I'm not minimizing Maccagnan at all. I think you misunderstood my point and maybe that's on me for not wording it correctly... I'm well aware that you can't just spend money nad win. The two teams you pointed out are perfect examples along with the classic irresponsible spenders, the Redskins. What I'm saying is Mac hasn't really had to evaluate talent yet. Revis is the best in the game, Skrine was known throughout the league as one of the top slot corners around, Cro wasn't even that great of a signing IMO but regardless, he was an established product.

You did point out Carpenter though, who has been great so far. I also am a fan of the Gilchrist signing. So those two low-risk moves have paid dividends for sure.

I'm a diehard Knick fan, I know all about spending unwisely. Although they haven't done that since Isiah left... they were just incapable of making a good trade until Phil came along.

If he can't pay him he should be trying to trade him while we can get the most in return.

I guess it depends a bit on your perspective. I'm 54 now and I kind of want to see the Jets win a Super Bowl before I go. From that perspective I'm grateful that Woody won't let the franchise stay mired for too long. I'm particularly grateful that he hasn't allowed the franchise to just blow chunks for any appreciable amount of time. The Jets have never had back to back seasons under .500 in Woody's ownership.

Think about that for a minute.

Woody finally learned to mind his own business and let the football minds take care of the on the field product. I hope we look back in 10 years and realize, hiring Ron Wolf as a consultant turned this franchise around.

5 of those 8 were already here and he's only had one draft to bring in new young cheap talent. As long as he uses the drafts to eventually replace the aging parts we'll be fine. Also the fact that he hasn't given out any future cap killing contracts gives us flexibility to bring in some new FA blood.

I'll never forget the game against the Ravens when the jets had them in a 3rd and 29 for a first down. Kyle Wilson, who had safety help behind him, held a receiver about 5 yards from the line of scrimmage giving them an automatic first down. Indicative of Wilson's mindset and Rex Ryan's lack of discipline. I respect your opinion but IMO Wilson WAS "absolutely terrible." Kudos to Mac and Co. for losing him.

2005 to 2006: 4-12 miserable to 10-6 playoffs. Where was Ron Wolf there?
2007 to 2009: 4-12 miserable to 9-7, 9-7, AFC Championship Game. Ron Wolf?

None of this happened in a vacuum. I think getting the consultants in to help out this time was a good move but who exactly decided to do that?

    Think about it.

Mac's legacy will come down to 3 things: (1) his ability to draft; (2) his ability to sign our own players and free agents; and (3) the Qb position.

I'm pretty happy with the first so far, but we have yet to see how he deals with his own players (Mo Wilk, et.) I think Mac has a long term vision but I'm not as optimistic as some. That said, I truly think we are a playoff team this year, and for that I am extremely happy.

I think both of those were completely different scenarios. 2005 team was just gutted by injuries but was essentially the team that was minutes from the AFCCG in 2004. As for 2006/7 I actually think the 2007 team was better talent wise than 2006. That was just a weird season. But I don't think either of those periods compare to this. Idzik could have set us back 5 years if we brought the wrong guys in.

But where is the sustained success? It's not there - let's look @ why ...

2008 [2 seasons later] - Behind the Brett Favre trade; let Chad go; 8-8 record - FO / CS is blown up
2012 [3 seasons later] - Traded for Tebow, led to a 6-10 record; Tanny loses his job; eventually so does Rex.

When Woody opens his big mouth and starts tampering with football decisions, it never ends well.

Now, the Revis tampering / signing we will see the future effects but, I think right now we are in a position to experience sustained success, which is something we haven't had in a LONG time. Woody needs to continue to stay out of football decisions and let the experts do their job.

The thing i like most about right now is come the off season players will WANT to play for this regime. Mac knows talent and isn't scared to spend, through in an environment and team players will want to be a part of he can keep this running. Bowles also looks to be a long term solution. It's two games let's not blow our load yet but he really has me thinking he can be a Dungy Tomlin Coughlin decade plus coach of this team.

The Favre trade ALMOST worked and it was definitely the most fun of Manginis 3 years. After we beat the Pats in NE and came back and destroyed the undefeated Titans in Tenn to get to 8-3 I thought we we the best team in the AFC. Of course Favres shoulder had other ideas

Carpenter has quietly been great for us as well. I love Buster Skrine. Guy has some motor and seems to be everywhere.

The first part has been all about the QB. Chad got hurt and that blew up the post-Parcells window.

Favre was part and parcel of Chad getting hurt. He was the blowback on the Chad window closing. The Jets had a mix of vets and youth in 2008 and nobody to reliably QB them because Chad had lost the job the year before. So Favre became available and the Jets pushed really hard to get him and ran out to 8-3 before he got hurt. If Brees or Rivers had been available this off-season we certainly would have done the same thing again in combination with the vet free agent moves. And we'd all have loved the move after the 4-12 disaster last year.

Sanchez looked good for a couple of years (well promising anyway) and then fell apart when the talent declined, as it was going to do given the age of the team the Jets had assembled for the 2008 to 2011 window.

Geno had a shot at being good but he just didn't put it all together and then he got really sloppy, with the missed meeting and the half-hearted effort at Buffalo and finally the fight with IK. It's almost a tragic story but it's the kind of 2nd round QB story that happens all the time as guys think they have a lot of leeway and find out that they actually have almost none at all. It was surprising that the Jets considered Geno option 1 this off-season after bringing in Fitzpatrick. The good game at the end was a teaser but nothing in Geno's two years at QB suggested he was likely to sustain excellence.

So QB difficulties have gotten in the way of sustaining excellence over the last 15 seasons. Not because the Jets didn't try to fix them, with Chad replacing Vinny, Favre filling in for a year and then two early picks taken to try to find the guy, but because the guys they took were cursed, really and truly cursed.

As to the second part, who exactly do you think wanted Revis back so badly? Who stayed out of the draft process (again) and let his guys take the people they wanted?

Who knows what happened with Tebow? The guy has fooled a lot of people into giving him a chance in the NFL. If he fooled Woody, well that wouldn't be the first time somebody bit on him and regretted it down the road. We don't even know that Woody was the guy who got fooled. Rex was big on the Wildcat and Tanny supported what Rex wanted to do and nobody looks like a better Wildcat QB than Tebow. Nobody.

I'd like Woody to retain Casserly and Wolf for annual reviews of the franchise, as well as strategic direction discussions..

im not going overboard on mac.... he came into a really good spot. a team with nowhere to go but up, a top 6 pick in a draft with good top end talent, and 50 million in cap room. he also got to choose his coach and staff

mac didnt inherit a cap mess. he didnt inherit a mid/low draft pick. he didnt have a coach forced on him.

he has brought in alot of talent, but that was nearly a given with the money/picks he had.

ill judge mac in 3 years one the older players he signed to big deals come to roost and he has had a few more drafts under his belt

Alot can change in 2 years. we can find replacements if Mac drafts well. Decker is still young and good for 4 more years, marshall probably has 2 left and we just drafted smith and enunwa and osuwu are young. Geno can't be written off yet and we drafted petty at QB. lineman can play until their mid 30s. we can find replacements for mangold and brick before then. our d-line is young and great. snacks, richardson, wilk, and williams are all 25 or younger. Revis and cro are older, but skrine is young and is a starter on most teams. williams is stepping up, we have milliner and mcdougle recently drafted as well. our safeties are young and locked in for a while. davis is a stud Lber and young, we can find a replacement for harris in the next 4 years. OLB is an issue, coples hasn't panned out and pace has to be in his last year. rielly and mouldin both look good though. in other words, the team has a lot of good young players and we have drafts coming up too. this team is looking to be good for a while and big mac has earned the benefit of having faith.

harris was here but he resigned him to a pretty bloated contract.
brick was here but he also did nothing to draft or find a new LT of the future, who we may need as soon as next season.
