I just have to mention again how beautifully this secondary was rebuilt this year. It deserves it. Coming from last year's debacle, where our #1 corner was Dee Miilner and our #2 was off the radar, Calvin Pryor was trying to play FS, Kyle Wilson in the dime .....we now have Revis and Cro (who is playing well despite public opinion and is still thee best 2 out there )...with Milner and Williams, who could start on many teams behind them. Pryor is back in the box, starting to remind us of Victor Green.. maybe better. The much talked about Skrine in the slot and a FS who covers like a corner playing center field. The successful Rex teams had a strong secondary and no line. Then they built a tremendous line and the secondary fell apart. Now we are seeing a defense that, if it stays healthy, has no holes......and its very beautiful.
Its a great mix of balance from the secondary and the dline. And getting our best defensive player from last season back next game is a scary thought to how great this defense can be. I wouldnt say we have no holes though...the LB position is still a concern , especially in coverage. Coples hasnt been great again and Davis has disappointed so far. Still time to get things right there but better teams will be able to exploit that area of the D. Cro has also obviously been vulnerable but Skrine and Williams have made up for that. Least points allowed up to this point as well.
Which includes 7 points from a punt return, and 7 points from Marshall's lateral, although all teams have crap like that....
Harris is playing like a probowler Davis hada great game sunday. Coples is solid. I honestly cant find a flaw on this D. Lol
You means besides our linebackers, right? Harris is one of the best tacklers in the game, but is slow. Davis is fast, but that's about it. Coples is too hot and cold (and his hot is more luke warm) Pace is serviceable but for how long?
Cro just has his Cro moments from time to time it's to be expected. I'm still holding out hope that Milliner can get and stay healthy and be a true shutdown corner that we've seen flashes of. I think under Revis and Bowels tutelage he will grow as a player and learn the finer mental points of how to play the game. He has elite closing speed and athleticism. I thought this would be the year he put it all together, and still could be but yet again injuries have plagued him.
that's why points is not a great indicator of D, as it doesn't isolate the D's performance from the rest of team. ie.. it's a total team stat.. 2 biggest Defensive indicators imo: Opponent Total Yards per game: 269yds - ranks 1st Opponent Red Zone Scoring percentage (TDs only): 33% - ranks 1st other key factors: Takeaways per game: 3.0 - ranks 1st Opponent 3rd down conversion percentage: 31.94% - ranks 3rd Opponent rushing yds per game: 82.6yds - ranks 2nd D is playing great, and i agree with the OP, the revamped secondary has been amazing!
We already are the #1 D. Not every single category (most , but not all). Overall, we are cheering for the NFL's #1 defense. Quick question: If the Jets de-thrown the Pats this weekend in Foxboro, how many of the Power Rankers will put the Jets #1 overall? We're already in the top 5. My guess is of the 10 Power Rankers, at least 5 will put the Jets at the top. Wow.
Don't you think this defense would be better with better LB play? This could arguably be a Super Bowl caliber defense
Oh my goodness. I really hope you're not implying that they haven't been playing as well as you'd like. #1 in points allowed #1 in yards allowed #3 in takeaways Wtf else do you want? Unbelievable.
Well, let's put it this way. 2 teams will make it to the Super Bowl this year. We have the #1 defense in the league right now. Do the math and...?
What power rankings have us in the top 5? ESPN - #8 NFL - #7 Fox - #6 Bleacher Report - #7 CBS - #6 SB Nation - #7 Sports Illustrated is the only one that has us in the top five at #5.
Pryor has been a pleasant turn around. I'm still waiting for him to be the Mack truck slugger he was sold as.
