It looks like to start the season, they will have to keep the 4 QBs. As a result, they can't carry an extra CB and/or WR (a position where there is tons of depth). I can't see them keeping more than 7 WRs even though there's many bubble players that have shown promise. -The final spot was between Quincy Enunwa and DeVier Posey. If it were up to me, I would keep Posey, but the Jets seem to really like Enunwa and have been using him as a no. 3 WR a lot. I think Enunwa sticks. -I think Walt Powell sealed a spot on this roster due to his special teams value. With Jeremy Kerley out, the Jets need an interim Punt Returner. Powell also has experience on kick returns and gives them an option in case Owusu gets hurt again or does not perform well. -Like I said last week, I don't think more than 6 CBs are kept on the roster. The final spot is a battle between Marcus Williams and dexter McDougle. McDougle has played well but not as well as Marcus Williams. You have to understand that the depth here is ridiculous. Their 4th Cb is a 1st rounder in Milliner. I understand McDougle has shown some promise, but due to roster inflexibility, the Jets have to make cuts in some tough places. There's just not enough flexibility to keep an excess of CBs due to the suckerpunch incident. -Things could change at LB next week if Lattimore plays better, but right now I have Trevor Reilly taking the last spot. Reilly has played well and Calvin Pace is injured (although it's not serious). Still, I would think they want insurance for Pace since Mauldin is injured as well. Keeping Reilly takes precedence over keeping Lattimore.
On QBs, they might be comfortable with Bryce Petty being the backup QB and Geno being the emergency 3rd string until he's health enough if he's pretty close. It depends on what Petty does in Game 4 of the Preseason. If Petty's not ready to be a backup QB then I think he goes on IR with a hangnail or some other minor injury. I don't think the jets keep 4 QBs on the roster. On WR, I don't think both Powell and Owusu make the roster (you only need one of them to be a returner and you've got Kerley as a returner also) and I think Posey takes the last WR spot (unlikely they'll carry more than 7 WRs). On TE, they seem to be training Enunwa to be able to play HBack/TE and I think they've also been training Bohanan to be a blocking TE also (they could also use a reserve OL as a blocking TE also). I think they keep either Bohanon or Kellen Davis (or another blocking TE) and possibly they both get cut. On OL, I think Aboushi is suspended for the first game, so they essentially can keep only 8 OL now, but have Aboushi come back after week 1 and cut someone else (maybe Flynn if Geno is healthy enough to be backup QB by then). On ILB, I don't see them only keeping only one reserve ILB (Henderson), especially when they've gone out and gotten some pretty good backups ILBs and Demario Davis is playing so poorly in the preseason so one of the others will also be kept (maybe Mays?) - its possible Babin gets cut for that LB slot or they could keep one more LB. On CBs Darren Walls does not beat out Dexter Mcdougall - CB is a pretty solid position on the team now and the possibility for the future counts more than being the better backup now, but I could see them keeping 7 CBs and keeping both of them. I think the most likely scenarios are (i) Flynn is the backup QB week 1 and after week 1 gets cut and has his roster spot taken by Aboushi or Petty ends up on IR after game 4, (ii) they only keep 2 TEs and 3 Rbs for now (especially if Ridley is expected to be available soon) and both Bohanan and Kellen Davis get cut and the roster spots go to one of the ILBs and maybe the other goes to CB (Walls/McDougall), LB or WR.
for the first time in a long time, i feel like cuts will be seriously difficult and we will cut players that i like
@Jetsruby I really don't think they're gonna cut somebody like Dex to carry another emergency QB around, that would be a big mistake and very, very, short sighted. If one corner has got to go it'll be Walls who has shown nothing so far and who makes around 1.5 mil. in salary this year and no guarantees, too much for a sixth or seventh corner, too easy to cut him. Marcus Williams like I said the past few weeks has been our most effective corner so far outside of Revis and Skrine maybe. He's a lock, he's not going anywhere. Dex is too talented and young, too cheap to not stick around. A lot of other issues I have with your prediction. Dee has to be on PUP if he doesn't contribute by week 1-2. We have too much depth there. Henderson over Mays & Lattimore, don't see it either. Petty has taken another big step this week, he's looked fantastic this preseason and with another decent performance next week I think he'll lock down the backup job until Geno returns. I don't expect him to play this year, I hope he doesn't get to play early in the season, but I don't see us keeping Flynn around just to make sure Petty doesn't play. If Geno is so close to returning by week 1,2,3, you roll the dice. Fitz is about as reliable as it gets, he's not gonna get hurt in those ~2 weeks. That 7th receiver battle is going to be REALLY interesting. Powell? Graham? Posey? Evans? The first cutwave is about to hit us. We're gonna have to cut about 20 players by tuesday. Half of those or more will probably be cut today & tomorrow. I don't expect any surprises there, but tuesday when the final cuts are in (down to 75), there might be a couple guys we didn't expect to get cut. And then we have another 3 days to cut down to 53, that I can't wait for. Bowles & Macc have some really tough decisions to make. Plus, there will be guys we're going to add as well I'd imagine, maybe a veteran backup QB, a backup TE, backup OLB.
I'm surprised Flynn and Josh Johnson didn't get a single snap. Is Flynn even healthy enough to play? I imagine we'll at least see 1 of them Thursday, and Bryce will play over half the game.
Of course Flynn is not healthy and Johnson has had what one day with the team..there are no surprises there. I'm guessing Flynn gets cut this week, Bowles never wanted him to begin with.
I think Powell may have an edge due to special teams, although I think Mac has an affinity for Posey for some reason. As far as RB's go I'm really hoping Stacy sticks , I think the kid's got a ton of potential.
I don't think Dalton Freeman makes the roster this year after the 1st preseason game where he got abused. Sent from my SM-G386T using Tapatalk
Powell has been good on specials, but I think Posey is the better option at WR. Mac must know something, why else would he have made the draft day trade for such an obscure player? _
Predictions on the WR depth chart: Brandon Marshall Eric Decker Devin Smith Quincy Enunwa Jeremy Kerley Walt Powell Devier Posey Me thinks Chris Owusu goes on the practice squad. That concussion was really bad timing for him.
I disagree, I thought it odd last night that he ran the ball once and returned a kick or two, but didn't have any receptions. At any rate, he has looked too good in camp and would never make the PS. Someone would claim him. I think he's pretty much a lock. I think they like Posey, but they will need Powell for STs. If Posey is PS eligible, which I'm not sure he is, I think he goes to the PS.
I don't think there's any way Flynn is on the roster for game 1. That would guarantee his contract for the whole season. Either Josh Johnson will be there for game one or Petty will be the backup, then Flynn (if healthy) will be re-signed. If not, it will be Josh Johnson backing Fitz up. Bank on it. Petty is not going to see the field barring a catastrophe.
He MIGHT get claimed, but Posey is getting cut it appears per Jets news so Owusu will make the roster. I understand he looked good in camp, but he needs to make plays on the field and that along with the concussion makes it a tough assessment. Posey might go on the PS after all. Owusu looked good in practice, but he doesn't appear 100% yet. The more talented receivers the better we are though, Owusu's got talent.
First post updated. Howsare still hanging in there, kind of surprising. That next preseason game will be huge for all these young guys. Evans & Powell fighting for that final spot at WR. Daryl Richardson would have to play really well in order toame it over Stacy at RB. The battle at Guard will be huge. I think Aboushi is pretty much a lock, Winters probably as well. Qvale, Ijalana, Wesley Johnson, Jarvis Harrison, Dozier. And cornerback of course. Will Walls make it? How do we fit Reilly in? I think he's a lock but I can't find any room at OLB. ILB will be huge with Mays, Lattimore, Jones & Henderson fighting for possible 2 spots.
Posey could get claimed, as could some of the others the Jets cut in hopes of adding them to the PS. That's the price a team has to pay once they start building a quality roster with some depth. It's a nice thing to experience for a chance. Usually we're on the outside looking in. As it is, we still need camp cuts to try to fix our TE and possibly RG positions.
