his IK vaca that he SHOULD get a shot to play because he possessed more "upside", that the coaching staff was 100% behind Geno and actually PREFERRED him over Fitz but for the injury.

By contrast, those in disagreement are of the opinion that he never won any competition, that he does not possess more upside (or any perceived upside is more than offset by his downside), that there was nothing to ever indicate that the coaching staff preferred Geno over Fitz and that if all the things were true that the Geno defenders (for want of a better word) said were true, then this would be the perfect opportunity to reinsert him into the starting QB position.

That Bowles has NOT done that is indicative of how the Geno defenders might have miscalculated and that the coaching staff in fact does NOT prefer Geno to Fitz.

Mind you, nothing here has any validity or is based on how the coaching staff ACTUALLY feels because none of us know.

It's just discussing who's opinions were closer to the truth.

I personally don't think we are done seeing Geno Smith in 2015. Only because I don't have strong faith that Fitzpatrick plays out the string. we'll probably see Geno Smith in relief again, maybe even starting a game or 2..

but I certainly think Geno Smith is done in terms of a viable starting option for the NYJ. When IK knocked him out and Bowles just moved on without pause to Fitzpatrick that said it all to me. This organization is done with him. The fact that they are choosing average QB play over a healthy Geno Smith says it all. You don't settle for an average veteran on a 1 year deal over a young player who has started games before unless you don't believe that young player is any good. (especially when that average veteran QB is playing injured!)

Idk about 2016- they could bring him back to "compete" but I don't think it will be a serious competition or one that he would win. I personally believe that if Geno Smith starts anymore games for the NYJ it will be as a backup QB, starting out of necessity, and not even as a guy who might win the job back

    So heres what we know.
Bowles stated it was genos job to lose.
Nothing geno did on the field lost him the job
Bowles stated it is now fitz's job to lose.
Nothing fitz has done has caused him to lose thw job to this point.
All this equals team has moved on from geno?

The difference is the team has played well with Fitz under center, had Geno came out and played like Carr it's likely Fitz would not be starting. Instead Geno took two of the most ridiculous sacks I've ever seen in my life and continues to not be able to read defenses, takes stupid hits, stares down receivers and gets his routes jumped etc... When Geno came in to replace a Fitz with torn ligaments in his hand it WAS Geno's job to lose again, and... he lost it.

no. we don't know that nothing Geno Smith did on the field cost him the job. In fact, we can operate under the opposite assumption. If that statement was true he would've assumed the starting job back when he was healthy in like what week 2.

its very possible that they were wavering on the Geno Smith/Fitzpatrick decision inside the doors at Florham Park prior to the punch

Maybe, fitz hasn't played that much better and wouldn't have been expected to win needing 35 pts. But you have a decent point.
My main point is the staff was ready to see geno in some extended action this season. They haven't because of a strange incident plus winning under fitz. I don't know if that makes them decide to move on from geno. Just my judgement on the situation

I think when Bowles started making platitudes about Geno, it was before either of them truly got a chance to play. He basically named Geno the starter before a practice was ever held. And while Fitz's leg was still healing.

If, as Geno defenders claim, that Bowles and Gailey truly prefer Geno over Fitz, why when this opportunity arises to reinsert Geno into the starting lineup, have they not done so?

Again, not talking about what the coaches ACTUALLY think, it's just refuting what Geno defenders have been arguing all along.

All we can go by are the beat writers take and anyone who went to t.c. practices. By all accounts it was geno.
I don't know how we could assume otherwise.Bowles stated his injury policy early on. Once your a starter you have to play your way out of it. Fitz hasn't.

There hasn't been an opportunity. And surely not enough evidence to suggest they are completely done with him.

P.s. i can't believe i got sucked into this argument. I have been avoiding them like the plague.
That said i am tapping out. Theres no winner in these arguments

The whole "Geno is the starter" was a fiction based upon his status last year and no other viable healthy starter.

Bowles named him the starter, but it was likely by default.

Who knows, had Fitz been 100% healthy Bowles might have STILL named Geno the starter but we'll never know.

    The opportunity just presented itself.

    Bowles chose.

we can assume by actions. actions that mean more than words. Bowles can tell the beat writers whatever he wants but ultimately who he decides to make his starter is the real indication of how he feels about a player.

and there's no just way in hell i'm going to believe they are still encouraged by Geno Smith but simply playing Ryan Fitzpatrick because they have an "injury policy." this is the NFL dude he's going to start who he thinks will win him the game
