The play I would eliminate would still be the Mccaffrey catch. Denver's offense had done nothing before that. They were totally out of it. We had all of the momentum. We had just blocked a punt and allowed Curtis to run it in from one yard out. It was 10-0. That Mccaffrey play gave the Broncos confidence and life in a game in which they had failed to establish either one well into the 3rd quarter. The Byars fumble was a disaster, but we had maintained momentum and control of the game well after that. And not recovering the kickoff was an enormous blunder, but the Broncos had already woken up by then. They were going to be an extremely tough out once they scored there, no matter what we did. The throw and catch to Mccaffrey changed everything. The last quarter and a half of that game was an avalanche and that play got the snow falling.
I would have preferred Marino and if you read entire post I said "not too unhappy" - for me it was not as bad a choice as multiple others in the 80s as with O'Brie we had a very serviceable QB who had the ability to make all the throws - compare that with 1986 when Jets took Mike Haight over any of these Tom Newberry, John Offerdahl, Pepper Johnson, Ernest Givens or Webster Slaughter who were all available and taken in Rd 2, Pat Swilling or John Taylor available in Rd 3 - OR 1987 when drafting Roger Vick with Bruce Armstrong and Haris Barton available OR 1988 when drafting Dave Cadigan when Michael Irvin and Randall McDaniel were available. Three years where we could have had an all pro line and any QB with an arm and intelligence would have blossomed - that would have given O'Brien or Marino the ability to dissect opponents at will - still we wait and hope things will improve and we cheer for a team that wins it all!!
That one hurt. The Jets were set to make a serious run and we had to deal with Ric Mirer. If Parcells would went to Ray Lucas earlier we would have made the playoffs.
I looked over your post and what you said was that you're not too unhappy with O'Brien over Marino. I am unhappy about it because Marino was HOF and Ken was a good not great Qb. I liked O'Brien but he isn't in the same category as Marino.
I find it interesting that for all the bitching and moaning about taking O'Brien over Marino no one seems to lose any sleep about taking Al Toon over Jerry Rice.
Eh a lot of guys passed on Brady multiple times, I can't look back on that one. Kyle Brady over Warren Sapp was a LOT worse in terms of stupidity. You could argue O'Brien and Marino too but at least O'Brien was a solid pro that got undermined by a bad offensive line (which exacerbated his own sloooooow release). But yeah I think the OP was looking more for specific plays and they've all been named. Another one I'd add is the '98 AFC Championship in Denver when whoever it was (Victor Green) blew coverage on a long bomb that got Denver back in the game.
I think we were already down 23-10 when Van Dyke fumbled, it just ended the comeback. The blown kickoff was bad but it was a windy day in Denver, the Martin/Byars fumbles were actually worse in terms of guys who never fumble happen to fumble in that game.
Al Toon was a darn good player, he might have been better than say, Andre Reed (who was a HOF'er) if he didn't get hurt.
Thats something I cant assume. I think if we were up 19-17 on that PIT final drive , they are walking home with a 20-19 lead. And then we're talking about one of the most crushing losses in Jets history.
Not really. As I stated before , the offense was much more clutch during those seasons late in the game. Plus I never said that if they had another chance they would score. I think they would've though and its too bad we didnt get the chance.

The point is, if you went back in time to 2000 and made that pick at 179, who knows how the NFL would look today? Definitely the move I would make.
His back wasn't strong enough to carry all of those players. Marino, I hated that dude so much because his mechanics was damn near flawless. Best pure passer ever. It's understandable why fans are much more disappointed in Marino over Rice.
