I find it ironic that the same people who are so quick to point out Fitzpartick's weakness in throwing the long ball would have followed Chad Pennington over the highest cliff of the Grand Canyon. I mean, come on!
So Kiko Alonso, Cedric Thornton and likely Mychal Kendricks out for Philly's defense on Sunday. If Fitz plays ok I can just hear it now. _
Will you stop already? I have been consistent that I don't KNOW that it is impossible for Smith to ever get better. I think the odds of that happening aer unlikely. You have yet to make the case that it is LIKELY even, let alone that he WOULD, improve enough if the Jets were stupid enough to make him the starter without Fitzpatrick being injured. The burden of proof is on you. Only problem is you keep trying to pretend it is on Smith's critics.
Fitzpatrick had a QB rating over 100 when throwing 21+ yards in the air last year. http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/8664/year/2014/ryan-fitzpatrick
perhaps the short to mid-range passes aren't there if you don't take a few deep shots. Think of it from a coverage standpoint. DB's can't know that you will not throw it deep. Then they won't fall for fakes. That's why you have to take some shots down the field
Neither one of us know. And I'm not saying that it is likely that he improves. I think he can improve because he has work ethic and physical talent.
That's not the point. Pennington was THE MAN: He was the long-term, planned starting Quarterback. No one at the time could challenge him, even after the cuff injury. Yet, everyone, fans and pundits alike, ignored his extremely short-range arm. Short of taking this team to the Superbowl, there is no way on God's green earth that Fitzpatrick is going to be the starting QB of this team next year. It's not going to happen. He is a (surprisingly good) short-term solution to a major problem on this team. Yet all anyone can do is bitch and moan and cry and complain about his arm-strength when he isn't even going to be here next year. That makes no sense to me.
How is that throwing him under the bus? Unlike others, I am consistent: I supported Pennington and I support Fitzpatrick.
defense doesnt matter with geno. your defense cant make the tackle after you throw a pick that gets taken in for a touchdown. geno is awful, no D matters
Hits the point. http://thejetpress.com/2015/09/22/n...ly&utm_source=FanSided+Daily&utm_medium=email When it comes to the New York Jets, everything is falling right into place. Their off-season acquisitions are doing great from Darrelle Revis to Brandon Marshall as the Jets’ defense looks to be one of the top playing in the NFL today. The Jets’ offense is actually producing touchdowns and capitalizing on the turnovers created by all the great takeaways on defense. Thanks to a new leadership regime and culture, you can clearly see the players are executing, having fun all while really believing in what the Jets are trying to accomplish this season. Now, comes to the big elephant in the room as to what to do when quarterback Geno Smith is ready and able to resume football activities. Head coach Todd Bowles has said that if the Jets are on a winning streak, which they currently are, they won’t make any changes at the most important position on the team and rightfully so. It is in my opinion that Smith is nowhere near the caliber of athlete to be a starting quarterback. He’s too turnover prone, makes erratic decisions and has never been the kind of leader the Jets need to actually field a competitive and respectable team. Don’t get me wrong, I see his potential but after watching him these past few years, I can honestly say he’s probably one of the worst quarterbacks I’ve ever seen as a starter. He doesn’t play with poise and makes some of the most bone-headed passing decisions I’ve ever seen on a football field. He’s just not the kind of leader than comes with the position. As a leader, one needs to know when to step up or in this case, step out when issues arise with confrontations involving other players. The entire summer ordeal between Smith and IK Enemkpali was an embarrassment to himself and the franchise since it never had to escalate to what it got to. Smith, if he was serious about his career and position as a starting quarterback for the Jets, should have used better judgement. Maybe if he did, he wouldn’t have been sidelined with a broken jaw injury because he couldn’t pay a $600 debt to Enemkpali when he said he would have. Everything boils down to respect and how leaders handle themselves and every single obstacle that comes their way. Why didn’t Smith pay him back when he said he would at the beginning of training camp? Why didn’t he walk away when things got really heated? Why couldn’t he handle everything like any other person would have in this situation by taking care of his debt and focusing on football? Needless to say, Smith failed in handling everything and to be quite honest, I’m surprised he wasn’t cut from the team for his involvement in letting it escalate to what it did. As a starting quarterback, you are held to certain expectations and standards both on the field and off it. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is clearly the quarterback the Jets need to win as you can tell he’s handling everything in stride and has everyone on offense clicking on all cylinders. He’s not perfect but one better believe he brings a much better dimension on offense than anything we’ve seen Smith do in his entire tenure with the Jets. Smith has shown bits and pieces of being able to get the job done but the line he crossed by getting himself involved with such a silly altercation over money when it could have easily been avoided is no doubt going to be remembered all season long by those that run the team. I’ll leave you all with one thing that I’m sure most of you saw last night when the Jets beat the Indianapolis Colts. Remember when Smith was shown on camera? Did you notice how he was by himself? He wasn’t near offensive coordinator Chan Gailey or even Bowles. He wasn’t holding a Microsoft Surface tablet or even communicating with his teammates when they fought a great battle against the Colts. To me, it screams that either he is in the doghouse of the Jets or just doesn’t seem to care about things because he’s not under center. Since he has no one to thank but himself for being sidelined, one would think he’d be cheering the team on or at the very least be a part of the play-calling or critiquing the Jets’ offense at the end of drives. Something tells me that Smith’s tenure on the Jets might very well come to an end sooner than many think. If Fitzpatrick can channel that inner magic and continue everything he brings to the table, the Jets would be absolutely insane to make any kind of quarterback change to see if Smith can ever be a starting option again. I honestly believe that he not only won’t be a starter anytime soon this season for the Jets, but his days as a member of the team are numbered. do we need to create 5 turnovers every game? its not like we won 21-20. we beat them by 2 touchdowns. we could have gotten away with a win without 5 turnovers, and thats on the road vs a good QB. if we can hold teams to 20 or less, we can beat them. i can easily see us winning 9-10 games this way. hell thats how we did it the first 2 years under rex, with the D playing so well that the offense didnt need to score a ton. we can score 17-20 ppg and win 9-10 games. as long as we dont turn it over on offense.
By insinuating that there is a double standard because people supported Pennington despite his weak arm but are turning around and trashing Fitz. To make your point you kind of threw a slight jab at Chad.
WOrk ethic and physical talent are not all it takes. The larger point is you consistently criticize Smith skeptics because they don't KNOW for a certainty that he cannot succeed. But this is not a question of having absolute knowledge or not. It is as a practical matter a question of likelihood, what the odds are, given the issues that he has. And not only that, but that such assessment does not proceed in a vacuum. It is one that must also consider alternatives and timing. Timing here means when and whether it is appropriate to put him in there given where the Jets are right now, given how little he has improved over his time to date, and what might be lost if he is put in there and plays worse than Fitzpatrick. You I think tend to elevate the importance of finding out whether a third year player picked in the second round who was generally awful his first two years might, just might, in his third year show significant improvement. For me, given the likelihood htat does not happen, I think your concern and relative assessment of importance are overstated and misplaced. There are quite simply much more important things going on, and the odds are too small that there will be any payoff turning the team over to him.
That's not even close to true. People on this forum were calling the guy "noodle arm" for years. David Garrard even came out one year and said Jax's corners were sitting on his out routes because his passes had no speed behind them. Every year, Chad would come out with some feelgood article about how he was changing his throwing moron and mechanics to get more ball speed, but it never happened. There were plenty of people hoping against hope that Chad would be replaced. People at the stadium actually cheered in early 2007 when he got hurt and Clemens came in.
