Based on what exactly? Certainly not on any games he has played because he hasn't played in any. I know it must be the 82 TDs he produced against 10 INTs in his last two years in college, right?
If he couldn't make the 53 on the Browns who have no one at WR, I don't think he'll make ours either.
I never got the hype with him. He's big but he hasn't shown anything yet. I'd rather have a guy like Duron Carter, I'm not sure if he's on Indy's PS or active roster, but he was available. He's just as big I think and way better as a receiver, plus he's younger. But I guess Pryor saying "The Browns will regret this!!" is enough to make people think he's a stud in the making.
Yes, that and he is our presumptive 2016 starter. Why waste meaningless NFL snaps on the pathetic waste of life Genome Smith, when we can develop Bryce with those snaps.
Petty isn't the presumptive 2016 starter. He's the presumptive 2016 backup. If he shows the Jets some major improvement over what they've seen so far he has a chance to be in the mix in the QB competition in camp. Don't let the hype on him get you just yet. He's a 4th round pick and he looked like he had a long way to go yet in camp. The odds are he can't find the path in the NFL and winds up off the team before his first contract runs out. That's just the reality of being a 4th round pick from a spread option college offense. Those guys are a dime-a-dozen these days.
I'm all over the Bryce Petty "hype". Been on it for two years when i watched every Baylor game since moving to TX from NJ. However, I don't believe its hype. He will be a better player than Winston/ Mariotta. Said that before he came to the Jets.
Vickerson gone. Well, he didn't really arrive technically. So long. Something tells me we'll be adding a pass rusher later today. Babin or Massaquoi maybe.
and yet the Browns might possibly be the dumbest, most poorly run organization in the NFL so I'm not sure If I would care about the decisions they made Pryor is a tremendous athlete. 6'4 240 and runs a 4.3. There's a place for him in this league. He just needs to learn the WR craft. A team like Cleveland who had no one at WR also means they needed help in the short term at the position and wouldn't have been afforded the patience to work in Pryor. An athlete like him is rare. I'd kick the tires on a great athlete like that.
The last really good 4th round QB was Rich Gannon drafted in 1987. He was really good at running an offense put together by Jon Gruden and featuring Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. The odds on Petty are probably 100-1 in terms of being a good NFL QB. Hopefully it happens but I've seen enough good college QB's drafted in the 4th round who weren't good enough to play in the NFL in the end to know that's the likely result.
Totally agree he odds are against him in this day and age where mobile, dual threat qb's are wanted. However, I suspect we will see a trend toward the return of the big pocket passers (Cook, Jones, Shecklenburg). Had Petty come out 5 years ago he would have been a top 10 pick. JMO.
It depends on who is there and where we are in the round. Nobody stands out as a top 10 pick at this point and it's likely that we won't have a top 10 pick anyway. Taking a solid prospect from 11 on wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if we thought that Fitzgerald, Geno and Petty didn't provide us with an answer in 2017 and onwards. On the other hand there are veteran QB's of fairly high quality that might shake loose next year, with Brees and Rivers the most obvious possibilities, and we might try to get one of them if the team falls short this year and QB seems to be what was missing. It's not a good year to draft a QB in 2016 at this point. The pool isn't deep enough and there are no prospects that everybody agrees upon as strong candidates to start in the NFL.
