Exactly right. A hole on the OL leads to stuffed runs, sacked QBs, stalled drives, turn overs, fewer points on the board and more losses. Anyone who understands the game of football understands that, but I guess what else can we expect from a Pats fan? Only a complete knucklehead would say that a Punter or Kicker are more important than the RG.
If he was worth the money Chip Kelly would have kept him. 33 year old RG is not worth what a 29 year old RG is. That's because of the many ways his performance can be worth less in the coming season.
I see where you are coming from, I just don't agree. RG on any NFL team is the easiest position to replace. There is no way in hell a RG has a +/-3 game swing for any NFL team.
Here's the link http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...ex-eagles-guard-evan-mathis-article-1.2311743 I think it would be a good move if the price is right
Or he's a genius. We'll just have to wait and see. He obviously doesn't like Foles much because nobody in their right mind would trade a QB who had a 27-2 TD-Int ratio for them a season later.
One really weak player is going to get exploited by the opponent on literally every down. You can't hide anybody on the offensive line, particularly in the interior where if somebody screws up the QB lost a full second and the back lost 2 yards.
James Carpenter is below average and inconsistent . .. I'd be shocked if he was decent this season. He's an okay zone blocker, but he's overpowered in pass protection on a consistent basis; he's one of the main reasons why Wilson has to run for his life. Mathis would improve the line instanlly and he's perfect for a zone blocking scheme, but his price range has to be ridiculous.
You can't go by anything Chip Kelly does personnel wise. The next thing you know he'll be playing Tebow at cornerback; and signing Dennis Rodman to play center.
Macc said they want to evaluate their guards first. My guess is that they will use 1-2 preseason games to see how Colon, Qvale, Winters, and Aboushi look. If no one shows significant promise, then they will sign Mathis for whatever price he's asking. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Mathis finds a team willing to pay him before then.
Mathis would be placed RG if he was signed. Carpenter would still be the starting LG. I know....I hate it too...but right now the organization seems to think very highly of Carpenter.
Really? Don't you understand by now that the salary paid one player impacts the salary structure of the entire team. If Mathis gets $10 million, even for one or two years, those vets paid less will as much or more in the future because Mathis got$x million. Fans who say " pay him" have no nderstanding of salary structure in the NFL.
He took over a team that went 8-8 and 4-12 and has gone 10-6 with them in back to back seasons. He ditched his best receiver after the first season and still managed to go 10-6 the second season. This year is going to tell us a lot about whether his methods are good over time. He could be anywhere from the beginning of a Ryan-esque trench to the third year of a Belichikian reign by the end of it. We just don't know at this point. I'm leaning towards trench but just slightly at this point.
He really wants more than that. The cut in Philly happened because he wanted a raise. Kelly probably would have kept him for another year if he was playing happy on his contract. When you're trying to do what Kelly is trying to do you can't afford to have well-paid vets grumbling about their contracts. It affects everything else that is going on and sours the locker room. Mathis is not an All-Pro guard. He's a guy who had a career year in 2013 and got voted All-Pro. He's 33 and he's only been to the Pro Bowl twice in his career. His 2014 season was about half as good as the career year in 2013. Belichik would have cut him with no worries this off-season.
