But how can you rate him worse than Teddy Bridgewater, who threw 41 passes for 5 yards a pass attempt, killed three drives with sacks on 3rd down, led two TD drives, one off of a 27 yard field, and generally looked overmatched the whole game, losing a fumble at the end to seal the victory for the Broncos? The answer: you have an agenda as you're watching and rating the games. PFF is way too Jets-focused. They're Jets fans in house and they invest too much in the rating of the team. They have no objectivity. I spent the whole Eagle game screaming at the TV because the Jets were throwing the game away. I even screamed at Fitzpatrick once or twice in the process. Yesterday the game was smooth as silk. There was no point at which I seriously entertained the notion the Jets were going to lose the game and a big part of that was the guy they had at QB. He wasn't great. We haven't seen great out of Fitzpatrick yet and we probably won't. But he did all the things he needed to do to guide the team to a win and that's all I really cared about. Having that turn into a -6.3 out of PFF tells me that they don't know what they're looking at. Either that or they just have no objectivity about the Jets at all. I was more worried about Landry on punt returns than I was about anything else. Our punt coverage team sucks. Our QB is ok. And he was ok yesterday.
Holmes averaged nearly 20 yards a reception in 13. Never said Winslow was the same as earlier, but between him and Cumberland they had better TE's than now with only Davis, and Cumberland hurt (who sucks anyway even worse than before).
It sounds so much like the last round of these "debates" when the Tebow legions were here telling us why he was the "answer".
I would still give Petty a shot if Fitz goes down. In the same two years Geno was turning the ball over 50 times, Petty accounted for 8500 yards and 82 TDs against 10 turnovers. I don't care if it was Baylor either, there are plenty of Baylors but not plenty of QBs who can pitch like that.
There are definitely people who just troll the site and stir up trouble. Combine that with the fans who actually want Geno and you get a potentially toxic mix with the Jets sitting pretty at 3-1 going into the bye. This of course is what the trolls want.
I know you are trying to be the adult here and be fair to the Smith Fans. But I simply get no sense from any of them of how to answer the key questions. Such as how likely it is that he would come back now and overcome enough of his weaknesses to improve the overall Qb play. Instead we see hypercritical remarks about Fitzpatrick, who we all get is far from perfect. But he's getting it done and we have no reason to think Smith would do better. Your mention of the smartness and quickness Fitz shows in getting the ball out and avoiding sacks is a telling one in that regard. Smith Fans do not even acknowledge that he would not be doing as well there if he was in there. They are not being fair and reasonable.
better competition/resume too although of course that's not Petty's fault its still true. Smith played in 2 separate conferences and played non-conference games against Maryland (twice), LSU (twice), Marshall (twice) and he also ripped apart the ACC champion Clemson Tigers 70-33 in the Orange Bowl. Petty played non conference games against the Texas School for the Blind and the Louisiana State House of Nuns... you are right though- Petty did do a lot more prepping for the next level and luckily what your scouting report says means nothing for your long term success and since day 1 of being drafted Petty has approached the position with a lot more professionalism. We were just so happened to be talking about their draft scouting report
maybe yeah, but some of those questions are impossible to answer too. who knows how likel Smith is to come back and be improved. Thats not exactly something you can define definitively without people thinking you are a wish upon a star fool.
And Brady was a sixth round pick who was never expected to start a NFL game in his career. We drafted him and he deserves a shot to show whether he has it or he doesn't. Smith had that shot and we all saw he doesn't.
You are wrong about QBR, it's a blind numerical formula, PFF is "eyes-on" evaluation. What QBR factors, that traditional passer rating does not, is QB sacks, fumbles, rushes, and critically, game situation. I think it also weighs the damage done by the turnover. Converting 3rd downs and leading scoring drives in a close game in the 4th quarter is weighed far more heavily than scoring drives in games with bigger margins. They tried to capture the "clutch" element of QB play. The problem with the formula is that it often weighs too heavily things not entirely in a QB's control. I think QBR loved Fitz this week because of his first downs on running plays, his lack of fumbles and sacks, and his decent passing numbers (that don't have anything overtly negative in them). But it is ALL numbers, there is no human watching then manipulating the inputs. On the contrary, PFF is using the "eyes-on" evaluation and the reviewer determined, like many who watched, that Fitz was mediocre. I disagree that he was the worst, but it was a subpar QB performance. Let's take a look at traditional passing statistics, such as passer rating, which only factor the throws that Fitz makes (and nothing else). Fitz is #29 in the NFL this season in that stat because his YPA is a joke and he has a high number of INTs. Low YPA and high INTs in combination are generally the mark of a terrible QB. You can see that Fitz is rated in this stat in line with such other luminaries as Blake Bortles and Jameis Winston, the difference is he is playing on a much better team than those guys. Basically, passer rating tells us that when Fitz throws the ball this season, he is terrible, bottom 5 in the league. That's what my eyes tell me too. Your eyes are telling you that Fitz plays on a very good team, and is not turning easy wins into losses. I'm not sure you are seeing anything else, but for whatever reason your mind is telling you that you are seeing decent QB play.
Bingo. The quality of the incompletions was glaring too. Very off-target throws. Dangerous throws that could have been picked. Moonshot deep balls that hang forever and don't go very far. This is why the PFF reviewer rated him so low. Aesthetically, it was a lousy throwing performance and one that could have been far worse in terms of turnovers.
This also could be an indication of just how disgusted with Geno the new regime is. They may be convinced that someone with Geno's "worldview" and preparation and performance does not possess the maturity to lead a team to serious heights and never will. They just might not be willing to experiment with stunted potential. They prefer to experiment with known mediocrity.
yes... Geno is absolutely terrible, so lets fire the coach and OC. putting lipstick on a pig never works. the tweak is to remove Geno... and hey what do you know we are 3-1
exactly... i dont care about 2 practices or 2 scrimmages. i care about 2 seasons of real games that counted where geno threw up all over himself.
Fitz doesn't look pretty throwing the football. But for the most part he is moving the team much more consistently than we've come to expect the last several years. Just one man's opinion, but yesterday's game might have looked a lot better if Kerley got Smith's reps. Smith and Fitz are clearly not on the same page.
I am more concerned with Geno's nervous system than I am with his arm strength and leg speed. It is not even that Geno is not smart. I am sure he is. But you don't have to be ultra smart to be a great QB (see Bradshaw, Favre) Geno does not react well under pressure. That has been as clear as a bell. I do not think guys necessarily get over that after displaying it for two years. Maybe they do. Rather not take a chance when my team is good.
