He shouldn't see a single snap this season unless he's handing the ball off or taking the knee at the end of a blowout. A lot of people want to say in-game experience is the best but things as simple as reading fronts can be worked on in practice without shattering a guy's confidence if he isn't picking it up right away.

A nugget of wisdom here. An encouraging word there. A piece of advice for Bryce Petty from someone who has been through it. Petty has endured the roller coaster nearly every rookie quarterback experiences in the NFL. He has struggled with offensive line protections, reading disguised defenses and even which brand of pizza to order (and Tweet about). But the Jets' 24-year-old backup has been given a guiding hand from a mentor who knows something about being an embattled quarterback — his former Baylor teammate and Washington Redskins backup, Robert Griffin III. "He provides a lot of insight, and it definitely helped me out with the draft process and what to expect and then minicamp and into the preseason," Petty said Friday at his locker, just 48 hours before his first NFL game, the Jets' season opener with the Cleveland Browns at MetLife Stadium. Petty needs all the wisdom he can acquire, finding himself just one hit from becoming the team's starting quarterback. It's a dream come true and an occasionally "overwhelming" thought for the native Texan. The education of Bryce Petty has not necessarily been smooth. The Jets figured it would not be, drafting the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Petty in the fourth round knowing he was a project who needed time to develop. He ran a spread offense at Baylor, which does not translate well to the NFL. He never had played under center. And he would need to make multiple reads and cope with exotic pass rushes he had never seen. But then a former teammate broke Geno Smith's jaw in training camp. Then the Jets released veteran backups Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson. That left only one thing standing between Petty and the starting job: Ryan Fitzpatrick's 32-year-old body, including the surgically rebuilt left leg he broke in December. Just as recently as late August, Jets coach Todd Bowles said it would be "wrong" to expect Petty to be the team's backup quarterback. "I left an envelope with a lot of money in Coach Bowles' office," Petty deadpanned Friday, "so I guess he got it." But he soon turned serious. He admits there were looks he recognized in film sessions and practice that he missed in preseason games. Even small missteps such as ordering a Domino's pizza and tweeting about it can blow up into a social media shaming frenzy in New York. Griffin knew Petty would face obstacles — the self-doubt, the plays that seem so clear in practice but look like puzzles in games. The "nuances of being an NFL quarterback," as Petty put it, separate starters from backups and quarterbacks with jobs from the unemployed. So Griffin made sure to remind Petty that he belongs in the NFL — and "that you can stay here," Petty said. "During camp, I was getting so … not necessarily down on myself, but upset about things because I was struggling," he said. "[RGIII] told me, 'Just be yourself.' You want to make sure that you know, 'I am good. They drafted me. They want me here.' "He told me that when I took over for him at Baylor and then here. That meant a lot." But the next time Petty (27-of-45 for 260 yards and a touchdown, but also four sacks in three preseason games) takes the field, it could be for real. Why, I'm excited about Bryce, just not till next year or even the year after that. The Matt Simms infatuation by some here isn't comparable. Bryce Petty will be a good starting QB in the future. I just hope it's further in the future than this year
The team is a playoff contender and full of veterans, Bowles is not going to start a rookie QB unless there is absolute desperation. It wouldn't be fair to Petty, and it's not fair to the team.
Bowles threw the towel in on the first drive. A championship caliber coach would say "we will rally around Geno Smith and we will play good football". Instead we got Sparanoesque runs up the middle when we don't have a center and punting down two scores with 4 minutes left. I thought his clock management was fine at the end of last week's game. This game has me irate. Someone said the defense quit on Geno. Geno came in and put points on the board for a lead despite the show of no confidence in the play calling. The defense saw that and quit on the coach. There's no way the entire defense just went full suck for no reason or because they don't like Geno. We had a fucking lead before they saw the field. Where is the pride?
A good portion of this loss is on Bowels and the playcalling. Geno despite his derpiness played "ok" enough to win today. What was more telling was how the defense turned into garbage after Geno came in. They played with ZERO heart and frankly that's more troubling than anything else that went on. We might have actually been able to win this shitfest if we got even a half hearted effort from this overhyped D.
100% man, we need to let this kid sit this season. Both Geno and Sanchez were thrown on the fire and look how that turned out. This fanbase has got to chill the hell out with wanting to throw every piece of shit we can at the wall. I get wanting to see McElroy and Simms because at the time things were beyond repair so it didn't hurt. Putting Petty out there now would be a mistake. The one thing everybody seems to forget about the Tom Brady story that gets trotted out at times like this is that in Brady's rookie season he threw 3 passes and played in 1 game.
The real problem is people like you that still think that this team can win with Geno Smith under center. We need to explore our other options now before we are forced to blow a high draft pick on a QB later.
It's actually pretty crazy how these things happen. I enjoyed it when it happened to the Broncos but I hate it here. Remember in the Super Bowl when they lost the snap on the first drive? And everything just came crashing down from there? It's happened three games in a row now, we've lost the last two. First drive Redskins game, Decker fumble. First drive Patriots game, Fitz fumble. Raiders game first drive, Fitz injury. Like we were cursed or something. It's still hard for me to believe the Raiders could be a better team than us. Hopefully we never see this kind of sorry play again and Bowles can right the ship.
This defense have been frauds all year and it had nothing to do with smith coming in. I have been saying it all year and I don't care what the stats say, when it's important to get a stop they can't stop a nosebleed and Revis and Cromartie are old and slow and NOBODY is afraid of either of them anymore...and how much fucking money have we wasted on them, especially Revis? Enough to cripple our cap for three years at least.
Its all business for Mevi$. Always was and will be. I think his play has been OK this season but Cro is better at producing kids than playing football. Yes the Defense sucks and I am sorry but you gotta throw in the CS as well unless THEY redeem themselves. We have a smart GM and lots of young players that are good. Decker, Skrine and Marshall (up till this game ) a # of others have played well in my opinion. It took a brain trust to revamp this organization so lets see how we do going forward
Cromartie is one and done because of his contract. Revis on the other hand is eating up a big chunk for those 3 seasons like you said. It's going to take that long to get from under his guaranteed money.
