Mariota in his 1st game completed 13 of 16 (81.25%) for 209 yards and 4 TDs, all in the first half of his 1st game. Tampa must have been cringing on the side- line after Winston's pick-six. Winston reminded me of Smith with that great 48% completion rate. I really hope Fitz can keep it together this year and Petty is ready next season. I want to keep our Winston on the bench all season.
He just played against the worst team in the league last year. Get a grip. He looked good and he will probably have a good career but damn. Its week 1.
Fine, YES but if Mariotta keeps playing this way we would be a whole different team with him. Mind you its only ONE game.
I remember a certain WR named Smith tore it up in his first game against the Bills, 10 catches, 300 yards, 7 TDs, only to never catch another pass. Shit happens. Another slant on Mariota's success has to due with Petty. I've been pushing for him to start NOW but have been told over and over a spread QB CAN'T succeed in the NFL day 1. He MUST sit at least a year, preferably 2 to get 'a feel' for things. To me, there is NO substitute for game day experience. Not OTAs. Not mini-camps. Not training camp. Not holding the clip board for 2 years. If Petty is seen as our future, GET HIM OUT THERE NOW.
Was there any evidence the Titans were really going to trade him in the first place? It's not like he was dealt to them, they just kept the pick and were looking for an RG3 deal at 'worst'. You'd be looking at trading Williams PLUS two other firsts plus other stuff.
Only problem with that is Titans fans will give Mariota time and be patient with him. Jet fans and the NY media would never put up with Petty's struggles. There also is a reason, as much as I dont like Mariota, why he was a 1st rounder and Petty wasnt.
They were saying all that about Mariota, even the 'experts'. He HAS to sit at least a year. Maybe they're wrong about 4th round pics too.
Not trading for him? No. The fact that they just had to ruin their chances last year by winning meaningless games. More that, if anything.
Exactly, it is only one game. To get Mariota, we're giving up Leonard Williams, probably Bryce Petty, and whatever else they would have needed to give up to trade up to that spot. I'm not comfortable with that bargain.
I am comfortable with the way things are. If we had passed on him, I would understand this thread. He was way out of reach for where we were as a team, It wouldn't have been worth it when you look at the other things we were trying to accomplish as a team. Next year I think the QB class will be much stronger in the 2016 draft. Let's see how things play out this year first, eh?
