Heyyyy, that's the old "deuce" you're talkin bout... I was but a wee lad just finding his way in a crazy cutthroat world.
and that's how you probably became a fisherman....... the smell was ingrained in your psyche. * * my last serious girlfriend was a psych major..... a PIA for a borderline caveman, but at least she was hot with a great ass
Meh but I can see why so many dislike them. They own Williamsburg and now half of bushwick. Now they are spilling into bed-stuy telling home owners not to sit on their stoop. Then, forgive me for my ignorance, but every Friday their "horn" goes off for everyone to hear it at 7pm. It's like they want brooklyn to be mini Israel. No respect for no one else it seems. Just take shit over and knock others out as long as they gain more land. I attend the block meetings and I'm telling you people are truly , black and white, getting annoyed. Especially since they are now building an 8 story Jewish school in the neighborhood which is going to make the traffic worst. Sent from my LG-LS720 using Tapatalk
Well, there were a few times back in the day that I thought I smelled Mackerel when I should have smelled something else..
Never went in the back, you just sort of knew. Again, we were just a bunch of young punks. It was like going down to the Village for the first time or to Canal Street to pick up fireworks or to Carlsen Imports to pick up track flats that the major sports stores (Herman's) didn't carry. While you enjoyed the amusing neighborhood 'exotics,' your instincts (and numbers) kept you out of trouble, i.e. knowing that you were in the midst of a different element and that "when in doubt, don't." But Times Sq. was cool. Playland, Fascination, the Broadway Arcade. We not only had numbers, we wore light kicks - no one was catching us. : )
I remember those Canal street runs every summer for fireworks. I came home with shopping bags full of everything from M80's to SkyRockets! Put on my own show in 145th st. park next to the HRD. We used to go down to Delancey St. to get discounts on clothes and such too. Learned how to haggle from my trips there. Also learned the MTA subway free transfer system. I could go anywhere in the city almost only paying one fare.
Anybody remember the black man on the board with wheels who was cut off at the hips on the subways? I used to see him on the 1 Train often. I knew his story but forget. I think he might've been a veteran. I gave him anything I could give up every time I saw him. It was gut wrenching. He struck me as such a tough dude. Whenever I happen to talk with people from the city from back then, many times he comes up and was well known.
I remember his voice. He had to learn to speak again because his diaphragm was damaged in the accident. Usually people gawked at a sight like that but not with this guy. Once you'd seen him you didn't want to stretch out the experience. He got lots of change from people tho.
I saw him so many that I think he started to recognize me. I might've talked to him, don't remember tho. Think I did tho thinking about it now. And it wasn't just commuting to work or school. It was when I was out there carousing and exploring, which was often. It was like a spiritual experience for me ever after seeing unfortunate people like him. I have plenty of war stories from back then, and many people I knew didn't survive, some murdered. I feel fortunate, and lucky, having gone through those days.
Look whats happening to the hudson valley. East Ramapo is a colossal fucking mess. Ruining everything from schools to property taxes. These ultra orthodox no better than Hitler mother fuckers are trying to take over everything.
Raymond Battista, he wasn't a veteran, he was run over by a train as a kid in P.R., he was making $15-$20 an hour back in the 1980's
Wow, okay. I think he made the news at the time, I recall him making a living out of those circumstances now that you bring it up.
They talked to him for a piece in New York Magazine back in the 80's, I'm sure there were other articles too, especially after he made a cameo in the movie Kids in the 90's
Wow, how about that. There's more out there about him than I realized. And I didn't know about the movie, never heard of it. You're filling in some blanks for me from those days... Lol
I am in fact going through the same issues with these type of people you noted. I live in a pre-war building, this jewish run building management company bought the lease to the building for 30 years from this family that like owns tons of land across manhattan. Anyways, fuck these assholes. All they do is try to harass us tenants and try to get this place converted into a 5-five star hotel for europeans
