I was thinking about Babin after the game. He's pretty much done but if he was on this roster, I think he'd be the best or one of the best edge rushers on the roster. Not sure who I'd be willing to cut though. If Cro is done for the season, I'm assuming he would be moved to an unable to perform list and one more spot opens up on the roster. Perhaps that can be Babin's spot? Although I like Mauldin, I'm expecting him to miss multiple games with yesterday's injury. When he's ready, I'd prefer he ease back into the game with just a few snaps.
Anyone thought at times, Pryor was the best player on the field on defense? His coverage skills look to be much improved [almost gave up a big play early in the game, but McCown overthrew his receiver]. That dude was laying the fucking boom on everyone yesterday. Mad props to Pryor.
Kerley shows no vision when returning punts but he does have rock solid hands. I'm thinking he should just grab the punt and run forward with minimal dancing until he's dropped. No fumbles and a consistent 5 yard return. Too bad Cro is done. I really trusted him to return punts in those big moments when the season was on the line.
Bravo! Spot on, and excellent points about Jets fans, this season, and the positives from yesterday's game.
improved YES. better in coverage not so much. i dont think that matters so much, as i think bowles has him in much better positions to do what he does well. play the run, come up and make stops on underneath routes. and id think eventually rush the passer
Good points about Cleveland's OL and the pass rush, Cromartie's injury, and Fitz's play. I think you may be overstating things a bit regarding the OL. I'm very encouraged by the way they played yesterday and in the preseason, but I think it's a little early to say they will be a strength. Let's see how they do vs. Buffalo and Miami. If they do well against those 2 teams, then I'll agree with you. Until then, it's still something that is a concern and bears watching. I also think you're going overboard at this point in saying that Kerley shouldn't be on the team. As someone else said, the season is a marathon, not a sprint. Kerley is veteran depth with reliable hands. If I'm reading his cap numbers correctly on OvertheCap.com, the Jets would only save $1 million on the cap and would incur a $1.6 dead money cap charge, and since the first game is past, I'm not even sure they'd save the $1 million. They possibly would take a $2.6 dead money hit on this year's cap if they traded or released him now. His cap number for next year is $3.1 million and $3.6 million for 2017. If he was cut or traded, I'm not sure if those future amounts would escalate into this season or not. At any rate, he's not going anywhere, so you guys might as well accept that fact. Hate him all you want, but he's not going anywhere this year.
Dude, you're making yourself angry. You're an adult. You have choices. Have you ever considered that just maybe you're wrong about Powell? If Bowles thinks he's good enough to last until around the last cuts and to keep on the PS, he doesn't suck. You're wrong. Accept it and move on.
No he shouldn't. It's still a long season. Injuries happen. Then there's the cap hit and dead money charges the Jets would incur. It's not gonna happen. Deal with it.
He was better than last year in coverage, they picked on him a lot - but didn't give up much success. Definitely improved big time though. Bowles is putting players in position to succeed.
i saw him in involve din coverage 3 or 4 times and 3 or 4 times was not in great position or beat. on most plays, he was playing a robber within 10 yards of the LOS. bowles is smart to limit his plays in coverage. i only counted once he was the single high safety, and few plays where he was deep cover 2
Yeah the first play, he almost gave up a big time reception but McCown overthrew him. I am glad they kept him close the LOS; 10 tackles pretty good. I thought he was targeted maybe 5 or 6 times that first half. They tried picking on him for sure. I heard his name plenty that first half. Still, encouraging news from our guy Pryor.
The OL thing is fair. I guess its too early to call any area of the team a strength at this point. They looked great yesterday, though. I have no clue of the cap on Kerley. If his money isnt moveable, he obviously wont be moved. All I meant was, if he is going to continue to get one snap a game, there is no reason for him to be on the team instead of Powell. He is worse at returning punts, and if he isnt going to factor into the offense, I'd rather have the better PR. If this was just a one off because of scheme, and Kerley is going to actually play going forward, than I have no problem with the staff keeping him. None of this is "hate," by the way. As for the bolded, I dont understand the internet's obsession with "hate." (this is not just directed at you) I see a player who the staff didnt seem entrenched with all preseason, carry over into the regular season. Maybe I'm wrong and he'll be a bigger focal point in the offense going forward (I'd love to be wrong btw). None of this is me hating him, at all. Criticism =/= hate.
Here were the points I saw, pretty much rehash of what everyone else is saying: Good: Running game: The Browns' usually competent defense absolutely could not stop Ivory and Powell. I'd like to see Stacy and Ridley get thrown into the mix. If they perform like this today, they could rival the Seahawks' ground attack; no joke. Fitzpatrick: He wasn't Payton Manning, but no nobody was expecting him to be. Aside from that one INT that Marshall salvaged, he played a pretty mistake-free game. I have a lot of faith in him that he's going to be an improvement over what we've had the past six years. He may not be an elite leader, but he's an effective game manager with enough time on the job to play a clean game. Marshall: That guy was playing like he was trying to make the team! He really is the #1 type of receiver this team has needed. Overall, the passing game was pretty good, but Marshall deserves the game ball for this week. Run defense: The D-line, the one good thing that the Ryan and Tannenbaum/Idzik era gave us showed why they are considered the best in the league. The Browns couldn't do a whole hell of a lot against them. Coaching: The sloppy first half that looked like a continuation of last year turned around VERY nicely in the second half. Very good playcalling overall. Bad: 3rd down defense: The Jets were lucky for those 5 turnovers, because they just could not get off the field on 3rd down. It was like watching Canadian football out there! I don't know if their game play changed on 3rd down situations or what the deal was. Not only did the Browns constantly convert, they did so in highlight reel fashion. Johnny Football may shoot himself in the foot, but Tom Brady and Andrew Luck will not. Give them that much time on the field, they'll destroy the Jets. Pass defense: Yes, Manziel is a running QB, but given how many times they had major pressure on him, they should have had more sacks than they did. The Jets are excellent at stopping the run, but they really lack speed in the front seven. Revis did his thing as expected, but the rest of secondary and linebackers were mediocre at best. Cromartie was ineffective, Pryor was okay, though not 1st round draft pick good. Marcus Williams does look like he has potential though. One of the Jets' glaring weaknesses is something that hasn't been addressed since 2008: Pass rushing linebacker. They tried and failed with Vernon Gholston, and they haven't even attempted to get a major pass rush specialist since. This team really needs a Von Miler/Terrell Suggs/James Harrison (in his heyday) type of guy. They need someone who is too fast to block and can also cover fast, big TEs like Gronkowski. That, IMO, will be the final piece of the puzzle for the defense. Anyway, those are my thoughts for my first post!
Two other observations: Those pants (and the jerseys) were horrendous--what the fuck is wrong with just having one color GREEN and not olive green or drab green or grey green? WTF. And why are we wearing ANY dark colors on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon? Did any of these idiots take science in high school? ALL WHITES on sunny day games in September and October. _
OK, thanks for your response. Sorry I accused you of hating. I assumed and shouldn't have, and now I'm an ass! I just have seen so much negativity and hating this offseason, preseason and now following a good win yesterday, and just got tired of it. Regarding Kerley, I hear you. I don't know what's happened to him, but he isn't the same player he was his rookie season. At this point, he shouldn't be returning punts except for maybe late in a crucial game when you're ahead and you just need a sure-handed returner back there. I'm really surprised that he has disappeared so this year, but he's not that fast and is small of stature and that can be a deadly combination for a team, especially when they have bigger, faster receivers whose hands are just as good, and you have QBs who tend to be wild high. I have a feeling they still might need him at some point this season, but I guess we'll see. He may need to go elsewhere for his own benefit, but I'll be shocked if that happens before next offseason.
i think it makes a lot of sense to bring Babin back.. make sure Mauldin is 100% ok, and hopefully give a spark to our pass rush. at this point, we'd have nothing to lose with Babin, as salary wouldn't be guaranteed. i'd cut Bowen or Simon to get it done.
I know that all too well. The in game thread for yesterday's game was almost unreadable. I didnt get to watch the game live, so I read about it there. What a mistake that was. Snarky sarcastic comments one after the other, barely any actual football being discussed, just complaining. The internet can be a terrible place.
Yep, I tried to read the game thread and couldn't. I think I only got 7-9 pages into it and got so disgusted I had to quit reading it. The local CBS affiliate showed Miami/Redskins, so I couldn't watch either.
