I could see him backing up next year, but my impression was we had a new front office with a lot of things to get done and not much out there on the market so they wanted an experienced guy to be able to slot in if Geno spit the bit. A right hook took care of the bit.

So to summarize Geno's fanclub ....

Geno should be starting QB because Geno would also (maybe) win these games, by (maybe) larger points margin and (maybe) would look less shaky than Fitz...

    Hmmmm tough decision....

No, we're getting poor QB play with no real hope for much improvement due to physical limitations, it's simple as that

It's possible to win and also have certain players perform poorly....especially when you haven't played a winning team yet

Still comparing a 3rd year player who is developing to and 11 year player who is regressing.

We are 3-1....... Fitz is the starter...... He's going to be as long as we are winning...... Geno's had chance after chance, and he'd be in the middle of ANOTHER chance if he was smart enough to pay IK back...... Geno is getting what he earned...... A spot on the bench.......

I want Geno to play , but I'm not going to come complain on here after every Fitzpatrick mistake for him to be brought in the game. I watch Fitzpatrick play and I can tell it's only a matter of time before he implodes. Even though the team is doing well, the QB play has been ugly. That pass he completed to Marshall to open the game was one of the ugliest passes I have ever seen. I never thought I would see someone with a worse deep ball than Pennington lol

Geno will get his turn. If he doesn't, it will probably mean the team is winning. So either way, it works for me

I like this post....I'm a big proponent of the switch to Geno obviously but I root like hell for Fitz and don't complain after every bad throw or play either, I just look at the whole picture after each game

I'm not going to panic about the situation because I think our coaching staff understands the deal here...As long as the team keeps winning, don't mess with things, I get it

Maybe overall for the franchise it's better off we stick with Fitz for now but with a short leash......I hope Geno is working his ass off in the meantime because we are probably going to need him at some point

The Jets are probably in the best QB situation they've had in ages.

Remember when Mark Sanchez was consistently in the basement stats-wise (I hope you do - he was there for 4 years) and the head coach consistently stated he gave the team "the best chance to win"? And the backup was booger-shoulder Mark Brunnel or inexperienced Greg McElroy? Or kinda/sorta Tim Tebow?

Here we have a guy that is a veteran of the offense, playing decently and winning games. His backup is a two year veteran whose last games as a starter showed improvement and were capped by a perfect passer rating. All that despite playing in front of fanbase that for the most part despised him for not being Mark Sanchez (who played just as bad if not worse).

I say celebrate the wins (3-1!) and be optimistic if Geno gets the call. He may just make that coveted third year leap. If not, big whoop, spend everything during the off season for a franchise QB* and next year it's an insta-Super Bowl.
    ;)

*unless of course the franchise QB is already on the roster.

whether you think Fitzpatrick has been about average, as I do, or more toward mediocre, it is simply inaccurate to say he has been awful. Awful was Smith in 13 and 14. I've seen awful and I hope not to ever see it again.

Smith Fans and their wishful thinking, assuming he will progress just because they want that, are luckily not runing the team.

He hasn't been awful but some of his passes have been starting with that first bomb yesterday that was almost end over end. It should have been a touchdown if thrown properly.

Anyway we are 3-1 and nobody is looking to replace him. Looking at the next 4 games we should be 6-2 and he will still have his job if we are.

I actually agree with this. Good post.

Although I see the change being made at some point......not just yet.
But I think Fitz is so head strong and seasoned.....and humble that he can be replaced...as need be..... AND can then be re-inserted..as need be....and remain professional and consistent.
Geno, on the other hand, is more shaky.

For all the discussion here, the answer really lies in those two individuals. Can geno even come back now, mentally. We dont know.
When i say i'd like to see geno over fitz, In talking about having each at their best. What they actually provide and what the coaches see could be a different story.

We're very fortunate at 3-1 heading into a bye.
And how bout the Giants!! lol

Based on the way he was thrown into the fire with absolutely NO WRs, Smith was far from awful. You need to watch the games again.
He had four game winning drives As a rookie. He completed a ton of passes that fitzpatrick simply cannot make or even attempt.
He ABSOLUTELy ahowed enough to be given the starting job at the beginning of the year and we wouldnt be having this discussion if not for the IK thing. (Does that show he can not lead this team? We don't know.)

clyde gates, reuland stephen hill... Omar Epps.....something like that. Who can perform as a rookie throwing to that trash.

Then of course there was last years miami game. Decker caught 10 for 220 from somebody.

If Geno performed like fitz has so far we would swear he was hurt......like Farve at the end of that year.

btw fitz is playing average in the stat line, but real life football and fantasy football are two different things. He has been pretty bad....at times embarrassing.

Yeah, fortunate that miami was terrible and we got the colts on a terrible day. Throw in the Browns week one and Id say we've been somewhat lucky.

Nice cherry picking. I guess that's all you've got. Still ain't enough.

Fitzpatrick has yet to make any plays as awful as what were common from Smith. Pick sixes. Running backwards. Fumbles. Throwing to defensive linemen.

Smith didn't show anything to become the starter. Fitzpatrick was coming off a broken leg. There was no competition. Then Smith showed douchey non-leadership behavior in the IK incident, and lost his job deservedly so.

In 13 Smith had a lot more than Hill and Gates. He had Kerley having a very good season. Holmes did play 11 games. Cumberland is the TE now, and he was then, in fact played with K Winslow, who was decent. In 14 they added Decker and later Harvin. It is simply misleading to focus as if Hill was the only receiver Smith played with. But Smith's interceptions were all on him, anyway.

I hope he never gets another snap for the Jets.

Cant believe this is still going on.

I just dont understand the rationale that Geno should be starting right now. I'd consider myself a Geno defender to a point, but Fitzpatrick hasnt done anything to lose his spot yet. The team is 3-1, and Fitzpatrick has put up numbers so far that Geno hasnt ever done.

Stick with what is working, and if Fitzpatrick implodes than bench him.
