I found it. Practice squad players earn a minimum of $6,600 per week, which totals $112,200 for a 17-week stint. Note that there is no maximum practice squad salary. A team can pay a practice squad player however much they want to entice the player to stay on their practice squad. Practice squad salaries do count against a team's cap space, however.
I looked at Tarkenton when I was doing the post and I think he actually had passable numbers for the era. 1961 was the Vikings first year in existence and they played a rookie QB who was 21 years old and they went 2-8 in his starts and 3-11 overall. the next year Tarkenton was 22 and they went 2-11. Both years they had the worst defense in the NFL. It was really unusual for a team to start a 21 and 22 year old QB in those days. The job generally went to a guy who was a couple of years older even if it was his first real playing time anywhere. So I get what you're saying with the overall record because that's important, however Tarkenton wasn't running an NFL worst offense either year. I think it took the Minnesota management team awhile to get up to speed and I don't think Norm Van Brocklin was a particularly good coach either.
Thanks for the information. This kid I played football with made it to the NFL for training camp and spent about 3/4 a year on a team's practice squad. Thanksgiving that year he shows up at the local bar in a customized escalade and seriously bought everyone in the bar a drink. I remember thinking what an idiot he was as he was throwing around money like he was a huge star making millions when there was probably quite a few people at the bar making more money than him
The Idzik haters and the irrational Jets fans showed their true colors last season after complaining like crazy that he wasn't spending enough of his cap space and we had no impact players on offense when after trading for Percy Harvin some of them bitched that he spent too much money on him. He made a good trade, didn't give up too much and didn't take on a long term contract. And at times Harvin looked very good. I think Idzik wanted to see how it would work out, he was kind of on trial. The complaints were stupid even saying that Idzik did it later in the season out of desperation to save his job. The truth was that Percy wasn't made available until October and because of his ties with Seattle probably was able to get the advantage to make the deal. One guy who was impressed was obviously Rex Ryan the guy Idzik was accused of sabotaging. He signed Percy for the Bills.

He trashed the organization, by throwing Sanchez overboard, (Wasted 5 overall, and 50 mil of woody's money)when common sense said he would play for 4 mil. If you are a GM, and throw away a Playoff winning QB playing for low backup money, and hitch your wagon to Geno Smith..you deserve what you get. FIRED.
First of all the Idzick haters are the rational Jets fans (you have it backwards). Second of all most of us liked the Percy Harvin trade (yes, Idzick actually did something right, you got me, I admit it). We desperately needed a play maker and he was available for almost nothing guaranteed. He had a large contract but cutting him after the season was over would make that go away. With that being said it really was too little too late, the problem should have been addressed before the season started. We had plenty of unused cap space and lots of holes to fill. While Rex Ryan did sign Percy Harvin, we got Brandon Marshall (better received at a lower salary) and Rex got Harvin for less money than we would have had to pay to keep him. Everybody wins.
Brandon Marshall wasn't available last year. Harvin wasn't until Oct. But many on this board ripped him as did Mehta, etc. And said he did it only to keep his job. Possibly that deal was in the works for weeks and didn't go down until the Seahawks had finally made the decision to trade him. After they did trade him players on the Hawks complained about it and the team didn't play well but eventually did. Hating Idzik is a legit opinion but being a hater of his and shooting down everything he did is irrational.
He had to get rid of Sanchez due to incompetency on the field and contract issues. Even most of his staunchest haters haven't complained about that move.He played for 4 with the Eagles but his contract with the Jets wasn't it for 8?

So basically who didn't Idzik sign who was available other than Revis and Cro. He went after Vontae Davis and DRC. Davis got a late offer from the Colts (his team) and accepted it. DRC chose the Giants over the Jets. One reason was because his mentor from Cardinals days, Antrel Rolle was on the Giants.
DRC and Geoff Schwartz came to us. Idzick let both of them leave and the Giants signed them afterwards. Emanuel Sanders did not get an interview. Three or four other quality CBs did not even get an interview with us. Penny wise pound foolish is no way to run an NFL franchise.
He went after the two top CBs available. The one they really wanted was Davis. He signed with his own team. At the same time he was trying to rebuild the secondary thru the draft. Which most of the smarter teams do. You think every player wanted to go to the Jets. As for Sanders Idzik signed the best available FA Wr in Decker. You think Sanders preferred Geno over Peyton.
the top 2 CB's were Revis and Davis. one he didn't bother calling (even though it would've been a complete coup), the other he couldn't manage to beat a 9M per year offer.. obviously another underbid. terrible whiffs.. there were many other good CB's available as FA's last year as well. he settled on Patterson. it was criminal how he managed the position.
