Has anyone given this some thought that perhaps the Mets fortunes have finally changed for the better?? There was a time not too long ago that those late season trades would have failed and by now, Citi Field would resemble a minor league stadium with the meager crowds and bored announcers. There was no hope. I for one admit that I was on Alderson's ass about not making any moves and honestly, up until the last 50 days or so, his entire tenure as GM was at best marginal. Hard to say why the Mets were so bad. That call 3rd strike against Beltran was in my mind, the beginning of the long dark tunnel that's been the Mets up until recently. Who would have thought that Sandy's fourth choice (Cespedes) would have been his best. Sometimes indeed, its better to be lucky than good... If the Mets can turn the corner, there's hope for the other two woebegone franchises in NYC. I'm talking Jets and Knicks. Well, at least I can wear my Mets gear without the snickers and looks of pity I used to get out here in Philly/Oriole land.
It was obvious that we had the pitching staff to be contenders. But league's worst hitting. And Sandy was again not making any deals and using the minor league system to bring up bats. And it wasn't working. He was putting as many as 4 under .200 hitters in the lineup on many occasions. If he'd of stood pat there is no way the Mets wouldn't be under .500 now and out of the race. But the trades he made for Uribe and Kelly Johnson and then Cespedes changed the entire dynamic both on the field and psychologically with the other players. The first two are very good MLB players and contributors. And Cespedes is a power hitting star who has been hot since coming here. This team right now is a serious contender.
Another thing about the Mets since the deals. A guy like a Cespedes gives players like Wright more pitches. He's a much more effective batter when he has guys in the lineup other teams fear more than him. He's starting to show signs of his previous self. Maybe he'll start earning that big contract.
What just happened? I left the room for a minute and I came back and we scored another run and Mets fans were chanting "Gary Cohen."
Flores single--> pitch runner Young-->Wild pitch-->young goes to 2nd-->Johnson hits a deep fly ball-->runner advances to 3rd--> Plawecki get's the runner in--> people start chanting keith Hernandez.
The two games last night killed me. I don't know how I stayed up for both tbh. But here we are, up 7.5!!! This is truely amazing. The mets are MUST watch tv right now. Every night it's someone different. I cannot wait to see Matz on the bump tonight.
I might be blowing it a little out of proportion, but I have to believe that whoever does get home field in that series will win.
So weird how a few weeks ago people were saying Niese had earned himself a start in the postseason because of his recent good pitching and his longevity as a Met and how el Gordo el Slobbo el Fatso had played himself off the post season roster. Now a few weeks later Niese is persona non grata and Colon has looked like the consummate professional and all around great guy. Gotta say, in a tight spot for a start, I think I want Colon on the mound. _
Well, El Gordo really was sucking but managed to pull his head out of his ample ass and turn it around. Niese otoh has stayed consistently hittable. I think the difference is time in the league. Colon knew what he had to do to turn things around and got it done. Niese I don't think can because I have a feeling he knows his days as a Met are numbered. All he has to do is look at Gee for a peek into his future. In a pressure situation, give me Colon over Niese and honestly, over Harvey too. I'll take the experience everytime and twice on Sundays.
The thing about this current Mets team offensively vs other recent Mets teams including 2 months ago. While some individual players like Murphy might be in slumps they are not susceptible to a team slump as in the past. There are too many good hitters to be dragged into that abyss (we hope).
Yeah just heard a translated interview by Colon before the game and he said he's learned to become a better pitcher than just a thrower pitching heaters all the time. _
