I saw Stafford and Wilson do that tonite. Geno's worst game was when the Jets brought in the guy from Seattle and Rex went ga-ga and he tried to force the ball to him. It really doesn't matter what we think. Bowles will have him ready if and when he needs him.
The more fitz plays with this guys the more comfortable he will get. He will start clicking with recievers soon.
So I just got done reading through 7 pages of repetitive crap on both sides of the Geno/Fitz pages. Let me throw in my $.02 here...But, before I do that I want to caveat a couple things here...for those that think Fitzpatrick has any shot in hell of leading us to a Super Bowl then you are smoking wampum. 2nd caveat...I remember the days, not all that long ago, that a QB needed to ride the pine for AT LEAST 3 years before even getting a SHOT to start...so that's on Geno. I really do not get ANY of the posters who are flushing Geno Smith down the drain already. Shit, if you went by that barometer you can throw Terry Bradshaw, Jim Plunkett, Rich Gannon and damn near 80% of every other QB who was any good right out of the HOF, ring of various fames etc...get my point? Now, at the beginning of the season we all were saying that if we had "average" QB play we'd have a winning team and be happy. Well...as human nature will...I've changed my mind! I see a dominant defense and enough fire power on the offensive side of the ball to be in the hunt for a SB...so now, I do not want just average QB play I want above average. I want the brass ring THIS year...after all, isn't that the goal? Having said all of that...before he got his block knocked off everyone...Marshall, Decker...the coaching staff...o-line...everyone said Geno was having his best camp ever. EVERYONE! Media people...fans in the stands tweeting and reporting in...everyone. So, I ask, what makes people think that has changed? I'm going to be straight up honest here...Fitzpatrick pissed me off in the Dolphins game...he wasn't in the same ball park with Devin...Decker had to make an absolute Beckham catch...it's painful to watch him pass sometimes. I don't care about the scrambling because, hands down, Smith smokes him at that as well. I don't want to just "win" games now...we should have blown the Dolphins out...it should have been 40+ points...we absolutely won that game in spite of Fitz...and that is fact. He got VERY lucky on a whole lot of throws. The only game he absolutely looked "good" in was game one. It's been real shaky since then and only the Eagles were able to take advantage when he didn't have 2/3rds of his weapons. Smith is far and away the better talent, has tons more upside and I say you take these next two weeks and prepare him and he starts coming out of the Bye... I'm sorry, I do NOT agree with the posters that say "let's wait until we are losing" to go to Smith....or wait until Fitz is injured...how about let's do something so foreign to this team....and to Jets fans....for a change and do something preemptive!?! How about we do something with a little forethought for a change? Wouldn't it be fantastic if we did something that enabled us to KEEP winning as opposed to waiting until we are .500 or something? From what I've seen, Fitzpatrick does NOT give us the best chance to win based off of what I've seen from a talent stand point. Oh, and one last thing...for those of you who aren't in the "camp" of B. Marshall making a HUGE impact on this offense need to put the pipe down. That's like saying the 49'ers were not impacted by Jerry Rice being on the field. Let's go ask the Chicago Bears if they wouldn't want B. Marsh back. There are exactly TWO teams in league who can just line any old body up at receiver and we do NOT have a QB the caliber of Brady or Rodgers. Brandon Marshall makes ALL the difference in the world to guys like Decker and Ivory. Oh and Decker got nearly one QUARTER of his receiving yards in ONE game last year... Stop with the unabashed Fitz love and the unabashed Geno hate. Fitz is what he is and Geno hasn't even begun to enter what would be considered a fully educated starting QB yet.
Wrong...they are 4 games into the season and the guy is barely throwing balls within arms length of getting caught. At some point he's going to end up getting someone killed by laying them out. That and Devin is utterly USELESS if the ball can't travel more than 40yds in the air...what good is a home run hitter if you can't "hit" the ball far enough...?
After much thought........and going back on NFL Replay and watching the coaches tape, I take this back...Fitz needs to sit. We will absolutely get obliterated by good teams...and I would rather beat the good teams right now...I'm not happy with 8 - 8...I want 11-5 or better...
For better or worse, Bowles isn't going to pull Fitz now, and he probably shouldn't. Despite the fact that I think Geno is an absolute moron (even way moreso after the IK incident), I do believe he has more potential to turn us into a better offense than what Fitz will provide. With Fitz, we'll be limited on offense.
If the Jets put Geno in and then the season goes south the atmosphere around the team and fanbase will be absolutely toxic. It will be round 3 in the young QB fails department and it will probably cause the Jets to spend a lot of value next year bringing somebody like Drew Brees to town. Overpaying for Brees. Round 1 btw is not 2013 it is Mark Sanchez in 2011 and 2012. Round 2 is Geno in 2013 and 2014. Round 3 would be the wheels falling off after a voluntary move back to Geno. I understand the idea that Geno making the jump is the best thing for the Jets. I just don't think he's likely to do that and I don't want to watch crap football for a 4th year in a row if he can't. If we have no choice we have no choice but anybody who thinks we have no choice right now is delusional with a capital D. The schedule coming up in the next 6 or 7 games is weak. Every game there except for the Pats and Bills is manageable with Fitzpatrick at QB. If we're 6-4 at some point and management decides to move to Geno, well that's their call and we'll mostly support it. If we start losing more than that, well Geno will get on the field sooner than that.
So why have Smith on the team then...I say drop his ass and add another talent to the roster. This shit of expecting these QB's to be something special in year one, two, three or even FOUR is ridiculous... Fitzpatrick is going to KILL me of a heart attack if I have to watch a whole lot more of that. <sigh>
Exactly.....It's just the thought of playing the guy with more talent and then taking it from there.....Some also conveniently forget that Geno was looking very good by all accounts this training camp like you mentioned The season will not be lost if you give it a shot and Geno just doesn't seem to get it.....You can go back to Fitz for good.......why is that also lost on some people? Are some people afraid he might actually look better than Fitzpatrick? What's the big deal?
The point of having Geno on the roster is to not throw Petty to the wolves if Fitzpatrick gets hurt or starts losing games for the Jets. That's his value right now. He's a backup QB the Jets could put on the field if they had to and continue to develop Petty off the field. Geno might even make the jump and become a good QB, it's just very long odds against that at this point. If Geno was the #1 overall pick he'd have a lot more opportunity than he does as a 39 pick. We compare him to people like Vinny and Bradshaw and Aikman but really those are ludicrous comparisons. Each of those guys were good enough to get taken #1 overall in the NFL draft and each of them had a GM and head coach desperately hoping their guy would work out because without him they weren't going to get the whole thing rolling and would probably get fired. Geno is more like another Terry drafted by the Steelers the year before Bradshaw. That would be Hanratty, who was drafted in the 2nd round in 1968, performed very poorly that year, performed poorly the year after splitting time with the #1 overall pick and then settled in to his proper role as a decent NFL backup QB. He's more like Tarvaris Jackson, another very gifted athlete drafted in the mid 2nd by Minnesota 8 years ago who performed ok but nothing special in a couple of seasons and wound up moving around the league as a good backup/competition level QB. Geno's not a waste of a pick at all. Generally when you pick somebody after the first few picks of the second round what you're getting is a backup QB who will hopefully fill the role for you for a bunch of years until you find something better, like a real developmental QB to take the slot.
Just a ridiculous over-reaction......Even if Geno plays the rest of the games I don't see how he could be that much worse than Fitz will offer going forward. Even if Geno were to play like he did his rookie season with zero improvement (very unlikely), he still wouldn't lose more than 1 extra game that Fitz would IMO. He had some decent games and good moments with a worse supporting cast all around...it wasn't pick 6 every drop back like some people want to make it out to be Plus why can't we switch right back to Fitz if he is looking that horrible? It's not like we're just going to drag on for games and games IF Geno is as bad as you seem to be worried about him potentially being
Lol Geno can't be "that much worse" than Fitz so that's a legitimate reason to pull Fitz and start Geno. Holy fuck. _
Yeah with a much greater upside...how do you not get that? Fitz is a known 3 of 10 at QB.....Geno might give us 2 of 10 play but there's a decent chance he's better than a 3.....Hence, worth the gamble
If Geno looks like he's looked in most of his starts for the Jets we'll lose a game or two right off the bat when he gets switched in. If he's really improved that won't be the case but that's a big if right now. That's why we can't switch to him if there's a choice involved. If Fitzpatrick leaves us no choice, well that is what it is and we're screwed either way but we've got some potential upside in Geno and maybe we'll get lucky. Making a switch and having it fail would be a huge unforced error that would dominate the Jets outlook for months to come. Just riding the wave right now and seeing if it holds up is the safest thing to do, in the locker room, in the stands and in the media.
I disagree...nothing I've seen has told me Geno Smith is a career backup at this point. Career backups do not toss perfect games...not even by accident. he's on his 2nd system in a 2 year career...working on 3. He gives us a BETTER chance to win than Fitzpatrick AND, at worst, one more game lost if he really stinks up the joint... And...I go back to it...by ALL reported accounts he was kicking ass in camp...and that includes kicking Fitzpatrick's ass. So time to give him back his starting gig. Whatever happened to guys not losing their job to injury? We wouldn't even be having this discussion if Fitz was tossing BB's all over the field...but he's not...he looks absolutely TERRIBLE while winning. That is fact...go watch the tape.
I believe the odds are good that Geno's upside is a mirage. It's possible that it's not but that's just a possibility at this point. Why is Jimmy Clausen not starting in the NFL right now for somebody? He clearly has *some* upside potential. He clearly has a decent arm. The answer is that the NFL didn't think very highly of him at the start and he hasn't shown much since then to change anybody's mind. Same thing with Geno.
