Great performance in the third quarter after a shaky first half. Only one penalty committed. Those are signs of good coaching. Onto New England.
uglier than it had to be, highlighted our weaknesses as much as our strengths, but otherwise went about as expected. Nary did their offense take advantage of our D, we basically had to GIFT them their 20 points on a silver platter. The only opportunities most offenses seem to get against gang green are ones that were given to them by the offense or ST's. We've got a talented offense, an elite D and a leaky ST, and we're 4-1. gotta play next to perfect to beat the pats, that means no errors on punts, that means no fumbles from our WR's, WAS had no answer for us beyond turnover responses, NE WILL.
Great game but have to tighten up on the turnovers, if it weren't the Redskins it's unlikely we walk away with a win after four turnovers.
I'm just surprised we didn't get more pressure on the QB. I thought we'd get about 6 or 8 sacks with Richardson returning to an already stacked front 7. The pass rush was amazingly quiet today. Seems like Rex would have dialed up more pressure on the QB with this group.
6 or 8 sacks is the expectation of an idiot when your team doesn't have a single true speed rusher at the edge.
The Jets just clogged the middle the entire day and there's no way a team with Kirk Cousins at QB is going to beat that. The Jets were beating themselves in the 1st half and then they stomped the Redskins in the 2nd.
Agree. Jets couldn't generate much pressure with the front four. Bowles didn't seem to want to blitz much today. Hopefully he's saving it for next week. Thought our O line played very well today too. Ivory had room to run and Fitzpatrick seemed to have plenty of time to throw.
Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison, Leonard Williams, Demario Davis, David Harris, Quinton Coples.....this team is loaded on the front 7. If you can't harass the QB with a front like that you are doing something wrong. With Snacks clogging the middle, Wilk and Sheldon are free to rush the passer, which they are excellent at, and even Davis and Coples have some pass rush skills. Not to mention blue chip rookie Williams who also can rush the passer. You don't always have to have an elite edge rusher at LB to get plenty of sacks.
Agreed. Was a bit disappointed. Definitely expected more sacks and pressure on Cousins. Maybe Bowles was saving everything for next week.
The Jets get as many sacks as you can get with a front 7 that is full of elite players and outside rushers that are non existent. The rules of the game favor passers so much now that one or two receivers will be open past 5 yards before 3-4 ends can get penetration most times. It's a reality that anyone with a passing grasp of the game understands.
Can't disagree with this. It's why I can't blame some people for being mad that we didn't draft Vic Beasley instead of Leonard Williams.
I understand your point, but I think you are underestimating what a stacked D-line can do. It causes a ripple effect through the entire front 7. It's a matter of more studs than the opposing o-line can block. We can overwhelm them with numbers (or should be once this group hits its stride). I saw Westhoff diagramming this in the offseaon after we drafted Williams. He was showing how we would have more people than the opposition could account for, creating mismatches that should lead to sacks and general mayhem. I guess we'll see how it all plays out in the weeks ahead.
Williams was the best player available on the 6 and it wasn't really close at that point. He was probably the best player available on the 2. The Jets had to take him. Taking anybody else would have been giving up value on the pick and you don't compete with Belichick well when you give up value on your 1st round pick.
Being stacked does not always mean a 6 sack game, it does help to make the opposition one dimensional, the redskins ran for 34 yards. That works to any teams advantage, they also had TE helping to block as well as chipping the jets pass rushers with their RB's. This is not video game football where if your player is rated an overall of 92 he is going to have his way with the opposition. We should be happy that the jets offense is actually putting up points instead of trying to win games by the skin of their teeth.
We basically need a speedier version of Couples. We had Babin, but we need to acquire/draft more situational speed rushers. Easier said than done, but our D-line can both pressure the QB and stop the run. You don't have that kind of versatility if you put 4 pass rushers on the d-line as often times you can just run up the middle.
Best part of this game: Only four penalties accepted the whole game for both teams. Felt so much quicker.
As much as I want speed rushers, I think the coverage in the secondary does a great job masking that. It just doesn't translate into sack numbers.
