The first quarter of the season is in the books. How would you grade the performance of the season so far for Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey?
B- hasn't won me over with all the dump passes, runs on 2nd and 10 to setup 3rd and 9...however the 3 games with the whole offense out there is definitely improved from last year, also playing with a limited QB
Excellent job Gailey. Finds a way to get the best weapons the football. 3 games Decker played he scored a TD, Brandon Marshall very productive, smart enough to CONTINUE giving the hot hand the football in Chris Ivory to the tune of 29 carries yesterday. I have no issues running draws and short passes on 3rd down especially if your QB doesn't have a super strong arm and you have a really good defense. B+
I would give him an A-, so an A. (grading on a curve as the season moves on) I really dont remember him putting his team in a position to fail at any point so far, the bulk of our offensive issues have been on our players failure to execute what was otherwise a good play call. He seems to know how to feed the beast the right way with Ivory and Marshall and allows them and Fitz to gain momentum when they're hot. thats a huge plus for me after Mornhinweg's insistent over thinking stalled drives as he would abandon a hot hand to soon or try some needless trick play. I trust him to make the most of what he's got in front of him, I'm just waiting to see how he adjusts as the season progresses.
We're 3-1. We are 3-0 in the AFC and 1-0 in the division. Marshall is a top five receiver in the league right now and Ivory is running like a wild man. Has there been issues? Yes of course. But to give him anything less than an A- is ridiculous
I said B. At times, we have been far too conservative with the lead and have backed off when she should have exploited weakness - The Indy game being the most glaring example. That almost came back to bite us in the ass and it will if we don't put teams away.
B. Done well without any TE to speak of but turns into the bastard grandpa of Mornhinweg at times, particularly with a lead.
I'm happy with the 3-1 record, but this offense has been ugly in every game. Fitz is the limiting factor, we have to get him better (not likely), or try the other guy. C+ so far.
Offense & Defense as a whole get A's from me so far. Special Teams gets a C. Our opponents get a D though, so we'll see what happens when the competition rises.
I believe OC is doing a good job. I gave a B instead of an A because of poor clock management late in several of these games. Run the ball, eat the clock, no reason for Fitz to be throwing bombs. Last punt of the game they finally decided Not to punt the ball to Landry!
I gave him an 'A' because of the chicken shit pop warner crap i have had to watch the last 6 years. The improvement looks remarkable from last year. I can actually sit through Jet games now and have a good time watching both sides of the ball, whereas the last 6 years I wanted our offense to punt to watch the defense.
Did the offense hold the defense back, like it did during the past half decade? That's an emphatic NO. Did the offense give the necessary 3 scores in each and every game? No, but they scored more than 3 times in 3 games - that's good enough. If the special team didn't fuck it up early in Eagles game, maybe Jets had a shot there as well. [Thanks, Quigley. You are so fired after this season.] So, score-wise, Jets are squarely at the mid-table. [16th.] Add that to the defense that stops opponents from scoring [1st]. From the way I see it, football is a game of [relative] status. Jets COULD have opted to run up the score, but I don't think that's the approach Bowles takes. [Which I approve, by the way.] And with the exception of Eagles game, Jets were 2+ scores ahead, come 4th quarter, and they didn't opt to score; they opted to burn the clock. I cannot find fault at that strategy there. [Jets COULD have scored more, if they WANTED to. That's the difference.]
I went C. I don't like some of his play calling (throwing when we have the lead and should be running down the clock, throwing on 2nd and short but running on 3rd and long) and I don't know why he seems to think Fitz is capable of throwing the long ball (note: he's not). That being said it could be worse and he isn't working with much. Ultimately I just feel those bad decisions are going to start costing us games once we start playing better teams. It's great to be 3-1 but we've beat the Browns, Phins and a struggling Colts team. Once we start playing real competition they will bury us for our inability to put teams away, leaving points on the board and shoddy playcalling.
C+. is too conservative at times, look how we had to eat up clock in he philly game trying to score. Lam
Again some of you guys comment like you've never watched football in your lives. Even if a QB doesn't have the strongest arm, he has to throw an occasional deep ball to keep the D off balance and keep them from consistently stacking 8 men in the box and sitting on the underneath routes. That's football 101. At the end of games it's great if you can consistently run the ball to run out the clock, but that isn't always possible. Sometimes you have to be more aggressive and throw the ball in order to keep the ball out of the other team's hands. Again, that football 101. As several posters have pointed out, we're 3-1 when no one predicted us to do that well before the season started, and 1-0 in our division. Ivory is one of the top RBs in the league and the offense, with the exception of the Philly game, has been producing. Has it been perfect? No, but NO OC or offense is perfect. Gailey was turning Geno into a decent looking QB, and has gotten solid play out of Fitz and the offense, when Fitz had little time to work with the receivers prior to the season starting. Is he too conservative at times? Probably, but when he knows he has a starting QB with real limitations, and a backup who is rusty from not practicing, who can blame him? The OL has done much better than expected, but still is a bit of a question mark. For the first time in a long time we actually have an offense that can move the ball pretty consistently, is pretty balanced and can score some points, yet some of you are griping about it. Things can always be better or improved upon, but come on. We're getting the best QB play we've gotten in probably 10-15 years, and the most consistent offense since at least Pennington, and maybe Testaverde. The team is winning. We're not turning the ball over. We don't have a RB who's a threat to take the ball the distance any time he touches the ball. Our deep threat WR has played what, 1-2 games and is still raw. Our #2 WR missed a game and the QB had a bad day and we lost to the Eagles. Big deal. Some of you are tripping over yourselves to try to show your football acumen by proclaiming that Gailey and Bowles didn't have the team prepared for the "classic trap game." I say that's utter BS. Fitz had a bad day, and the Eagles were playing for their season. They wanted it more than the Jets. There's no shame in the Jets not wanting it more than the Eagles. The Jets' season wasn't on the line. They didn't expect to go undefeated. They're not SB contenders. I give Gailey an A- Some of you will never be happy. I feel sorry for you.
