At first I thought EA was just saying that we aren't wearing throwbacks this year. Check out his series of tweets. Someone then asks about throwbacks being worn and he replies... Notice how he specifically says no Titans throwbacks yet makes sure to say no word on "throwbacks...yet". As if Titans throwbacks aren't being worn...but another kind might be... EA then replies to another tweet about the possibility of a different type of throwback being worn. Strange how he says..."i'm on it"...as if it is in the works. Someone then explicitly request that the 80's NYJ throwbacks be made. Here' how EA responded... EA, then confirms that the request for 80's throwbacks has been made. I feel like he is teasing us here...and that the NYJ are very close to making the 80's throwbacks a reality.
Let's nip this in the bud right away. They can't wear the eighties throwbacks due to the concussion rules that force them to wear the same helmets all season long. Obviously the Titans and eighties throwback helmets are different colors and they cannot wear them. So no throwbacks until the rules change.
That's not true. Yes...they need to wear the same helmet, but they can wear different decals. This has already been done with other teams that wore throwbacks this past year. The Jets logo can simply be decal-ed over with the old jets logo.
Old farts like me will never understand the obsession to bring back uni's that not only have zero history, but are ugly. Is it the fact that the helmets are politically correct with no mention of NY?
The '80s unis do have history. It may be pug-ugly history for the most part, but it's still history! These were the unis the Jets were wearing when I first became aware of them and I've seen some great things in those unis. Nostalgia erases the bad stuff and leaves you with the good, and seeing the Jets run out in 1980s unis (as near as possible, anyway) would bring back a few memories...
From a normal fans perspective its kind of stupid, but from a marketing perspective its a HUGE money maker...they sell a shit ton of the throwback merchandise
A HUGE ton of money that gets split between 31 teams (Dallas opted out and has their own deal). I LOVE the Jets uni's, the best thing Parcell's did for the franchise bringing them back. My second favorite would be Carolina's. Maybe it's because it's the style I grew up with, which is why I understand why some folks like the 80's style, but don't agree with.
See that's the thing. If they are going to do throwbacks (which I'm not advocating) then I'd like to see it done 100% correct and not like the crap they did back in the mid 1990s when they slapped the current logo on green helmets. I understand the concept of the helmet rule but do players actually wear the exact SAME helmet all year? For games and practice? What happens if your helmet breaks? Do you still have to use it? Or if you do steroids and your head gets bigger? You can get a bigger helmet, yes? _
You would want to slap in the eighties logo on the white helmet? That would look stupid and it wouldn't be the eighties uniform.
This argument about not being able to change helmet color comes up again and again on these forums-- have you people never seen a car wrap? You can make a whole car look like a red bull billboard (windows included), but you don't think they can make a freaking white football helmet green?
It's a good point. I'd actually like to know the reason too. Obviously, no team has tried it yet though. I would actually love a throwback. I'm jealous of teams like the bills and the Rams who can get away with just switching the logo.
