To me this is a big deal. And not something to be dismissed. It created a distraction for the team and was embarrassing on a national level. Sandy didn't even notify his manager about it and we all saw what happened at his presser. Terry said he knew nothing about it. This is not on Melvin or Boras. This is strictly on the Mets. The Brewers traded the same player less than 24 hours later and the Astros had no concerns about his hip. Houston is not an incompetent organization. And Jeff Luhnow is a guy who knows what he is doing. So what might have happened is that Sandy tried to raise the stakes and Melvin called his bluff. And Sandy folded. Sandy does not deny that.
I'd take Venable over nobody. While other teams make deals he can't pull the trigger. Just like last year at the Winter Meetings when there was a ton of trades and Sandy did nothing. Rumor right now is no Jay Bruce deal. Give me my Marlon Byrd and I'll be happy.
My line of thinking is, why would these teams consider trading the Mets anybody significant for Wheeler who won't even pitch meaningful innings in 2016? I think Sandy is too hesitant to sweeten the pot with a prospect he drafted
Nothing/Davis/Venable people will be irate. If the Nationals get Cespedes and the Mets get Nothing/Davis/Venable I think you would see the most upset fan base to ever exist. # melodramatic
He got Wheeler in a trade. I wouldn't mind keeping him. And making trades for smaller pieces like Byrd or Prado.
For Cespedes half of me would be thrilled. The other half will be like he's a rental. This is crazy! I want them to get him if they are going to be committed to resigning him. Which I don't believe they will do. I don't want to trade wheeler & someone else for a player that's going to be here for 2 months. That seems crazy. Reluctantly maybe a smaller piece player is our only real option at this point?
For Cespedes you use medium grade chips because he's a summer rental. I wouldn't give up Wheeler for him. Btw the Orioles got Parra. You can make moves if you want to.
If the trade was never done how was he supposed to call Terry on the bench and tell him about a trade? You don't know what happened. If Sandy didn't want him for health concerns, and what he had to give up, that's his choice. Just because Houston made the trade for what they deemed as worth what they had to give up has nothing to do with Sandy, and him deciding to keep Wheeler. You don't decide on the spot what's good and what's bad. You wait and see how it works out. Like drafting a football player. You don't decide what it is based on tweets from a bunch of hacks. That's like reacting to Manish Mehta's or Brian Costello's analysis of something.
You tell your manager that a deal is on the table. You don't keep him in the dark. You can believe the health excuse if you want to and maybe it's true. But based on what I've read he has no hip problems. I think the story about trying to cut money after agreeing to a deal has legs. Anyways Jay Bruce is not in the Reds lineup tonight. PS the Gomez trade was done. Sandy called it off before official.
Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 1m1 minute ago Source: #Mets get Cespedes. Bruce Levine first. I love it only if they didn't give up wheeler.
LOL, that's stupid. Terry was trying to win a game. He doesn't care about a bunch of tweeters, and there's no hotline down to the dugout with moment by moment updates about what might happen. You play your players to win the game. You don't react to bunch of tweeting bs. Gomez was injured, the info about it is technical and vary's on what the reports were. That Paper with the blogger also has articles on that. Cespedes to the Mets...Beautiful!
It's pretty obvious that it was a complete distraction and affected Terry's ability to manage the team. And he was obviously very pissed off about it. Looks like a good deal for Cespedes rental. Wheeler not included.
They got Cespedes and they kept Wheeler. Cespedes is a legit slugger, and that's right there with a Gomez move as far as need. Better in the short term Boy how did the idiot manage that?
