really like the wr corp, seems like a good mix of players that can all play inside or out. very versatile
Rich Cimini @RichCimini 9m9 minutes ago Jets likely had their eye on another WR/KR, but didn't get him, resulting in Owusu return. #nyj
Can't be accurate as I did not see one WR get claimed off waivers - more likely they felt he would pass through while the Oline cut they would have had to make might not - Mac knows his onions!!!
It's always interesting to me how different people see things so differently. As I said, I haven't been able to see any of the preseason action save for some highlights, but unless I'm mistaken, more people disagreed with you than agree regarding Mays vs. Henderson. I don't know who is right, but since Henderson is here and Mays isn't, I'll hope that you're right. I do know one can't have too many good STs players. Just because we have a good STs player in Lattimore doesn't mean that we don't need another. Yes, we have depth, and I'd say good depth, the best we've had in a long, long time, but I'm not convinced it would have been any worse if Mays had made the team instead of Henderson.
Not flaming you personally, but this reeks of bs to me. I get the feeling this was the plan the whole time. My only question is, why not just put Glass on ir yesterday, and not cut Owusu?
That is 1 odd rule. I guess it makes things enticing. Still I would have risked it with somebody else, like Ijalana or Winters.
This is far and away the smartest front office I've ever seen with the Jets. First they needed a backup QB after Geno was injured because Petty isn't ready for prime time, so they bring in Flynn and Johnson and give them a week to get acquinted with the offense. They both perform well in the final preseason game and its unlikely they'll both be signed by anyone so the jets figure if Fitz gets seriously injured in the first game (and Geno's not yet ready) at least one of them will be available to sign and will have familiarity with the offense so there's no reason to burn a roster spot on one of them. Second they have a problem in that they can't put Milliner on IR until the day after they cut down to 53 players so he's temporarily going to burn a roster spot. They like both Powell and Owusu and its pretty much pick'em between them as a returner and a 6th WR. They figure if they release both of them then its very unlikely that they'll both be picked up on waivers (and neither was) so at least one will be available to sign the next day when they put Milliner on IR. Since neither was picked up and they resigned Owusu, I expect that Powell will be on their practice squad. Third regarding their 10 OL. Some teams were widely reputed to be looking for additional offensive lineman (in particular, the Eagles made this well known). They figure if they release one or more of them then the Eagles will simply put in a waiver claim on them (and they probably heard that the Eagles like a couple of them). Now the Eagles (and other interested teams) have a choice, either they can trade with the Jets to get one or two of them or they can claim OL off someone else's waiver wire. I suspect the jets are working a trade of one or two of them for a 5th-7th round pick (or a backup TE) with the Eagles or other potential teams. If they don't make a trade they'll wait a week or so (after the Eagles and other teams looking for OL help have made their pickups) then they'll cut two or three of them and add them to their practice squad figuring its unlikely the Eagles or anyone else will make a claim once they've already made their pickups. Aboushi will get one of their spots when he comes back after Week 1; a backup center will get another spot (I'd expect either Freeman or the center they just cut) and another TE will get the third spot (or they'll cut two and Kellen Davis will be cut for the third TE). My guess is that they heard that some other teams were interested in some of their backup OL and that's why they kept so many of them.
Ijalana? No freaking way. He's the only backup LT we have. LTs don't grow on trees. Unless they wind up signing a center, Winters is the backup RG and C. He would be too valuable to risk as well. I would have hated to lose Owusu, and was shocked that he was cut/waived, but am glad he's back.
Outside of "who the hell is gonna be the back-up center?", this is the best OL depth they have had on the interior arguably since Woody took over as owner. Now I'm basing that on preseason performance but compared to the past when it seemed liked our 2nd/3rd team OL got every single QB killed to the point where any 2nd half completion beyond a 5 yard check down was a miracle; This is a drastic step up. I thought our back-up OL units played superb both in pass pro & run blockingThe depth will be even better once Aboushi returns. I expect Doozier would be odd man out, perhaps eligible for the PS. It stinks that Winters,Aboushi,Doozier, & the never forgotten William Campbell all fell short of being long term answers as starters. But for the time being, the interior is deep for the first time in forever & for cheap entry level contracts.
My opinion of Mays isn't popular and that's fine. He's made a bunch of tackles, but to me he's just an extremely poor version of David Harris. We lack versatility at the line backing position, which is why I didn't really care much for Mays after he got cut. Henderson has pro bowl talent if he returns to form, he's going to be a really good player for us. Mays hasn't shown that in his nfl career. Again that's just my opinion.
i see Henderson as the extremely poor version of Harris. he's slow, old, injured and never had a ton of range or coverage abilities to begin with. essentially he's a big body who can be a thumper if needed. he's not very versatile at all at this stage of his career........unless he somehow has reinvigorated his game tenfold behind closed doors despite the injury. we certainly haven't seen it, so it's a tough leap of faith to accept at this point. Mays i thought did a better job than Davis, and i would consider starting him in that spot should Davis continue to struggle. he was contributing in coverage, forcing fumbles, tackles for loss, while also providing sure tackling and thumping. did everything you could have asked for in vet depth, and i know he can play either position. i just don't know what's up with Henderson at this point, as he hasn't played much at all this preseason.
You are going by preseason snaps which doesn't truly indicate regular season success, never has. With Henderson you have a guy that has a knack for making plays. He's forced fumbles, and generates pressure. I've seen the guy punch footballs out of guys hands, strip footballs, none of our linebackers do that. Mays hasn't done anything in this league and that's why no one picked him up after getting cut. I'm really going by what Henderson did in the past, if he can provide what he did when he made the pro bowl, he's our second best linebacker. When I meant versatility I meant schematics btw. He can play inside and out in the 4-3 and inside in the 3-4. No other linebacker on our team can do that. Prior to that sprain he had a few tackles and a tackle for a loss when he blew up a lineman. I'm rooting for him to return to form.
I actually like both of them, although I have seen Mays play and only know statistics from Henderson and have seen barely anything from him with the Jets. While I like both of them, I don't think either of them will ever be in a Pro Bowl argument. Other than stats with the Vikings, why are you this high on Henderson?
