Assuming Devon Smith doesn't make the roster? Eric Decker had the same 40 yard time as Kerley coming out of college and Decker is a large man. Kerley has never been quick haah multiple edits but Brandon Marshall was faster than Kerley out of college and hes huge
There's a difference. Kerley has the ability to change direction quickly for the yards after the catch. Devin Smith is your vertical threat that can stretch the defense down the field vertically. Imagine Kerley on crossing routes with Devin Smith going vertical. They are very different receivers.
I understand theyre different players but Smith is quicker all over the field. His cuts are quicker too, I watched him all through college because im a Buckeye fan. Smiths 20 yard time is quicker than kerleys was. Kerley isn't really quick in any aspect....not sure what youre seeing on the field. Yes kerley can be dangerous with defenses having to cover marshall, decker and then Smith over the top but that's not a reflection on Kerley, I don't think.
Marshall Decker Smith Kerley and Owusu (KR) will and should be our 5 wrs on the 53 man roster. Top to bottom that is a scary receiving corps.
20 yard time during the combine doesn't really tell the full story. Kerley has really good lateral quickness. A quick 5 yard out-route can be turned into a big gain with Kerley. He has exceptional foot speed I guess you could say. Think of it as "short area quickness". Everything I saw with Devin Smith was him going vertical. I think Marshall, Decker, Kerley and Devin Smith all have different skill-sets on the field. Kerley is a slot receiver, his production is maximized with the weapons on the outside.
I understand your point but cant really think of too many times where JK made a 5 yard catch and turned it into something big.....im sure hes done it a couple times but he doesn't stick out as that kind of player. to me anyway....but on a whole, im excited about the POTENTIAL of our WRs
JK is the quickest receiver on the roster; no question about it. He doesn't have great top end speed but but can cut and get up and go fast. Devin Smith has world class top end speed; very different receivers. I still think Jeremy has lots of value on this team the way we are constructed. He is solely a #3 slot guy who will run short zig's, slants, bubbles, and hitches. He's not going to blow the top off the defense or beat anybody up the seam. He also has very sure hands and runs crisp routs. The contract he got was a little inflated and makes him a Jet this year. It's nice to see some other guys push him for snaps and I hope this motivates JK; he has a firey side to him. He is our Welker and also has the ability to throw the ball from his days as a QB.
Kerley is a proven receiver for the jets. Todd Bowles has not proven he can be a good head coach. I don't like him already.
I'm of the "will-be-shocked" camp if we move Kerley. He's our best PR and there's no evidence he has fallen out of the top 6 WR's on the roster.
You keep him. Regardless. He is dependable. Depth is the biggest thing. We've seen what it is the past few years to be short handed at WR. It really hurt this team, amongst other things, but that was a real burden too. Smith is already hurt, Osuwa has a concussion history. It's not smart to ship out Kerley right now till you can replenish the position with more of TB/Mac type receivers that they preferr for this team.
he might be our best until we see what some of these young guys can do but he sucks as a PR.....absolutely sucks. some of you guys are wayyyy too high on Kerley
It excites me that kerley could be the floor of our wr talent. Being that he was the ceiling not too long ago
What do you mean he sucks? Maybe compared to Hester in is prime but he's fine. 9.8 yrd career average. Fumbles are a little high with 6/156 chances but only 1/53 over the last 2 years. http://www.nfl.com/player/jeremykerley/2495189/careerstats
The thing that always bothered me about Kerley returning punts is the fair catches. I feel like he never actually returned a punt unless he was at the 50 and there was a mile of freedom ahead. Regardless, he's not going to be returning punts, at least I don't think. If Kerley is our 4th best WR (most-likely 3rd) then we are on par with the best of WR corps in the league in my opinion.
I compared Kerley with Edelman and you are right about % of fair catches: Kerley 44.3%; Edelman 25%. Not sure how much worst field position, worse special teams, etc go into this but the stats agree with you regarding FC.
I'd rather them go with Enunwa and Kerley and cut Owusu. The guy has talent but he's been injury riddled his entire career, can't expect to depend on him for a season when he can't get through training camp healthy.
