Coples always looks like he's high and on twitter he's always doing cooperate/social events perhaps he has lost motivation to play in NY. Coples should do more cardio and cut down on weight training.
Doug Martin, Alshon Jeffrey, Bobby Wagner, Rueben Randle, Russell Wilson, Nick Folees, T Y Hilton, Lamar Miller, Alfred Morris, etc were all taken after Coples and would have likely helped the team more than he has. That's life though.
playing out of position with limited snaps ain't his fault. Too much Harrison when NE wasn't trying to run the ball.
Gonna watch the game now but I don't recall him taking plays off, he's always just a step too late despite good effort. He's hustling but he's not the fastest guy on the planet. The guy is close to 300 pounds, he's not gonna fly around especially playing LB. He's too slow to be effective in coverage or even as a blitzer. He looked just fine as a DE the past couple years, made tons of plays in the backfield. Since they moved him to full time OLB he's become completely irrelevant.
Now that's painful..Even worst we took Stephen Hill 2 spots ahead of Jeffrey, 4 ahead of Wagner and 32 spots ahead of Russell Wilson. Lavonte David would've looked good in green too. Such a loaded draft to completely miss on. The only good player we drafted was Demario Davis. Thankfully we picked up a great undrafted FA signing in Damon Harrison.
It seems to me like we could leave him at OLB when we line up in the 3-4 like 10 plays a game, and he could spell Snacks in 4-man fronts on third downs so we could make some use of his pass rushing ability.... That or we move Bohannon to TE, and play QC at FB.
If he played better (like he's capable if he really wanted to), I would imagine more snaps he would get.........so yeah, ------- I blame him.
I think Bowles is just going to finesse the Coples situation, using him in the packages that make sense and not worrying about his overall playing time. Right now Harris and Davis are on the field every snap and Bowles is rotating 5 defensive linemen and about 6 defensive backs. That's going to leave a small number of snaps for Coples each game and that's probably what he's going to get. He doesn't fit in the pass packages because there are 5 and 6 DB's on the field when that happens and so it's the rare situation where Coples makes sense.
Yeah and the guy is likely to get suspended for another 4 games this season. If he messes up again it'll be a full year. So I wouldn't be singing his praises just yet
Again, he's not a linebacker. There's a difference between playing out of position and somebody just being bad.
I think that if Quentin Coples showed he could dominate in one phase or another on defense, he would be playing. If he had pure pass rush skills he'd be on the field. If he could set the edge consistently and be a force he'd be in on run downs. He simply isn't good enough to play. Todd Bowles, Kacy Rodgers and Pepper Johnson appear to know what they are doing. If they could fit Coples somewhere, he'd be in there. He is a closer to Vernon Gholston than Dewayne Robertson. Curious to see how much time Dee Milliner sees when he returns. He's right on that line.
Yeah and their defense is great. Do you take a 250 pound tightend that's known as a run blocker and split him out at flanker all game expecting him to catch 6 passes for 85 yards a game? Do you take a speed receiver and split him down to the tightend slot hoping for him to block the end of outside linebacker? Everyone takes this out of position thing and twists it all around into something that doesn't matter. He's a slower interior rusher that's been asked to set the edge and pass rush in space from the outside which is not something he has ever been accustomed to and he's frankly not very good at it other than stopping the run because he's so big. He's been one of many good players that have been pretty good at stopping the run in our box. He's got for a 4-3 3T or a 3-4 defensive end and there's no room for him at either of those spots with better players ahead of him. The coaching staff will move on, we will move on, and everyone can stop crying about him. Just know that he's a solid football player that doesn't deserve the bust label. Is he amazing? No. Is he a superstar? No. Is he a serviceable NFL player? Yes. Think Bryan Thomas in the latter stages of his career. Sheesh.
Coples was meant to play with his hand in the dirt. Doesn't have the speed to play LB and it doesn't matter who's the coach or what scheme you plugging him into. If you wanna look at the biggest problem involving Coples, point to Idzik & Rex. As soon as Sheldon emerged, the Jets should've been looking to ship out Coples ASAP and try to bring back something/anything. Backup WR/TE/RB or day 3 pick would've really helped out with depth. Instead they kept him and tried out a multi-year experiment which left most of us unsatisfied. Now his rookie contract is almost up & there's no trade value left. Keeping him at LB was a bad move for the organization and for Coples career development too. Coples would be looking at a lot more money for his second contract if he showed the league some more productivity as a DL. He's not a bust and doesn't come across as a player who consistently quits when looking at the film. He's just too slow for the job AND he was meant to be on the DL. Better for both parties if Jets & Coples to part ways after this season.
