And that is a very fair, well-argued point. Just don't label our founders as racist, sexist homophones who had no idea what the country would evolve into.
Again, you are looking for an all encompassing solution. I am just trying to make things better with minimal conflict.
Yes, true. And since there's no standard definition of being mentally healthy this is something that government could easily politicize. Ohhh look at these <insert political group here>, obviously mentally unstable.
I'm not sure...a student on campus posted on Twitter what was happening and then she was bombarded by media clowns for information. They didn't actually CARE that she was there and could have been killed, they only wanted the scoop so they could further their career.
I am not looking for an all encompassing solution. I know there isn't one that's even possible. You are the one who asked "how could there be any issue?" so I answered it, with real issues. I don't think your solution would make things better although thats a legitimate debate I acknowledge but I KNOW it wouldn't come with "minimal conflict" - you seriously think systematically categorizing individuals based on their mental stability and likelihood to commit crime will create "minimal conflict"?
Society isn't the only issue but I think it's wrong to write it off completely. Obviously mental health is a big issue. Generally speaking, our society as a whole has a pretty fucked up moral compass right now. There have always been mental health issues and guns in this country. There haven't always been regular school shootings.
The common denominator is the media and its motivations. I took a journalism class once and our professor would always tell us, if I call on you and you don't know the answer, just say 'money', because more than half the time you'll probably be right. The media feasts on this stuff, and it fuels these deranged guys at home on their computers. In their demented minds it is the only way for them to be known in the world. It's right in front of them. The news networks are their vehicle for their skewed beliefs.
These shootings will never cease not because of gun laws, but because television ratings are at stake.
that's not true NSN. school shootings and regular shootings themselves have occurred with frequency since the creation of the gun. there's an argument to be made that singular events are happening less, actually. The difference is that back in the day you could only shoot so many people with your single load musket. or your 12 gauge shotgun. or your colt revolver. Now these same fuckheads can get their hands on way advanced technology, multi-output guns and buy their ammo online and stock up. They are just more effective at killing because the tools are better. Also, the internet/TV makes you hear about it more. not more shootings though
We have the right to free speech but there are some limitations like you can't go into a crowded theater and yell "fire", you can't make threats against the president, yada yada. Why not make it a law that you cannot report the name or show photos of people who shoot up schools?
School shootings have certainly occurred at a much higher rate in this country since columbine. I don't think you can make an argument against that. high capacity guns have been around much longer than that.
I think the issue there is that social media makes what the mass media does irrelevant. And kids today aren't tuning in to mass media outlets to get their news. You'd just be cutting off the mass media for arbitrary reasons because smaller outlets and social media is going to put that stuff out there. I'm all for saying fuck the mass media but it wouldn't accomplish the goal. _
point 1) no. I don't think so. Columbine brought more awareness. Think about a school shooting in 1930 for christ's sake. If you were living in NY and some maladjusted kid in rural Ohio grabbed his Dad's shotgun and took it to school and shot his principal before they tackled him while he tried to reload do you think you'd even HEAR about it in NY? Do you think it would even be recorded in the annals of history? today a maladjusted kid takes a gun to his school in Ohio to show his friends and he gets a wikipedia page. and point 2) high capacity guns have certainly been around a long time but they were far less accessible. they were a lot more expensive and harder to find
