I just read an article claiming we see Rick arrive at Alexandria at the end of last nights episode so "he must of survived the zombie horde. id i somehow completely miss this?
Thank you. By the end i wasn't paying as much attention and completely missed this. i'm looking forward to the turkey shoot of Alexandria vs thousands of zombies. i can't wait to see the Alexandrians have to deal with reality.
When I first started watching this episode, I was so ready for a boring Morgan backstory. I was surprised how well they did it. Good shit. I'm almost pining for the conflict between him and Rick now.
The episode was ok, but I hate the stupid "I'm a pretty decent fighter with a staff and kill zombies all the time...oh wait, Morgan isn't going to be able to kill this one, I better let it bite my back rather than killing it like I kill dozens of zombies every other day of my life" way they killed Eastman. Just make it 3 or 4 zombies, and he is fighting them off, and one gets him. The sacrifice seems so silly when we know he dies anyway and it is literally one stupid zombie. Other than that, it wasn't too bad an episode. I like the way they are running this season. Huge cliff hangers, jumping around, lots of action. Storyline is not just following the comics.
Yeah, that was a lame death. Pretty much all of the deaths on the show are lame, though. You live in a world where zombies are everywhere yet still one zombie can walk right up to you and kill you. And of course Glenn let's that one turd lead him into an alley, which is probably the dumbest place you can go when a zombie horde is wandering through town. Thankfully I haven't read the comics, otherwise I'd probably hate the show, similar to GoT.
I think the point of the lame deaths is to showcase that you cannot let your guard down for a second. But at this point i don't see how anyone watching the show isn't already fully aware of that fact. Though i thought this was sort of boring coming off the rollercoaster of the last few episodes, i am glad i understand Morgan now. It always drive me nuts when people go into their pacifist moral bullshit on this show but seeing this i at least can see his thought process. I believe Morgans days are numbered but i also think his death will bring back some of Rick's humanity.
I agree about the death--it was contrived. OTOH, silly heat of the moment things, thoughtless acts, and random tragedies get people killed all the time. I'll give you an interesting example: About two weeks ago I got up one night to take a leak (I know, TMI). The lights were out and I didn't see that my daughter had left her little potty step stool between the door and toilet so I stepped over it and started to fall. I barely righted myself, but if I hadn't I'd have hit out tile encased tub. This sucked was built in a tile mud was 3" deep a century ago and is solid as any cement construction. So if my head had his the edge of this tub I wouldn't be writing this today. At the very least I'd have had a concussion, at the worst I'd be dead. But this was just a random bit of silly shit that happens when you have a 3 1/2 year old and when you wake up and you're not thinking, right? Sadly, it happens and I got lucky. I guess I'm also lucky that my tub wasn't trying to jump up and bite me at the same time I was stumbling, right? So while I absolutely agree that the death sequences are usually contrived in TWD, some of them are really effective and/or plausible. Remember Noah's death? That was a really good sequence IMHO. I think the real issue people have is that it is assumed that if you can defend yourself then you should be able o survive against Zombies. This is actually what I find so compelling about this particular genre. Werewolves, Vampires, and other supposedly scary shit doesn't bother me simply because they all have weaknesses that can be overcome--zombies cannot be overcome. No matter how good you are at something eventually you will get tired, hungry, or thirsty. No matter how diligent you are eventually your guard will drop because complacency is normal and diligence cannot be maintained at a high level forever. And even if you manage to maintain diligence and make no mistakes there is a,ways the chance that you simply become overwhelmed by sheer force. For me THAT is scary. Something that I cannot fight and cannot beat. If I stand a chance then I will fight, and even if I don't I will fight, but the fear only begins to creep in when you start to think your fight is a hopeless one. Anyway, I've digressed.... Too often the writers of TWD make mistakes in how they handle or run the show, but there is enough they do right to make it really compelling. For example, I've always felt that there was an underlying discussion in the first season about the right to die. This season they are really getting into the argument about the preciousness of life. Do we really believe that? To what extent? Or is this just a line we chant at political rallies? If we do believe this then are we willing to risk our own lives (eg- like Eastman did) to prove the point or is does life have little enough value that people are disposable? As an historian I strongly believe that the concept that life is precious is a modern concept. Yet it is a particularly well placed concept in the TWD universe because the remnants of humanity would be needed for survival. So while fellow humans would be potential enemies who could cause harm and even kill you, without them there is no future and, hence, no continuation to life. Since the only known point to our existence is to continue ourselves, this literally makes life pointless. Ironic, isn't it? If you reject all those other human beings then life becomes pointless and if you accept them then you risk losing your life! The mother of all paradoxes.
I loved this episode. I'm also someone who rejects the knee-jerk pacifism we see nowadays, but I think this episode serves a purpose. I've read that TWD has come under criticism for making the argument that the only solutions in this world are violent ones. Introducing aikido/pacifistic concepts offers an alternative voice. However, I think offering this voice will simply help to hammer home the point about why this approach won't work in this circumstance. There are circumstances where pacifism is the best approach, it is just that I believe this world it not one of them. One other thing: even when the employment of violence is morally justified, as I believe it is here, it is imperative to maintain a moral compass. If you do not you can lose yourself and your humanity. Again, I think there are some good exposition devices being introduced here for that discussion.

I told my wife last week while we were watching the episode with the Wolves that I thought she was probably with them, scouting Alexandria.
