People on here don't know whether he's ready or not so stop speculating. You don't sit in on positional team meetings, the 7on7s, the film study, the scout team offense, etc. Nobody knows except for the coaching staff. Will he see the field this year probably not, Fitz has been great, and unless Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, a guy from the patriots, or Matt Ryan comes to the Jets this season no other QB would supplant Ryan Fitzpatrick, as he is playing excitingly average. So when Joe Blow on the Jets forum comes off as knowing when he is ready, that ans 2.50 gets you a subway ticket.
Is it soup yet? The kid's coming out of Art Brilles' one-read spread offense system that he exclusively played out of the shotgun position. While he looked fine in the Cotton Bowl he also looked like a fish out of water working from behind center at the Senior Bowl. Let him get his feet wet--he has so much to learn starting with the myriad of complex defenses (requiring multiple reads) that will be thrown his way on the NFL-level. He doesn't get a whiff of the field in 2015.
And we face a 6th round pick this week. I'm sure the reason he isn't already starting is that he has to learn how to read NFL defenses and act accordingly. It's not that he can't make all the throws because he obviously can.
I don't care when he's ready. We are 4-1 and face New England this week for the division. That should be the only thought going through peoples heads. How to beat them. Not when Petty will be ready. It's like Mets fan worrying if they are going to sign Cespedes or Murphy. WHO CARES! Enjoy the ride fellas!!!!!!
As long as Fitz or dare we say Geno don't lose us games or get injured hopefully we can hold off until year 3.
There is no need for this thread yet. No reason to discuss what no one truly knows yet. Everything could click for Bryce Petty and he comes into 2016's Training Camp ready to start. Nothing could click and he could ride the bench forever and be a back-up/3rd stringer. Fitz could get hurt, Geno could get hurt, then Petty is forced into action in 2015. Who knows? Literally no one. Haha.
Year 2 he becomes number 2 behind Fitz to continue learning. If things are going well he stays there til year 3. If something goes wrong and we are out of playoff contention he takes over late year 2. This is of course the 2 best case/likely scenarios of many.
The other likely scenario is Fitz gets hurt and we see his first couple starts in year 2. But I think it's very likely he's Fitz's backup in 2016.
Footwork too. They're going to be watching his reads and his feet. Is he ever going to be good enough? Who knows? Most 4th round picks hold a clipboard for their entire careers.
It's mind blowing how many people EXPECT him to be the next franchise guy. HOPING he is the guy is fine but expecting a 4th round system QB with a lot to work on is far fetched and destined for disappointment. Let Fitz be the stop gap until he can't anymore and then we'll see where we're at. At this point it's laughable to plan on Petty being the guy next year.
In my mind, he will play when Bowles and our staff think he's ready...... Who knows how long that will be...... He didn't look awful in preseason, but he has a big learning curve......
I don't mind others having an opinion on this one bit, but I think that's more a medium to long term kind of focus issue. Right now the team is doing well with Fitzpatrick. As long as that keeps up there's no need to consider bringing Petty in short term, and if it does keep up this is going to be an off season question. Too many variables at this point, in other words.
I see what you mean but i think most people here are discussing this with the understanding it's best case scenario that he turns into "our guy." Obviously we are looking at this as a Obi Wan Luke type situation excepting that it really just may not work out.
Yep and that's if they are good enough to stick around as a backup. A successful NFL career for Petty would be maintaining a career as a #2 QB strictly based on what round he was drafted in and what system he played in college. A great career is obviously if he were to turn into a starter and a bad career would be if he was out of the league after his first contract. People here should be satisfied if he develops not demanding he's the next franchise QB. 4th Round QB's 2014- Logan Thomas - released after year 1 2014 - Tom Savage - On IR 2014- Ryan Nassib - Backup (TBD) 2014 - Landry Jones - 3rd string 2013- Matt Barkley - traded for a conditional 7th rounder after year 2 2013 - Tyler Wilson - Released during rookie preseason, currently on 3rd different PS 2012 - Kirk Cousins - Roller coaster 2011- None 2010 - Mike Kafka - Released after year 2 2009 - Stephen McGee - Released after year 3 08-06 - None Strictly 4th round QB's listed above not to mention all the failures drafted rounds 1-3. Just need to let it play out and hope that he can consitently improve . But because we're Jet fans we expect him to be the next Tom Brady or Russell Wilson and then come down harder than anyone should when he fails.
