Considering he missed the entire preseason and is in a new offense and was thrown into the game with no starting rep time, I thought he was alright. He still had some bad mistakes like the throw that Woodson cut off and inept running into the sidelines but he also made some solid throws that got dropped and he had a rhythm going on in some duration(Particularly the 3rd) He was one of the least problems yesterday compared to the awful tackling, the inability to run the ball(Mangold or not)/lack of confidence to run on short yard situations and the inability to get after the QB.
Why the fuck does he always leave the pocket and veer off to his right for no reason? Whatever coach along the way that taught him that habit should turn in their clipboard. Worse though is that Smith continues to do it, time and time again. Stay in the pocket like a real QB. He veers off to his right and backs up when he's not even being rushed. That's shit they yell at high school QBs about
Best guess is the Jets punted because Bowles and Gailey thought it was the most point-positive thing they could do given Geno's inability to function under pressure. No point in giving him a 4th and long when he took 3rd and medium and turned it into 4th and long for no good reason.
@ elgoman Alex Smith has a pretty good arm he just can't read defenses for his life. That's why he's constantly checking down. His career stabilized when Harbaugh took half the field away and gave him half to read on each play. That's still where he is today in KC.
Alex Smith will never lead a team to a super bowl. Plays too conservatively, no balls to make the big time throws. Chiefs should be starting Chase Daniel at this stage as they are 3-5.
Alex Smith is a good example of Geno's upside at this point if he actually started to get it. High percentage - low risk throws, checking down all the time, generally not able to lead scoring drives when needed but good enough to hold a lead if given one. That's Teddy Bridgewater too at this point but Bridgewater still has some time to grow and become a real QB instead of just a game manager.
Nothing like a full blown Qb controversy to get the juices flowing. Crazy thing is, its about One Qb instead of two. I though Sanchez had built up a lot of hate towards himself but Geno is on a level by himself. Yesterday I wasn't surprised either way by Geno's play because that's Geno and that's what it is. If the rest of the season is a referendum on Geno, I'm good with that considering I didn't expect more than 8-8 going in anyway no matter who was Qb. I did up the record to 10-6 but after coming back down to earth, its 8-8 again. The upside is that we'll know about Geno by season's end as I don't think Fitz is coming back before it doesn't matter anymore. I think Geno's best option would be to start over somewhere else where they don't know him and he has no history. He may be done here in NY as fans will be prone to just bash Geno for every little thing. Near the end, they didn't want to play Sanchez at home for that very reason. Geno and RG3 have a lot in common when it comes to their relationship with their teams and its fanbase as there's not a lot of love there for either of them. Mac does have his work cut out for him next draft. Unless the 2nd coming of Lawrence Taylor is there when we pick, it has to be BPA Offense.
That type of offense with Geno doesn't score 21 points more than likely. We shouldn't be striving to get this type of QB play. We will have a tired defense and you know Brandon will start complaining. Bridgewater and the Vikings are 5-2, he must be doing something good. While he has modest numbers, he makes the plays needed to win, and he doesn't make the plays to lose them. This all sucks because I was REALLY liking what Fitz bought to the table. Things seem to be falling apart a little bit.
Geno stinks. Really if Fitz is out for a while, bring in Petty or sign someone else. Hell, I'd bring back Matt Flynn before playing Geno.
As long as the Vikings are winning everything will be fine. If Adrian Peterson goes down Teddy Field Goal isn't going to have a lot of fans there.
Forget not getting enough reps, no pre-season and all the other excuses, some valid. You can't teach or practice football intelligence or field awareness. I was one of those people still holding out hope for Geno. Not after yesterday, never again. He just doesn't have it, the IT that makes an NFL QB. The thing you can't measure, test or scout. I can't take another game/week/year of rooting for a Geno lead offense. And Fitz has never completed a full season in his career and is a selfish douche bag for not sliding after picking up the 1st down. I guess Harvard does not teach that??? I took 4-1 and ran with it. We are not ready for prime time, the talent level still requires more work. We have 2 weapons for the passing game and that's it. No TE, no burner, no depth all over. Our defense still does not have a pure pass rusher, one of our CB's is finished, no depth and Safety and we need a punter and Special teams coach. Oh, and one other thing. We need a starting QB
Seriously, that has to be like dumping the ball off in the middle of the field down 7 with no timeouts and 20 seconds left on the clock
maybe on this board, but really? tebow is out of the league and had one miraculous run where he won games in spite of accuracy only slightly superior to a blind man's. And Manziel will be out of the league shortly drafted in the 1st round by a completely dysfunctional franchise.
When will everyone get it about Geno? Seriously? It's not like his limitations haven't been glaringly apparent for two seasons and repeatedly pointed out on this board.
It's one of his biggest problems and it comes back to having no clue how many rushers ate coming after him. If he did I don't think he'd be so apprehensive about drifting out of the pocket That's the biggest problem though. He feels the rush whether it's there or not. He doesn't have a very good internal clock on when the rush is coming. Elgoman I'll respond to your post when I'm home from work. Thank you for your thoughts.
Thanks to J Vilma for the excellent OP and the followup commentary. He detailed all the things that trouble about Geno very well. Much better than alot of the paid analysts you will hear from today.
Wow. Predicting Geno is going to suck is really going out on a limb. You said in your OP that you had previously made this prediction based upon all of that Game Rewind that you have special access to that you shared with us in several threads last season. So why is it necessary to start another Geno Sucks thread when we have literally dozens of them already? What keen insight have you shared with us that we might not have known? What hard hitting analysis have you offered? As best I can tell, you just came to tell me that Geno sucks ... AGAIN, and that you called it after watching him play last season. Whoopdeefricken doo! Congratulations - You just made a shitty sports day even worse!
He made throws that fitzpatrick simply can not make. Those are our two options. I wasnt here but i have a strong feeling the same ones who say GS is the WORST qb in the league is the same group who thought Sanchez was the absolute WORST. lol And the ones who were adamant that Shotty was the absolute worst OC.....(taking the crown from Hackett) are two minutes from anointing Gailey the WORST OC in the league. The neuroses is almost more entertaining than the game. Lol Sent from my SM-G386T1 using Tapatalk
In some ways the two sides of the fans' views of Smith remind me of political discussions, when I see people taking certain positions and am mystified how they got there, what it took for them to ignore or not know about and not care. It seems Smith Fans just don't understand why it's such a problem how he took those two sacks. They look at his pass completions and ignore that the Raiders entered the game with the worst pass defense in the league, and Smith was successful only after the Raiders ran up a two plus score lead and were giving up those plays. Anyway the OP here has neatly summarized the only rational POV about Smith, and as far as I am concerned there's really nothing more to discuss with Smith Fans. All that's left is wondering exactly how it is that they can look at the world and so completely miss what is going on.
