I disagree. Maybe not an all-time great, but Chad would've been a Jets great in my opinion. Our history of QBs especially the recent years' list of QBs we've had help prove my point. He would've don't great things for this team in which the likes of QBs post Sanchez 2010 couldn't do. I haven't given up on Geno yet but so far same principle applies.
Had Chad stayed healthy I think he eventually would have won a SB and challenged Namath for the GJOAT. _
Wayne played 10 seasons with us, 6 without missing a game and 2 missing only 1. That last year in 2005 he was done, but we definitely got more out of that guy than what anyone could have expected. That dude took some crazy hits.......but always held onto the ball.
I don't know about that. Penny was a great Jet, and that's what the OP states. It's not HOF players, it's "great Jet" players. I think Penny still holds the completion percentage record in the NFL. If he stays healthy and doesn't suffer the arm injuries we don't know how well he and the Jets might have done. Was he Aaron Rodgers? No, but he was very good. Byrd I don't remember enough about to know, but I looked him up and he had 27 sacks and a safety his first 3 seasons. That's not too shabby. nfl.com doesn't show any tackles for him, but I find that hard to believe.
Huh? Vilma's career with the Jets wasn't cut short by injury. He was traded to the Saints or signed as a FA, and it wasn't because of his injuries. Kris Jenkins was older and already injury-prone, but he could have played longer and been a whole lot more productive, so he does fit. I wanted the Jets to draft Jenkins the year he came out of Maryland. Jenkins went in the 2nd round to the Panthers a few picks ahead of the Jets, where they took Jenkins' Maryland teammate, LaMont Jordan. In the 1st round, the Jets took Santana Moss. Who knows, with a trade down in the 1st, the Jets could possibly have gotten Jenkins. One can only dream what might have happened for the Jets if Jenkins had spent his whole career here.
I nominate one JOE WILLIE NAMATH. He was already damaged goods when we got him. Think what his career might have been like if he had never had those knee injuries. Another is Freeman McNeil. He was a great Jet, and was knicked up with injuries much of the time. Think about what he could have produced if he had stayed healthy.
IMO, if Chad stayed healthy - he would've surpassed Namath for GJOAT IMO. To me, he's still the most intelligent Jet QB ever. Just the saw the game so much differently then most. I really like Namath, but Chad's IQ was just unreal. I learned so much from watching Chad play.
Namath had that magnificent arm and mentality, but Chad was just so accurate and smart. Even before his injuries, he made up for his lack of arm strength with precision and vision. I still remember him throwing 18 yard strikes to a wide open Coles downfield almost at will. That 2002 season was one of the most enjoyable ever. _
Except once and some idiot Jet fans killed him for it. That dude was tough as nails. Definitely top 5 all time toughest. _
I don't know if I'd go as far as to say he'd have become the GJOAT over Namath, but I do think he could have at least statistically probably become the top Jets QB and I think with a good team around him, the Jets could have at least made, if not won a SB or two. IMO he'd have to have led the Jets to at least a couple of SB wins to be considered the GJOAT over Namath, simply because of what Namath meant to the Jets, AFL and how the game changed because of him. Chad was like a coach on the field. He was one of the few players coming out of college that I really wanted the Jets to draft and they actually did. I was thrilled. The Jets ticked me off keeping him on the bench as long as they did and playing Ninny Intecepteverde. He was a QB that I think could have started his rookie season and played very well. I love this clip, BTW, how he totally fakes that Bills DB out of his jock. I'll bet that guy never lived that down! LOL
I think that's fair. Statistically he probably would have passed him but would have needed 2 SBs to topple JWN. _
Chad showed me the importance of throwing the receiver open and placement skills. He never had the strongest arm, but he knew where the receiver would be and knew exactly where to fit the football. Chad was special. Chad / JWN both polar opposite QBs - but they were great. 2002, 2004 - we had chances for sure.
I don't know if Chad has any interest in coaching, but if he does, I still have hopes that the Jets will bring him back. I think he would make a great QB coach and probably OC, maybe even HC.
