I don't think this got pulled cause of social media, well directly. It's possible the Brewers got cold feet cause of Wheeler's physical (although that would have been the quickest gathering of medical info I can remember), and it's also possible the Mets pulled the deal cause it leaked prematurely and Sandy never signed off on it - ergo Terry not knowing shit until the fans started giving Flores standing ovations and he started crying.
Can't blame the media here. This trade probably was done. Either the Meds or some odd thing happened to change it. You can see how Sandy was reacting that he was not happy with how things happened. Literally everyone was reporting it. Mets writers, brewers writers, I can't get on anyone.
Ken Rosenthal reporting the Mets backed out of the deal because of an issue with Gomez's hip. Yeah, that Scott Boras was attached to it.
Well at the very least it's good to hear that Wheeler wasn't the issue. But who knows at this point. Go get Cespedes! He can't play CF but he will come cheaper and doesn't have injury concerns.
The fact that he isnt signed for next season is the reason why he should come cheaper. You think Cespesdes would fetch back a bigger player/prospect than Wheeler? I find that hard to believe. Gomez is the better all around player even though Cespedes has had the better season. Plus both players have different weaknesses. With Gomez its injuries. Cespedes doesnt have speed and is also a clubhouse concern (supposedly). I think Detroit will get back a decent player for him but nowhere near the upside of Wheeler.
I have no idea why you think crying because he got traded from a team he had spent over 1/3 of his life on makes him soft.
Oh well, that sucked. Happy Sandy didn't want to risk getting a guy with hip issues. A hammy is one thing, but a hip is scary. Better safe than sorry. But a healthy Gomez woulda been awesome. Anybody less, or nothing, is a bit of a let down now. But now I want Cespedes, a nice RH batting slugger....Or anybody at this point Nothing wrong with Flores' reaction. He's a great kid. Remember, he started playing pro when he was 16. He really cared about the team and his teammates A guy like that has a different life experience than most people, it's somewhat sheltered, and his education might be limited. Terry alluded to it : these are people, and even kids sometimes. Not a thing wrong with Flores
Gomez fit into next year with his contract too. If it's about Gomez' hip his value went down. Maybe if he clears the medical stuff he can still be had for less ? Waivers, or over the winter even? Prolly on to plan B tho at this point
Good thing for us there are plan B's out there. Im not down too much today cause there are still too many available bats out there still for us not to end up with someone that will provide an upgrade. Even if its a Parra or Bruce , I think by 4pm tomorrow we'll have done something. As for Gomez , when healthy he is the best talent currently available but I cant imagine the backlash from the fanbase if the trade went through and 2 weeks from now the hip flares up and he's not playing at 100 percent or has to sit during important games. That would not be pretty. He's probably not even playing at 100 percent right now because we've all seen the type of player he is when fully healthy. I still would've made the trade , but if the team is that sure the hip is a problem I gotta go with that.
I never really liked giving up Wheeler anyways. I think he has more of an upside than Gomez but Gomez would have helped the team now even though in recent weeks he hasn't been hitting. If I trade for a guy for the stretch run I don't want somebody who's in a slump. We have enough of that already. A summer rental like Cespedes would be great but you do not give up a prime asset for a summer rental. You give them two more B line prospects. Or maybe Colon and one prospect if they feel they need more pitching. Colon should have value despite yesterday as a spot starter, etc.
New name in the potential outfield pool..Ben Revere. He isnt the bopper we need but could be a really nice speed option for us. Wouldnt mind him or Rajai Davis.
Milwaukee source reporting that the Mets killed the deal not because of medicals but because they asked for money at the last minute: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/320022541.html That source said in initial talks, the Mets wanted the Brewers to take centerfielder Juan Lagares in the trade. The Brewers said no, in part because Lagares has an elbow issue but also because he has a four-year, $23 million contract extension that kicks in next year and they didn't want to pick up the money. So, after further talks, it was decided that the Brewers would take Flores in addition to Wheeler, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery and won't be able to pitch before next June. The source said the Mets then asked the Brewers to throw in the 2016 Competitive Balance Round B pick they were recently awarded and the Brewers said no. The source said the Brewers then were asked to put some money in the trade to cover part of what's remaining on Gomez's contract, including a $9 million salary next year. Considering the talent level of Gomez and his reasonable contract, the Brewers understandably declined to put any cash into the deal. It was only then, according to the source, that the Mets came back and said they were calling off the deal because of concerns over Gomez's medical records.
