http://mweb.cbssports.com/nfl/write...-to-deal-talks-unlikely-to-continue-in-season If this is true, and La Confora is a Wilkerson mouthpiece so I believe it, the Jets offered Mo a deal just this week worth half of what Marcell Dareus got from Buffalo. If that's he way things are gonna go, we are going to screw up and Mo is going to end up walking. I can see us franchising him once, but doing it again the next year would cost us just as much as a new contract would and we know the Jets clearly don't view him as worthy or that kinda cash. Come on Macc... don't botch this.
I just saw this and was gonna post it. This is the most concerning part: "According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Jets have been unwilling to compensate Wilkerson with the guaranteed money of other recent defensive linemen to sign deals, including what the Saints gave end Cameron Jordan or what the Steelers gave end Cameron Heyward, while several execs from others teams have indicated to me that they view Wilkerson as a far more valuable and impactful player. " As well as the fact that Wilkerson is seeking far below what Watt got. I thought that these negotiations weren't going well because he was getting greedy, not because we were skimping out. We're not even matching the Heyward and Jordan deals? Come on. Hopefully they make some respectable offers after the season or he's absolutely gone after the tag year.
But in defense of the new regime, they don't have any pressing need to get this contract done. Yes, Richardson complicated this by being a jackass, but we have an elite 3-4 DE for $7 million this season, then the opportunity to franchise him next year and renegotiate then.
Wilk needs to have a big year .....If he wants big money he needs to show up every game.He was very inconsistent last season
You nancies are wetting your pants because we aren't printing money for the guy who plays at the one position where we have some decent depth and can exercise some leverage? Put up some billboards.
New coaches, new defensive scheme. You can't blame them for wanting to see how Wilk does in this defense before getting him locked up.
He's under contract for this year, and they could just franchise him after the season if worse comes to worse. Also, I know some people don't want to hear it, but his ceiling is lower than Big Cat, and Sheldon. We only need 2 starting 3-4 DE so it makes it a complicated situation. That being said, I would try to get something done, but wouldn't want to pay more than 12 a year.
It's called negotiating. They will lowball him, he's gonna ask for more than he deserves. You meet somewhere in the middle. He wants Dareus type money, that's about as ridiculous as our lowball offer. So both sides are doing the exact same thing. The difference is that he has zero leverage, so he will have to move a few steps in our direction to get a deal done. He'll be here for 2 more years, for 7 and then maybe 13 mil. per year. That's a pretty good deal, without tying up any money long term on him, and getting the best years out of him, and being able to groom somebody to take over for him. That said, of course we have to get this deal done. He should retire a Jet. He's a great player and an awesome person, he deserves a good long term deal. If he wants Dareus type money he should break off negotiations this year, put together an All Pro season with 15+ sacks and then he'll get the money he's looking for. If he doesn't want to bet on himself he should take less now and move on. A bird in the hand is often worth more than two in the bush.
You do have to wonder why Macc restructured Nick Folk's deal, converting his salary into a signing bonus this year, saving us like 1.5 mil. in cap space. There really is no need to do that unless you're trying to scrape up some bucks to get this Mo deal done.
We already have his replacement, depending if Richardson can stay out of trouble from here on out, plus we also have cunt head Coples, Wilkerson isn't worth the $ that's been thrown out. Jets aren't going to be able to keep all these guys on the DL anyways, maybe Revis can throw some of his big money Mo's way
I hear you, we only have $2.7 million in cap space as of right now. There just isn't enough money to sign him now to a decent deal. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/cap/
I wouldn't mind if he got really mad and put up a double digit sack season in this new 1-gapping system.
I think Mac is playing it smart. Many of our fans have no clue when it comes to contracts, cap management and smart management. They just want to pay everybody top dollar. Well didn't Mac just spend most of a big cap allotment. And this is what happens when you greatly overpay free agents. You might have to cut players including good ones who add to the depth of your team. I don't think that Wilk is worth Dareus kind of money because Dareus isn't. So there's a chance we'll lose him and one of the reasons is because you wanted to sign guys like Revis and Cro who asked for too much money. And that's exactly why Idzik wasn't over spending.
Let's not forget that Mo is about 7M this season and can still be franchised next year. With all the leverage Jets possess at the moment, they can play the wait-and-see game with Wilk (under new coaching staff/scheme) and still resign him to a new contract long before he hits the market.
Of course we could run with Cbs Dimtri Paterson and Darren Walls again if we did the Idzik way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
