No, that was the point I was trying to make against trading up for a top pick to grab a QB. Consider Ryan Fitzpatrick has us 4-1 and boasts a better career a/ya than some first-round busts and probably over a guy like Alex Smith. How good did Luck look last night? I guess a good hypothetical would be do you take a guy like Connor Cook in the late teens over Myles Jack who could replace Demario Davis and help us defend the uptempo offenses of the modern NFL? We have Fitz/Petty, maybe we're OK for another year. I kind of like a veteran QB with a win-now team that features veterans on both offense and defense. Brick, Mangold, Revis, Cro, etc. Do we have patience to wait for an error-prone rookie? Maybe if we handle him with kid gloves a la Sanchez, but then you're only delaying the inevitable.
Oh yeah, I am not a fan of trading up in the first round. I think if you look in the 20s you take the BPA that's on the board. I think Fitz at best can stop-gap for 1 more year, Jets will have to see if Petty is the man. Having Mo, Sheldon and Snacks didn't stop them from taking Leonard Williams @ 6. Same should be applied to the QB position as well as any other position.
Only two quarterbacks or so in the league are able to overcome their team weaknesses. You're telling me you wouldn't take Matt Ryan first or in the first round of a re draft? A good QB is more valuable than an elite defensive player. The playoffs are a random sample size. I'm not going to crush a QB because of three medicore or bad performances in January. I'm looking for a long term quality starter, not the next Aaron Rodgers.
I didn't see the whole game but again was not impressed with Cook. First play I saw was a simple roll out to his right to a wide open receiver 10 yards down filed and he bounced it to him. Couple of passes later almost through a beautiful pick. Made some nice throws but I'm just not seeing the consistency that I've seen out of some of the QBs I've like the past few years. _
2018 is probably the Year of the QB's. Josh Rosen is a good start, although he's having typical young player problems at this point as true freshman QB's often do when they're 18 years old.
I agree. His consistently throwing flat footed makes me crazy, and he seems to have no feel for pressure. I wouldn't use anything higher than a 4th round pick on him.
IMO it's only a great place to draft guards if you have a SB caliber team with the exception of your OG positions; otherwise, you're overdrafting/reaching for an OG. An OG is not an impact player, and you can still get an impact player in the 20s in a lot of drafts.
James Carpenter has been a difference maker for the Jets, do you consider the Jets a SB caliber team? You know my thing about having decent Gs - I would hate to see this offensive line w/our him. No sacks, and a very small amount of pressures given up. I think James has been an impact player for the Jets this season no doubt in my mind. 3rd best acquisition next to Revis and Marshall. 2016 pool is limited, Goff and Cook will be gone in the top 10 picks more than likely [which to me both you can consider will be overdrafted] . Both make some impressive throws each and every game, but are both are inconsistent with Cook being more inconsistent. They both however make big boy throws each and every game. You can't watch the highlights and expect to make a fair evaluation.
Carpenter has been a very valuable pickup. gotta admit i was wrong on that one, as i didn't see him as a good run blocker, and thought we overpaid. this system suits him tho, and we really really needed that, so i'd agree he has added a lot of impact to our overall O. if we don't take a chance on a QB next draft, OT is still the position i'm most interesting in addressing (provided the value is there when we pick of course)..
I had little to no expectations on the Carpenter as well. This system does seem to suit him more, and if you watch the Seahawks play - they are really hurting without their starting G and C [that was traded for J. Graham]. OT definitely needs a revamp eventually, we have to fix the right side of the line for sure. Been saying, we need to find a RT that can slide over to LT in like 3 or 4 seasons.
I was wrong about Carpenter as well. He wasn't very good last season. .. not sure if playing in a new system has helped his play, but he's been much better this season. We'll be picking around twenty or so this season, I don't think we'll be able to come out of the draft with a great tackle prospect. I'm hoping we can get an off ball linebacker who's flexible enough to drop back in coverage and cover the flats in round 1. With the MOF becoming more important in the NFL, having that guy would make us the best D in the NFL.
The latest CBSSports mock has us taking Alabama LB Reggie Ragland, the only LB. They have Myles Jack in the Top 10.
No, I don't consider the Jets a SB caliber team, but they're getting closer. Carpenter has helped, no doubt. There's no question that you can find excellent OGs in the first round. My point is that you can often find OGs just as good or about as good in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds. Who said anything about highlights? I've seen Cook play several complete games or almost complete games over the last 2 years. He has a good arm and pretty good accuracy, but his decision making is questionable, he doesn't feel pressure, and his accuracy and arm are undermined by his throwing flat-footed and not stepping into his throws. There's no excuse for him still doing that at this point in his collegiate career. I think his ceiling is a jag career backup and I don't like him at all.
Lucks probably a bad example to use here, he's playing on a team that's really not very good, their O-line isn't good, they have a marginal running game, and their defense is just atrocious. Fitzpatrick is winning because he's able to ride an elite defense and top end running game, if the team had to depend on Fitzpatrick to carry the team the Jets would be a one or two win team at best right now. Put Luck on this team with the running game and defense and I'd put them equal to or better than the Patriots.
The above is not to knock Fitzy, he's doing what the team needs him to do and that's 100% okay, just using an example.
Just for the record there is no QB I'm in favor of spending a first round pick on unless it's pick 26 or later, at that point a first round pick is about equal to a top of the 2nd round pick so I'd consider maybe, possibly, depending on who was still on the board or if I thought I could trade down to the top o the 2nd and still get him. Really for me the interesting guys have some flaw that are coachable and if they take to the coaching could be really elite QB's in the NFL, but none of them IMHO are worth more than a 2nd or 3rd rounder because of the question marks. (edit, no first rounders that have any chance of being available in the 20's or later which is where I expect the Jets to be drafting in 2016)
