"Fitzpatrick has, on occasion in is career, shown a tendency to fade late in the season. Of course, it’s not all on him, but for example, after leading the Bills to a 5-2 start in 2011 they lost eight of their last nine. Last season, after he helped Houston to a 3-1 start, the Texans went 3-5 in his last eight starts before he was injured."

something to keep a really close eye on in the coming weeks. I like Fitzpatrick but I hope Bowles doesn't let him lose 5 of 8 before he sits him back down

hardly anything about their roster changed? are you serious. they have just been without their 4-time pro bowl RB that put up MVP type numbers last year and they lost their no.1 WR who happened to be a 7-time pro bowler.. among others.

also, i don't think they look like the worst team in the NFL either

Andre Johnson was mediocre at best last year and they got absolutely slaughtered with Arian Foster on sunday. They also picked up Clowney and Brian Cushing off injury.

Yes but is he at the top of the bottom third? I'll take that at this point

He's not at the bottom of the bottom third, which is where Geno resides at this point. If the Jets had a good QB to start nobody would even be mentioning Geno. He'd just be the backup QB until something happened to the starter.

My guess is that's his future and he'll likely do very well as a journeyman backup QB with the next stop maybe in Philadelphia. Can you imagine Mark Sanchez reaction to having Geno show up to compete as the backup? This following Tebow's appearance this year? The Eagles should be on Hard Knocks the year that happens. It will be pure gold to watch.

dude this argument is a silly one. besides the Jets new GM picked those players in Houston so if they are the worst team in the league I am not encouraged at all, even if I did believe Fitzpatrick is a miracle worker lol

Gailey said he thinks the problems Fitzpatrick has had over the years relate to getting beat down during the season and losing effectiveness in the process. You can see this in the stats, where Fitzgerald usually has a solid 4 or 6 game run at the start of the season and then the wheels begin to fall off.

If that's the case then the Jets pass protection bodes well for us but Fitzpatrick's tendency to take off and then go head first instead of slide does not.

Bowles alluded to that in the press conference. I think Fitz knows he does not have all the tools and wants to show his teammates that he will do anything to get a win.

Agreed. And he seems to have not taken that many hits so far and with the bye-week maybe he will not fall into that same issue of wearing out. Geno might get a few games then.

I don't think that TB has a "win now" directive like Rex. I'm sure that it's at least a one-year grace period. 4 years w/o a playoff game and you can see how you're on a deadline. TB can take all the time he needs to. When it's time to change, TB will make that happen.

I personally don't think thats the problem. He's a typical backup QB... they tend to do well briefly but not over the course of a whole season.

There's no reason a backup QB should do well briefly and then tail off other than the opponent's being able to game plan against him and build up film to more than a spotty record.

Fitzpatrick has been around long enough that he should surprise nobody. If anybody is getting beat by unknown qualities of Ryan Fitzpatrick, well that's on them because he has few if any unknown qualities at this point.

I went back to look at the record to see if I could quantify Gailey's hypothesis that Fitzpatrick gets beat up and then his play declines. I can't find it. Part of the problem is that Fitzpatrick has begun the season injured a couple of times and not played until late September/early October. He did this after signing the big contract with the Bills once so it wasn't a replacing the starter thing. The other part is that Fitzpatrick has had good starts and bad starts and he's had good endings and bad endings. What he hasn't really done is to put together two good half seasons. The Bills defense is at least part of that. Fitzpatrick has never been on a team that was capable of winning the game on defense. That gives him a pretty good shot at avoiding the deep holes that he has trouble shoveling out of due to not having a good arm.

he is an okay QB when the score is even or when his team is leading. but he is a bad QB if his team is behind. Thats not exactly rocket science because that's probably true of most every QB but I think its more strongly pronounced with Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick's teams have traditionally given up a lot of points. Which puts him in the playing from behind category more often than a typical NFL QB.

Fitzpatrick's teams are 33-7-1 in his career when allowing fewer than 20 points. That's not a completely loaded statistic, because most QB's are pretty good in that situation, but it tells you that his potential with the Jets this year is very reasonable. The Jets are going to hold a lot of teams to less than 20 points and Fitzpatrick can easily manage that to a bunch of wins.

Because the question will come up: Geno Smith is 5-5 lifetime when the Jets allow fewer than 20 points.

Whoops, missed a start his rookie year and credited him with a win where he only threw 5 passes and so was less than incidental to the result. 32-8-1.

That's not the argument. The argument is that Fitz keeps throwing into double and triple coverage. He has 6 interceptions through 4 games and could easily have twice that number. A veteran QB not named Marino or Favre should not be throwing into double and triple coverage like Fitz is, especially when he doesn't have the arm strength those guys had. You can't expect the jets to get 5 turnovers each game from each of their opponents. The fact is if the jets get 5 turnovers a game it doesn't matter who their QB is.

There seems to be a perception here that Fitz takes care of the football. A QB who throws 6 interceptions in 4 games is not taking care of the football. He currently has the third most interceptions in the NFL (and he's trailing the leaders by 1 interception - they have 7) and he's been very lucky not to throw a bunch more.

Against good teams (and/or if Ivory is hurt or unavailable) Fitz will cost us games. His three interceptions in Eagles territory in the second half probably cost the us that game. I highly doubt that Geno would throw any more interceptions than Fitz does. Moreover, (i) Geno played very well the last month of last season, (ii) he was outplaying Fitz in training camp and (iii) he has a much better arm and mobility than Fitz does. Gene may not be the answer, but we don't know if we don't play him and at least see what he can do with this offense.

If your goal for this year is a playoff appearance and a playoff loss (a one and done) then Fitz should be your guy because he will not take us far into the playoffs. Good teams, especially ones with strong defenses, will not drop the various opportunities that Fitz gives them.

I'm willing to admit that Geno may not be a good QB - we just don't know unless he gets an opportunity to play. Three of the next four games are against weak teams (the exception being NE). The time to figure out whether Geno should be our QB is now.

I've spoken to this before, but to me the definition of a game manager is someone who balances a lower than average risk of turning it over with an underwhelming ability to carry a team on his back. A Qb otherwise equally talented to a chucker Qb is going to, over time, win more games by not losing them when his team is ahead, but conversely will have more difficulty bringing them back from especially a two score deficit as the game goes on.

All other things being equal. Heh.

If and or when he falters it will become Geno's chance. As a fan I think Geno sucks donkey balls.and yet if he plays I will be rooting 100% for him to win. What is sad is our fans yelling fire when some one lights a clgarette. The season will play itself out and we will see. To let Geno play now is like pinch hitting for a .600 hitter. Just doesn't make sense. And if we are no better than 8-8 I still rather see Fitz for the simple reason Petty will learn more from him than Geno could ever teach him. JMO

You give the impression you did not actually watch the games and only read stat lines. For example the int against the fish should have been called PI. That was on the officials, not Fitzpatrick.

In the Eagles game Marshall clearly short-armed one of them, and I recall one of the other two was a tipped ball.

As far as saying he oculd have had more, the same is true of all Qb's.

You can't just go by the raw numbers.

And most of us have already figured out when Smith should again be the Jets' Qb. Hopefully never.

I'm not going by raw numbers. I'm watching the games and what I see is a QB that keeps throwing into double and triple coverage and isn't throwing the ball to the other receivers that are either open or in single coverage. While many of the interceptions have been on tipped passes, they have occurred because a pass he's throwing into double or triple coverage is tipped and picked off by one of the 2 or 3 defenders covering the receiver he's throwing to (who is usually Marshall). He's also had a bunch of should be interceptions that have been dropped - good defensive teams will not drop those interceptions.

The one thing that kills a team with a good defense is turnovers. A lot of people call Geno a turnover machine but in his most recent play (last month of last season) he was not turning over the ball and he was playing very well. Fitz is a turnover machine and he's proving it by his play this year.

Fitz may get us to the playoffs because of our easy schedule, but he will not take us far into the playoffs.
