If you're correct and 2016 will be a strong draft for OL and LB, then the Jets will have a couple of good opportunities to find a pass rushing OLB, Harris' or Davis' replacement at ILB, Brick's eventual replacement, an upgrade at RT over Giacomini, or upgrading the RG spot. In addition, they should be able to improve depth at some of those positions. The only QB I'd have any interest in at all at this point would be the Lynch kid from Memphis and that would solely be based on what I've read here. I haven't seen him play yet. I've only seen Goff play once, but was totally unimpressed. I hope I get the chance to see him play some more. I'm really hoping for Petty to prove to be a steal at this point.
Yeah, Jets need help on that right side. I would love for the Jets to find another good tackle that can move to the left side in a few years, but in the mean-time play on the right side. RG needs upgrading as well. On defense, Mac and Bowles need to fix the line-backing corps. Myles Jack is the name everyone is talking about, he's one of the more versatile players coming to the NFL next year. Someone that can cover a running back and at times the TE position. Lynch, I saw him play the other day, dude is 6'7, and a quick release - but I also need to see more of this guy for sure.
Watching Oregon vs Michigan State now; one thing I'll say about Connor Cook, when he's on, he's on. Good progressions, good touch, good accuracy. If only he wasn't so inconsistent, because he sucks when he gets out of rhythm. He'd be an interesting round 2 pick to see if we can't coach him up to be at his best all the time.
No one in college football makes more big boy throws then Connor Cook. 3rd down, and against the blitz he is great. Too bad, the inconsistencies could be his downfall. He's going in the first round along with Goff and at this stage, Lynch could have a Blake Bortles like stock increase.
IMO any QB who tries to consistently throw the ball flat footed doesn't have the intelligence to make it in the NFL. I don't care if the coaches at MSU haven't tried to work with him on that. If he's watched any other games (collegiate or NFL), and learned anything at all about playing QB, he should know that is a moronic thing to do as it negatively affects accuracy and velocity. I want the Jets to have no part of him.
That can be coached up and fixed. Rodgers makes these types of throws at the next level. Sure it's a negative, but hes demonstrated the ability to make any throw. Its def an issue, and at the end of the day - I wouldn't take him with the first 20 picks, of course depending whose available OTC. In a QB class, where there isn't an elite prospect, I would take him over the majority of the QBs in this draft, if I wanted to upgrade the position. The inconsistencies are a killer. Check 2:20, not many QBs make those throws at the collegiate level. While Cook has many inconsistencies, when he's blitzed, he makes some great throws. When I evaluate QBs, I try and look at what they do best - and if I am a coach and I see a good combination of skill-sets and there's a flaw that can be fixed - you might have a gem at the QB position.
Good day for Hack, probably picked up his draft stock a little bit showing teams he's still got the ability he had his freshman year. Obviously he didn't just magically lose it, but it's nice to get the tape out there. Time for Goff vs USC. Should be fun.
Rodgers makes throws from every angle and position, but that's Rodgers. As far as I know, Cook is not a Rodgers clone. Rodgers also steps into throws when he needs to. Cook isn't inconsistent. He never uses solid fundamentals in terms of his feet. He ALWAYS throws flat-footed. I'd be very surprised if he changed in the NFL. It can be coached, but players have to want to change and then put in the work to do it. By this point, Cook should know how important correct fundamentals are and if he's a serious student of the game and his position and wants to improve and be drafted high, if he was willing to change, he should have made the change on his own between last season and this season. It's not rocket science. I respect your opinion, but sorry, I just can't get on board regarding Cook. I might take a flyer on him in the 3rd or 4th round, but wouldn't touch him in the first two rounds. If the Jets scouts have spoken with him or his coaches and learn that Cook realizes that's a flaw, knows he needs to change, and is willing to, then that would change things somewhat. I do know that often times, college coaches won't mess with things like that because they're afraid it will confuse or mess up the QB, and since he's the best option they have, they need him to play without thinking about fundamentals, so they don't work with him on it. If that's the case, then that absolves him from some blame/responsibility, but the bottom line is it's HIS career, his success or lack thereof in the NFL. It has to be a concern that he has never addressed this.
Thanks for posting this. Hated by his teammates? Sense of entitlement? No thanks. According to many, that's some of the same problems Geno has, usually don't indicate that a player is coachable, and aren't the qualities one seeks in one's QB.
I never called Cook, Rodgers - but I am just exhibiting the fact that QBs throw the ball flat footed at the next level. If you saw Rodgers in Cal and he was doing the same type of throws, by your analysis - you would remove him from your draft board as well, or draft him in the 3rd or 4th. I'm aware of his inconsistencies, that's why each time I make a post on the guy, I make note of that so everyone is aware. I don't think he's perfect by any means, but against the blitz, and when it comes to the ability to put the ball where only the receiver can it get, I don't think any QB prospect right now does it better than Cook. I would easily take him at the middle / end of the first and no doubt in the 2nd round. All QBs have flaws, but it's up to the QB and the coaching staff to fix those flaws. This class is weak no doubt, no superstars - but I think there are 3 that I like in this draft.
I did notice this as well, and that bothers me a little bit as well. BUT: To me this is all that matters. As long as he holds his play, teammates accountable - if he's a guy that's to himself that's OK. Major editing done there heh.
NFL teams have Goff as QB3? Oh please let him fall into the 20s. We'd get a steal on the level the Vikings got for Teddy.
He's going to fall, no doubt. Going to get the Bridgewater treatment, along with the Mariota treatment.
I'm still not a huge fan of Cook, but I can live with him now. He's improved against pressure this season and is an aggresive QB. He's probably too aggresive at times and while I like the fact that he tests one on one coverage outside, he probably depends on his WRS too often to win at the catch point. Regardless, He's growing one me. Haven't seen much of Lynch, but his upside is definitely higher than Goff's or Cook's. Too many are loking for the next Aaron Rodgers, instead of the next solid QB(which is is all, you need). I still like Goff very much and would take him anywhere from 15 to 32, but you're starting to see some of his flaws. Still a talented QB with good accuracy, just not great .
I know you didn't, but my point is that just because a few superbly talented QBs are able to do things doesn't mean that others can. I know that you are aware of his issues and inconsistencies. I could be totally wrong. He just doesn't impress me, and in spite of his results, he just doesn't look like a great QB to me. If Mac and the Jets scouts like him, then no one will root harder for him than me.
