He didn't. The Jets signed him like a couple of days before free agency. I remember there was an article that described the signing as one of the worst signing this year. They felt the Jets overpaid because they didn't want him to hit free agency and possibly going to the Bills
He hasn't had any bad moments really while still making bigplays for us so he'd be my pick. But anytime you get mentioned in the same sentence as Revis you pretty much become untouchable, there's nothing to really dissect with Harris, he's been splendid so far. There are dozens of other guys you want to get to first.
You're correct actually. I just googled it and he accepted our offer before hitting free agency which started like a few hours later or a day later. My point was just that he would have gotten a lot more money as a free agent. He could have signed the same deal from us while still hitting free agency, but he decided to stick around instead. I remember the Bears, Rex, and the Falcons wanted him bad. So that's at least 4 teams. At least those were the reports.
Initially it might have looked like we overpaid but harria is worth the money. Hes a team leader and the qb of the defense, that can't be overlooked. Ray Lewis wasn't playing his best ball at the end of his career but he was a vocal leader and his work ethic is unmatched. (Not trying to compare Harris to arguably the greatest defensive player of all time). Harris struggles in passing situations but he is still an elite run stuffer and underrated as a blitzer. I was glad that we could make him a Jet for life
the fact that he was about to hit free agency definitely lifted the price it took to keep him here. he may not have actually hit the open market but the jets were essentially competing with the rest of the NFL for his services.
You're quite welcome! I have to admit that as soon as I wrote that reply I immediately had an image in mind of a tiny old lady, in a nightgown and slippers, football tucked under her right arm, left arm held out in a stiff arm. And then she flattens Davis, maybe does one of those Walter Peyton head spears that are illegal today, and then runs it in for a TD. So I don't know if I got the image of your mom right, but I definitely thought that she's gotta be a badass.... Yea, that'd be awesome seeing that just one time in my life..... On a more serious note, I hope she is in a good facility. Those places can be sooooo hit and miss.
The problem is there's maybe 3 or 4 middle linebackers in the league you can trust in zone coverage on passing downs. Kuechly, Navorro Bowman (not sure how he's recovered from his injury), Bobby Wagner, and maybe Lawrence Timmons, maybe Daryl Smith. Derrick Johnson used to fit into that category but has looked pretty bad by my eye this year. Even still these guys aren't man to man aces and generally sit in a deep middle and read and react. Bowman/Timmons/Smith/Johnson are all apart of a 3-4 blitz package half the time anyways. Outside of that most of these guys are run stuffers who can blitz. They still don't cover slot receivers or anything insane like that so stop acting like Harris hasn't been one of if not the best player in our box thus far. He's an elite run stuffer and he almost had a pick last week on the play Cromartie held. He's a good solid player and our run defense would be abysmal if we had Demario Davis as the lead dog. Sometimes you have to overpay when there's no better option. Look at the ILB market this offseason and next offseason. There's nothing but trash out there.
I love how most of us actually acknowledge Harris' importance to this team. Yeah, we had to spend but he totally deserves it, I mean, the guy's average tackles per season in his career is about 130. He's had at least 100 tackles in each and everyone of his seasons except maybe his rookie or sophomore season, I don't recall which one right now, where he was injured and missed game time. Regardless of what you think about ProFootballFocus, they have him ranked as the #1 ILB thus far, as the NUMBER ONE. Seriously, fuck his so called inability at coverage, the rest of his play compensates and actually overshadows this. Stop the bullshit and just be happy we have him as a leader and as a player.
He's been in 3rd downs, so your point is still meaningless. Offenses have had a hard time converting on 3rd down against our defense. Wrong again bud.
Harris is slower but so far in this defense it is not being showcased by opposing offenses. Maybe some credit goes to Bowles. Harris has always been fierce on the field. Never question his effort.
Simple answer NO when he comes off the book(in 1-2 years? could be wrong) he will be on the actual decline and demise of his career. What we are paying for fits
