Escobar isn't going anywhere, the Cowboys have been using a lot of twin TE sets in camp and they use him a lot.
Probably going to pick up a good blocking TE to support our run game, which is our identity. We already have Cumberland as a pass catching TE and pass catching Enunwa taking over as our H-Back for Amaro. What we don't have is a 6th lineman to seal the edge and open up running lanes for Ivory and company.
I'm sure Macc is scouring the other 31 team's practice squads for a young TE hiding in the shadows. Plus Macc has the waiver wire attached directly to his testicles just in case someone tries to slip through at 31m.
I just read that Vernon Davis could possibly be let go because of his salary. I'd jump on that in a NY minute, who cares if he's 31.
If we picked up VD this offense could be very potent. So many huge redzone targets who do you cover??
Oh, heck yes!!! Unless his play has dropped off a cliff and I haven't heard about it, if necessary, depending upon his health and how much longer he wants to play, I'd even give them a conditional 4th or maybe even a 3rd round pick if he's healthy and wants to play for another 3-4 years.
Supposedly he lost weight and is quicker this year. He's certainly worth a look but I don't know why SF would cut him, Carlos Hyde isn't proven by any stretch and the few times I saw him in action last year he looked very average. Bush may wind up being used more as runner than pass catching back if Hyde doesn't pan out. If so they'll need VD to catch what would have gone to Bush.
If this is accurate and I think it is we do still have some money to spend. In fact a lot more than the last time I looked. http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/new-york-jets/
I don't understand why they'd release him either unless he's injured, his play has dropped off a cliff or if he has been a locker room cancern or had continual off field issues. I'm not aware of any of those kinds of things, Mike Singletary's comments notwithstanding.
VD would be an intriguing pick-up. Apparently SF would save nearly 5mm on cap in 2015 and this is his last contract year. From the NYJ perspective, he would be a 1 yr rental at about 4.5MM which is doable and probably what they offered for Mathis. The cost of the trade would be pretty high though as there will be interested parties--It's an exciting prospect.
If the Jets or another team traded for him, couldn't they give him a new contract which would lower the cap hit for this season?
