When you put it like that then yeah, fine. He has potential, and I'm not asking for a lot out of him, except that he improves and show progress. And so far he's done that.
2nd round picks don't mean shit. Bryce Petty looks like he could be a stud. He improved more in one week than Geno has in over two years.
It's weird sometimes. Just playing devils advocate for a minute. If we had drafted him in the 1st round, would our perception/opinion of him and his performance change? The way we look at him. Or if this was his 2nd year let's say. If you look around, those other high draft choices aren't playing well. Mariota isn't, Winston isn't. If we're just going by the preseason right now. Zach Mettenberger is being talked up here as a franchise QB, meanwhile you can just go head to head and compare his Falcons performance to Petty's Falcons performance, it was back to back. They are virtually identical. Mettenbeger was 8/11 for 129 yards, 1 TD, 1 Pick with a 104 QB rating. He had a couple of ugly ducks he tossed up there to get picked, both times should have been picks, once he got bailed out and his receiver actually got a lot of yards out of that play. Petty was 12/19 for 168 yards, 1 TD, 0 Picks and a 109 QB rating. He had one ball that probably should have been picked in the endzone. Zach however is a franchise QB waiting to happen but Petty is barely somebody you can trust as the #3 QB. Ryan Mallett is another guy, he looks pretty average at best right now, but he's competing for a starting job. So it's weird. Petty is far from being a finished player, he's just starting out. But so far let's say you didn't see any college tape, the round they were drafted in and so on, if you had to pick one of those guys with your first overall pick, I think out of all those guys a lot of people would probably consider Petty. That's not how it works of course, there's more to it, you can't just judge a QB based on one game or a preseason performance. Just throwing this angle out there. If you're a late round pick it doesn't matter how good you are, the coaching staff will do anything they can to keep you off the field until it's so painfully obvious that they have no other choice but to start you. Being drafted high is like being given a license to play really bad for at least 2 years and the team will still have faith on you as a starter and throw you on the field. A high draft pick can look like garbage 9 out of 10 times and people will make up excuses, and when he makes one play they go "Oh! Look! THAT's why we drafted him! All this potential! The next LT". A low draft choice can look good 9 out of 10 times and people look at the one time the guy got beat and they'll go "See? The guy just can't handle it, you can't trust him. Look how bad he got beat there, he's not good enough". I hate that side of football.
I think you guys have a keeper in Petty. He's smart, looks like a NFL QB and had a pretty good showing.
He is not throwing picks. He appears to have conquered the dread "huddle presence" obstacle. He used his feet to get a first down. Considering he came from the Football Moon as far as pro preparedness goes, I am somewhat encouraged. I like his arm strength, and he has not curled up into a ball yet.
He was also playing with the 2s and 3s so it's hard to hold against him who he was playing against. And that Dolphins number 1 defense had nothing to play for other than to not get injured- they had their suitcases packed and tee times queued up. Wouldn't a better example be his performance against the Dolphins number 1 defense be when they were still trying a few weeks before? _
He'll throw picks. Maybe next week. But it's how he responds that will be instructive. He seems to be able to learn very quickly, he looked so much more comfortable and in command this week over last week. It's tough not to be mildly excited about the kid. Great size, arm, athleticism, accuracy, toughness and by all accounts pretty smart and a leader. _
Petty looked good for what the Jets gave him to work with. He still needs to learn about NFL Defenses, setting up protections at the line, learning the playbook, etc. Winston and Mariota are given all of that on their shoulders right now. Petty has it much easier. Let the kid learn. If he was thrown out with the 1's he might (and likely would) look like a complete mess. There is no need for that right now. I am one of Petty's biggest fans too. I would just rather take our time. Hopefully he is better than Winston, Mariota, Mettenberger, etc in the end.
I wish the Jets would release geno right now. I think he's just negative energy and now that the media has declared open season on him the circus will not stop, and petty will be stuck watching this train wreck all season. For once it would be nice if a young player could just develop and wasn't exposed to this shit.
No but if we're eliminated in November I see no reason he shouldnt get some time at the end of this year
