You know you're my boy but I gotta disagree here. I've seen him all training camp, his arm is shot. Trust me I was very surprised at how much it's diminished. Dunno what happened Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
I think the "wouldn't you want to look like a genius" thing is way overblown and unless you're a complete narcissist- like a Chip Kelly or a Bellichik--being hailed as a genius doesn't matter to these guys. They care about winning, not style points. If they think they can win with Geno, they'll continue to try to develop him. If they don't, they won't waste their time. If they think they have a better option in Petty, that's who they'll concentrate their efforts on. Geno is not some pet project they'll get extra credit for if he develops into a competent QB. Folks talk about what Gailey has done with Fitz in the past, but does anyone think he's a genius because of that? _
man i hope we don't see Geno. I'm heading to Dallas for our late season matchup there. if Geno is starting, it means our season is probably already over and we'll be getting our asses handed to us in a game i really want the Jets to win.. we also have late season matchups with the Giants, P*ts and Bills.......none of which i want to see Geno under center for.
I get what you are saying, but if a coach could turn Smith into a productive player at this point, I would call him a genius.
If we had the Fitzpatrick from a few years ago, then yeah he would absolutely start the entire season. But the Fitzpatrick version that we have is shot and people will see that soon enough.
Don't get me wrong I'm not saying Fitz is terrible, but you're right he's shot. He's a backup at this point who's starting. There was a reason he wasn't getting first team reps. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Without a doubt. My guess is Geno starts week 4 against the Fins in London after Fitz shits the bed for three straight weeks. They may wait until after the bye for the cupcake Redskins, but we may be 0-4 by then and I guess the games are already not that meaningful by then. I do think we will be 1 and 2 but the win on Sunday against the Browns will be in spite of Fitz not because of him.
Hopefully he doesn't take the field at all this year. Based not on Geno's ability or lack thereof, but if he doesn't take the field that means Fitz stayed healthy and did a great job. I'm not optimistic, I think we'll see him at some point.
I wanted us to draft Geno because I was so frustrated with Mark. Who knew we would draft Sanchez 2.0? I was wrong, Geno blows. Rex fostered this lackadaisical attitude at the most important spot on the team. I am so glad the worshipper of feet is gone.
Geno will start right after the BYE week. The Jets used the opportunity provided by IK's punch to protect Geno from starting the first 4 games, three of which are against very tough teams and the one that isn't (Cleveland) has a very good secondary. Fitz gives them the best chance to win these 4 games because of his experience. The Bye week will give Geno a few weeks to work with the 1s and then 3 of the next 4 games are against bad teams, which is the perfect opportunity to see what Geno can do and give him some confidence and comfort in their new offensive system. The Jets have to see if Geno has what it takes to be their long term starting QB and they can't figure that out unless they play him. The punch allowed them to protect Geno from starting these first 4 games against teams that could be tough for him, especially given his unfamiliarity with the new system. If he played poorly in these first 4 games then the fans would be all over him and it would be more difficult for him to succeed. The surgery didn't appear to be as extensive as was initially thought (as his jaw was not wired shut) and I think he could play earlier if needed. If Fitz gets knocked out and will miss a start expect Geno to come back early.
That depends on where we are after the bye. 1-3 I agree with you. 2-2 maybe. 3-1 no way does Geno play.
Jesus. Big bomb plays are not a good indicator of how good a QB's arm is. Remember Chad Pennington? He could burn defenses with 40+ yard bombs off play action fakes times and again - and that's post-surgery Pennington I am talking about. Sure - it will have some effect in there, but these deep throws are what you call "body" throws. You generate torque down from your foot, then you rotate your body, then deliver the entire energy to the ball. That's not where the arm strength counts. If your QB has a quick delivery, the effect of the weak arm will be that much less. Again - go back to Chad Pennington, and compare him with Brett Favre. Where do you think the stark difference came from? It came from short to intermediate throws with tighter windows. Laveranues Coles on OUT route - does THAT ring a bell, folks? That's the throw Pennington just couldn't make after the surgery. His balls just didn't have the velocity to cover the distance in time. [And YES, Schottenheimer would repeatedly call that play with Chad in the pocket, time and again. Incomplete pass was one of the better results in these situations; in bad cases, it resulted in picks, some a pick 6, i.e. against the Giants. Oh yeah. Absolutely. My disgust for that moron started brewing during the first year.] So the hope is, Fitz doesn't have to throw into the tight windows as often, and Gailey can come up with some good schemes to leave the receivers in space.
Geno can never be as bad as Sanchez because we didn't trade up for him, we didn't use a first round pick, we don't pay him a fraction of what Muck made, and we didn't re-sign him to a huge contract extension.
Unless we're 4-0 and scoring 30 points a game Geno will start after the Bye. The jets absolutely need to figure out what they have and they won't know unless they start him and the best time to start him is after the bye week because he's playing 3 weak teams the following 4 weeks and the 4th team, the patriots will likely have a weak secondary. There will be no safer opportunity to start him and they need to play him this year.
