I don't hate Geno I just think he has zero football IQ and any snaps he gets will hold back this franchise. I saw him play a lot in college as a huge Big East fan and even in the Big 12, my daughters roommate went to WVU. I saw him live 3 times and he was awful each time, his performance at WVU hi senior year was a mirage based off of shovel passes to Austin and Bailey and he beat up on sisters of the poor. His outstanding last 4 games of 2013 (lol) kept that POS Idzik from drafting a real QB in 2014 and set the franchise back at least 3 years. That game in Yankee Stadium was just one of many reasons why I wanted nothing to do wi him--I didn't warn ANYQ QB in 2013 considering 2014 was the year of the QB. Decker will dig up some old posts where I wasn't as down on him but yeah, never wanted to draft him and I don't want to push the franchise further behind putting time into a WB with low football IQ. So sue me. _
These clips show Geno throwing into triple coverage (Steelers), locking into his first reads and getting picked (multiple) all the while missing guys that were wide open down the field. When he did throw deep look at how many times he was picked because he short armed it. If he just threw it a bit deeper he would have had a TD. And people on this board complain about Fitz' 50+ yard COMPLETION to Marshall last week. How people think Geno could progress from absolute garbage to better than Fitz within a year (while recovering from a broken jaw) boggles the mind.
I mean yeah he had a ton of those quick sweep passes but he also threw a ton downfield in college......He put up amazing stats in college and yeah definitely some of it was inflated But I guess you just happened to see his 3 awful games live because there couldn't have been that many more.....Think he had like 40 something TDs and 5 or 6 INTs either his Jr or Sr year Well I guess we're just on opposite ends of the spectrum......I think he has some great physical tools and can improve on the intricacies and other parts of being a good QB. He'll never be amazing in that department but with great coaching and hard work I don't think it's that crazy to make the jump to a decent player I understand if people don't ever think he can improve so I guess we'll find out one day
That's the difference between me and a Geno fan. I don't want "decent". I aspire to much more. I want exceptional. I want great. I want elite. I don't think Geno, with all his awesome "physical skills" has the football IQ to ever be great. I don't want to waste time and effort and snaps trying to get to decent. Unfortunately the 3 QBs I wanted over the past 2 years, Idzik fucked up on two of them and two useless wins cost us the other one. I'm going all in on Petty because along with better physical skills than Geno he has a much higher football IQ and has more leadership qualities. _ _
And it took a lot for me to come back around to him. I saw him play some great games last year, it looked like he was basically handing off the ball 18 and 2o an 25 and 40 yards downfield. Effortless passes, accurate, lightning quick release, total command of his offense (for what it was). And then he he shit the bed against lol WVU and I was put off. But he played really well the rest of the way and far outplayed Cook in the bowl game, one of the best performances I saw last year from a QB and after Marcus I was all in. When we traded up and selected him I literally screamed out because it has been so long since we picked the exact player I wanted (again, after Marcus) in a draft. I think he's a smarter version of Brett Favre--not that he's ever going to be Favre but I see a gunslinging leader with great physicality. _
If we continue to play Fitz the entire season than this year will just be a complete waste. This team is definitely not going anywhere with Fitz as QB, and Fitz is definitely not a long term solution. Starting Geno could be a complete waste and it may not be, but you really do not know unless he plays. Personally, from what he has shown I feel there is about a 50% chance that Geno can be a passable NFL QB and that is enough to warrant figuring out what we have. Fact - Geno improved in just about every category from rookie year to year 2, and quite considerably (Higher completion %, Less Ints. More TDs, Better TD/INT ratio, higher QBR, higher passer rating, less sacks and yardage lost) Fact - in only 3 games all last season did he have more Ints than TDs Fact - Last year, he only had 2 truly awful games (not 12 like posters here would lead you to believe) Fact - Last year he had 3 games over 80% completed passes and another 3 over 60% Fact - 6 games last year over 87 passer rating, 7 over 80 passer rating People see the Buffalo disaster last year and want to close the book (even though the receivers bear some of the responsibility on 2 of the 3 INTS) That 1 game to them was so bad, that they are blinded to the fact that the rest of the body of work last season showed improvement albeit not real good, was still nowhere near as awful as they claim. They will then say that it does not matter what the stats say, they can see with their eyes that Geno sucks, but then want to use the very same stat based argument for Fitz even though the eye test simply tells the story that Fitz blows, he has just been a little luckier as he could easily have 5 or 6 more INTs right now.
^^Cracked me up. I'm with you. I think the kid has great potential (God, I hate that word) and I think the coaching staff and GM believe that too.
It's not a wasted year if we make the playoffs. Fitzpatrick gives us a better chance at that end result than Geno does. I want a Super Bowl as much as anybody but I'm not interested in watching bad football again on the offensive side of the ball. Fitzpatrick this year and then go find the QB we really need. If Geno winds up on the field hopefully he's made a big leap in his play and we get the playoffs anyway. For everybody out there who is stuck on we have to have a QB this year who might suddenly become great, even if that seems unlikely at the moment, when was the last time you saw a great QB show up at the same time as a great defense? It just doesn't happen. Resources are finite and the part we have this year is the great defense. It's not worth rolling the dice at QB on a 10% shot unless we have no other choice. Fitzpatrick is good enough to win with this defense and this ground game. If either of those things go away then sure put Geno in but we're not wining anything this year in that scenario anyway.
I totally get all of this and your reasoning makes perfect sense.... The main part some disagree with though is that you think Geno's projected play would be a big downgrade to Fitzpatrick. All things considered I just don't see it that way, even if Geno doesn't make a big jump. But whatever it's Fitz until he fails Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I also was very happy...he was my QB for this past draft all along if we weren't able to get Mariota I'm just so damn sick of these Jet QB debates that Petty just needs to be the guy for the health and well being of all Jets fans Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Seattle recently. And Wilson was making virtually no money while giving them very good QB play. That's why the team became so dominant. We are actually similarly built to Seattle if you consider our strong secondary and look at Ivory as a Lynch substitute. Where we differ greatly from Seattle is at QB. They have a playmaker, we don't. I agree though with your general premise, that it is rare for a great QB to be with a great D. I think the best bet for that this season is probably still Denver if Peyton can get his act together a little more. The Broncos D is legitimately an excellent unit. If Peyton can get near to his level of play from the past few years, they might be the favorites to win it all.
That's probably part of it. But ALL of them??? Maybe they are all employed by Smith's agent. Time to make that contract push! Sounds like a bad strategy to me, but maybe some feel otherwise.
Maybe some of these Smith Fans weren't around or are suffering from memory loss how that transition went from the end of 13 into the 14 regular season. The key variable is that when the pressure was on, when the games counted, Smith flat out sucked. Some Smith Fans may wonder why I and others who share my view like you on this are not inclined to give him "another chance". That's because he's had more than enough chances than a mid second round Qb should get,and he's only done well when it doesn't count. We've been there before. Please, not again.
Geno Smith's not an NFL QB - let's get that out of the way. Some Smith fans may wonder why many others are not inclined to give him another chance. Answer: he's Geno Smith. ...awesome, hahahaha!....
To be fair, I wouldn't go that far. I think Geno is clearly an NFL QB, I just don't think he's a starting caliber QB or a guy that can be built around to lead the Jets deep into the playoffs. He has some talent just not the football IQ. He can stick around for 10 years in the NFL--a lot worse guys have done it. And he could become a decent stop gap. Just not this year, not for this team and not someone I'm going to try to build around. _
