He may surpass Geno on the depth chart even this year if he starts to show more competence at reading defenses in practice and the film room. It would not be a complete surprise to me if he was inserted into the game late this season if Fitz is injured. I think it more likely that he is the number two quarterback at the start of next season, with Fitz as the starter and with Geno gone. Hopefully it winds up like it did with Pennington's transition (without the injury to Fitz!), that he is totally ready to go when called upon!
13 of the 32 starting qbs were drafted after the first round. Of them, 7 are guys you would actually wanna build a team around. It's not as likely to find a good starter after the first round but it's not that rare.
I just looked it up. Norm Van Brocklin and Sonny Jurgensen are the only two HOF QBs once drafted in the fourth round. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Sort of you; you can't really equate fourth-round picks then with fourth-round picks now, since there were fewer teams in the NFL back then; van Brocklin and Jurgensen were drafted 37th and 43rd overall, respectively (or the middle of round 2 if it were today). By contrast, in 2015 the first pick of round 4 was the 100th overall selection.
However it is important to note that every HC/GM in the NFL passed on Van Brocklin and Jurgensen 3 times before they were taken. You have a good point though.
Very true. Like I said, I just wanted to throw it out there. As we all know, the NFL was a totally different universe back in the 40s and 50s compared to today.
Petty is that kind of guy. He has the confidence and work ethic to know he has work to put in to reach his goal and uses every negative comment as fuel to meet that goal. I think it'll be fun to discover what kind of player he becomes.
What's most likely to happen with Petty is that he gets another full offseason to make an impression on the coaching staff. He won't be in a favored position while that's happening but he's still really under the team's watchful view. If he improves a lot people will notice. The buzz from the coaching staff will go up a bit, although this particular head coach and his staff will never over-promote a player. People will see Petty take more reps in the OTA's and there will be this quiet feeling in the building that something is happening that's good. Then come next summer we'll see if that bears fruit. If he still looks kind of raw this offseason his opportunities are going to dwindle and we'll see the Jets contemplating making moves around the QB position. He could be a developmental prospect for a couple more years but it's very hard to hang around in that slot unless the team is really sure they have something, and the current QB is good enough to keep the team from making moves to fix QB. I think Petty's best shot at being the Jets starting QB is that Fitzpatrick is good enough to hold the job for a couple of years and the team does not feel pressure to try to resolve the QB position before Petty is ready to really go for it. That might happen.
If we lose to the Pats tomorrow the airplane banners and billboards to start Petty should be going up around 2pm on Monday.
Some picture from the pre-draft process. A guy tweeted that Petty would never start and he put it up on the wall at his practice facility for motivation. I used it as a sarcastic answer to the question "when will Petty be ready?"
