White football players aren't allowed to be fast. Jordy Nelson? "Sneaky fast" Andrew Luck? "Deceptively quick" Aaron Rodgers? "Surprisingly athletic" Edit: key and peele made a sketch making fun of sports reporters like that:
Compared to Wislon or RGIII or Kaepernick, yea Smith is a pocket passer. Compared to Manning, Brady, and Brees, he's a scrambler. The truth is, he's a pocket QB who has just enough speed to make plays if things break down. He has the physical abilities I want in a quarterback. I just want him to make smarter decisions.
yup, white players are smart, scrappy try-hardy types, while black players are psychical freaks that get by on athleticism alone. Its a subtle yet total underestimation of any individual caucasian players physical prowess or black players technical and mental prowess respectively, but then we all knew that…
He's looking good so far, hopefully it translates during the season. He looked good in camp last year but this year feels different. But once again I hope it translates when it truly matters.
Difference between this year and years past is that the offense is actually "winning" some early practices
Oh but we have. People thought last year he would break out, but in a sense had some regression. I hope he breaks out because 4 straight years without a playoff appearance sucks.
Glad to hear Geno is doing well. The bit about him being a "running qb" had me spit up in my beer though. You know, because scrambling QBs work from the shotgun in college and throw for over 400 yards.
Geno Smith playing well; somewhere Rex Ryan is banging his head against a 3 pound bag of pretzel M&Ms.
I disagree. IMO you missed the key component of that quote. The bolded portion is key. Geno has never had 4 days in camp like he has this year. He's never had 4 days straight of throwing no interceptions, making good decisions, showing poise when pressured, etc. Thus, there's no way possible we've heard the bolded part before. Sure, last year we hoped Geno would have a breakout season, but there was no real basis in fact for that hope. We were hoping for it only because we wanted it to happen and the Jets needed for it to happen. There were no real signs of improvement upon which to base that hope.
The team last year said Geno came a million miles from his rookie year. Plenty of Media people thought he would breakout last year. He's looked better this year so far, and I don't think he was awful last yr during TC. I'll hold my judgement until preseason at the very least. I understood the context, but - I just feel - this optimism, it's been heard before. I am glad he's getting better though.
Agree, and my suggestion is to re-sign Chris Johnson. I don't feel it was his fault that he didn't put up the numbers expected. He was in an offense that constantly turned the ball over giving up free points. You can't run the ball very effectively if you are continually playing from behind. Most elite runners say they need a certain number of carries per game to get the feel, flow and rhythm of the game. Johnson never got that opportunity last year. None of the current Jet runners are breakaway threats. Chris Johnson still is and he's available.
The odds of that remote. On the heels of him being shot in that drive-by I sincerely doubt Mac&Bowles would invest in that guy. Really, fuck Chris Johnson at this point. He's not elite anymore either
4 days in TC, is that what we have come to hang our hats on as Jet fans? Geno will not translate this into the regular season, this is flag football for these guys. When it's crunch time and bullets are flying for real, he will be what he has always been, a below average QB that has a couple of moments where he looks ok. The most important piece of the puzzle,(QB) will once again be the downfall of this team. Maybe an easier schedule will help, but at the end of the day, it will only prolong mediocrity at the QB position, keeping the jets at .500 or below.
I wasn't aware that he was involved in a shooting incident, that does make a difference. Despite that, I don't agree that he isn't elite anymore unless he got 250+ carries in a season and still put up mediocre numbers. He averaged 4.3 yards per carry last season on 155 carries. That's not too bad.
We're in agreement on the need, but not the player. IMO Chris Johnson is done. He did little or nothing with the opportunities he had last year, and didn't have the same speed/burst he had before. He has a lot of mileage on his legs. I think we need someone younger and faster.
Agree with that for sure. But in fairness, last year I don't remember a lot of positives coming out of training camp for Geno, except to say that competition was nothing but a farce.
