We all want to see the Jets in the playoffs every year, but that's just not realistic. Wanting or expecting to see the Jets in the playoffs this season is ridiculous if for no other reason than who we have at QB and on the OL! You have to be realistic and realize where the team is and adjust your wants/expectations accordingly or you're setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment. You keep talking like I think we have a great OL and am unaware of the problems. That isn't the case. I know that the OL is questionable at best, but it's the best that could be done, short of panicking and making a knee jerk reaction and drafting for need and reaching for players at OG. You don't throw away the future for one season, however. I agree with you that the Jets have mishandled the OL since Brick and Mangold were drafted. Mac can't fix everything in one off season, even though he really tried. Mac had a plan. He did consider need along with BAP. I think he had a great draft. Could it have been better? Possibly, but one can't say for sure, because with one different pick that he made, it could have caused a cascade that would have changed every other subsequent pick that he made, and we might not have wound up with as good a draft as we did. As I said earlier, this season should not be about wins and losses or the playoffs for Jets fans. We have a new CS (including a rookie HC) with probably a totally different approach and philosophy to handling the team, a totally new offensive system, and even though the defensive alignments will be basically the same, the approach, philosophy and responsibilities could be radically different for players. We have a number of new starters and players who have to develop chemistry with their teammates, and know how they will react and where they will be at any given time. We have what has been an overall bad and inconsistent young QB and an older QB coming off an injury who has never been that good and who is a stopgap and mentor. We still don't have an LBers who excel in coverage, and we have a starting ILB who, while he makes a lot of tackles, is glacially slow and can't get to a lot of plays. We either have old or unproven players and a player who is too heavy and better suited for the DT position in a 4-3 playing OLB. We don't have a RB who is a topflight receiver out of the backfield and who can take it to the house from anywhere on the field. We don't have at true two-way TE. Rather than obsessing about the OL, I think it would behoove you to step back and consider these other factors and the other holes we have on the team, and temper your wants and expectations. You'll be a lot happier.
A great GM has their own mind and make their own decisions. Why do we always say, "oh no one does this" or "no one does that". You do whats best for your team period. I guess you forgot that Ravens game a while back where Mangold [w/ no good guards] was out and Ngata sat on Mark Sanchez's shoulder, marking the beginning of the end. You have to realize how dangerous interior pressure is on QBs. When it comes to guards, you aren't breaking the bank for one, so I think the guy playing the straw-man argument is you sir.
The game is won in the trenches, wherever you like it or not. We can get to the playoffs this year, I believe it. This is the best team we've had since 2010. I am not saying playoffs or bust. I think we have the talent to make some noise in our conference. Again, I think we are jumping all over the place. If you want to talk about Dee v Warmack fine, but you haven't seen me talk about drafting a G high in the past draft. Though, I really liked La'el Collins and I told you how good he was. Mac can't fix everything, he's done good so far, but my beef is that we missed on OTHER opportunities to fix the line. That's not on Mac, not yet anyway. The defense is fine for now, we need to be more well-balanced as a team. You'll start complaining when Colon starts holding close to the goal-line and effectively ruins our chances at scoring 7 points in a Patriots game.
The thing is, Geno wants to beat you with his arm, he will do everything he can do stay with that - if that means holding onto the ball for 4 seconds, he will do it. I go back to the Packers game on that Sudfeld interception. That was interior pressure, I believe that got to Geno before he was able to set his feet and make the throw. That play ruined all of the momentum for that game, and we never really recovered from losing that game. Something tells me Evan Mathis isn't as good as he was hyped up to be. PFF granted him high, but maybe there is something else.
You have no idea what a straw man argument is. You keep talking like I have no idea "how dangerous interior pressure is on QBs." I am fully aware, just as aware as you. The difference is you're going absolutely nuts, acting like an hysterical little girl having a hissy fit. You ignore all the facts and just want to obsess on the OG position. I accept that it's a problem, but that knowledge is tempered by the fact that Mac did all he could to fix it up to this point, and realize that the odds of our being a playoff team this season were probably slim and none anyway, so I'm not panicking. This season will be what it will be. Mac could still make a trade or sign an OG camp cut or two that will help. Brewer is pretty decent. He might wind up starting at RG. Why not wait and see what reports are out of TC and see how the team looks in preseason before going completely nuts? You're just being ridiculous.
This argument as a whole is a sham. You are trying to establish rules on the draft that don't even exist. You don't take this player this high or that - it's awful logic. Interior pressure is becoming the new way of getting to the QB, so don't act like it's not an issue when it's a HUGE issue. Especially in the AFC East. You adjust and adapt. Just like WRs were never this popular, things change. Running backs were getting drafted high, the game has changed and teams have adjusted their respective draft boards. Lock it up, James Brewer is going to save the offensive line! Now, I know you are better then that. There is nothing great about Colon, or Winters or Oday. I hope someone steps up, but I doubt it. Matter of fact, Brewer looks to be nothing more then a camp body http://thejetsblog.com/bga/bga-scouting-james-brewer/ 2014 where he gave up five pressures – to five different players – in just 21 pass block attempts versus the Jags. That's worse then Winters. I hope someone steps up though.
I know how important the trenches are. I don't think you're realistic at all that this team can make it to the playoffs. You're expecting an almost historic turnaround from last season (a 5 or 6 game improvement). Someone posted the stats on that recently, and I don't think it doable for all the reasons I've enumerated, which you just seem to blithely ignore or gloss over. The OTHER opportunities are ancient history. There's nothing we can do about that. You don't fault Mac, but yet are panicking. You need to give him time to fix the situation. Yes, things aren't as they should be at OG and they NEED to be improved. I firmly believe that they will be, but it may take a season or two to get the OL we want. I agree that the team needs to be more balanced, but again that is going to take time. Rex and Tanny ignored the offense and focused almost exclusively on the D. Guess what? Bowles is a former DC too. Did you expect the Jets and Mac to just ignore that? Mac brought in Marshall, Devin Smith, Ridley, Stacy, Carpenter (after trying to sign the top two FA OGs), Kellen Davis, and Brewer. Maybe once Evan Mathis realizes that no one is going to pay $6 million a year to a 33 year-old OG, he'll come down on his demands and maybe Mac signs him. The team hasn't even practiced in pads yet. Why don't you wait until TC and see how things go? You might just find that all your worrying and obsessing were for nothing. I'm not sure that Colon even makes the team, much less is starting.
You don't know what Geno will do or be like this year. Gailey may have designed the offense for the ball to be out of Geno's hands within 3 seconds, and if he can't do that consistently, then he might find a seat on the bench and Fitz be starting. This isn't you. I don't know what's going on with you or why you are in full-fledged panic mode this early, but you've been around long enough and are too knowledgeable to be acting and talking this way.
No, it isn't. It's YOUR logic that flies in the face of how the best GMs in the game think and operate. If you can't see that, then you don't know nearly as much about the game as you think you do, or as I thought you do. Yes, things chance and one has to adapt. The OG position has become more important, but it's still not ever worth a top 10 draft pick imo. Getting interior pressure is not new. It's been the best way to pressure a QB for years because you're right in his face. The difference is that previously in 3-4 Ds, the NTs were generally fatter, slower and/or playing two gaps and not rushing the QB. In some versions of the 3-4 the DEs first responsibility wasn't rushing the QB either. That responsibility was the province of the OLBs or blitzers. I didn't say that Brewer was going to be the savior, but he could help. You know as well as I that players have bad years, or struggle with one team (for whatever reason), then go to another team and play reasonably well if not very well. I'm not saying that will happen with Brewer, but it could. Again, under the circumstances, that was the best Mac could do. Deal with it.
NFL turnarounds happen quick, happens almost yearly. I think if the players hold themselves more accountable, we have a better system on offense that tailors to the players's strengths. Better coaching will improve this team by default. 8 to 10 wins is absolutely achievable. The only thing that could hold the Jets back from making the playoffs, is awful QB play and the interior offensive line. I truly believe that. I don't have confidence in the OGs, but I've been wrong before.
Geno ain't getting rid of the ball quick, he never did in college and highly doubt he does now. The quick throws, Geno always struggled with this. Slants, those throws, he struggles completing those passes. We won't even talk about him making quicker decisions. I just look at what the Jets are facing and there is a cause for concern. Suh is an amazing player, you got Dareus. Maybe I am over-exaggerating a little bit, but I am a little pessimistic in terms of QB protection. It can make or break a season. I also quit smoking cigs the other day and I've been going a little crazy lol so work with me here.
So that explains it!!! I KNEW something was going on with you! I respect you for quitting and know that is difficult. Hang in there. I'm glad you're quitting for your sake. OK, now that's fair, and the 101 I know and like. Sorry, if I was rough on you, but was just trying to get through to the 101 I know. Yes, Suh and Dareus are topflight, dangerous players. It is definitely a concern. Geno probably isn't going to improve much, but I'm willing to wait and see what Gailey is able to do with him since Gailey is known for getting the best out of his QBs, and he has been so solidly in Geno's corner. Hopefully, he knows something that we don't. Running more spread-type plays should help Geno's comfort level at least. Hopefully, he benefitted somehow from that offseason program he did. The bottom line is that regardless of how Gailey thinks about Geno, I don't think Bowles will stick with Geno very long if he doesn't elevate his level of play. If he doesn't get rid of the ball sooner, make better decisions, and cut down on the TOs, I think he will find himself on the bench, and gone at season's end. Being a little pessimistic and concerned is fine and fair. That's where my thinking is. I'm not unconcerned. I just think it is too much to expect for the Jets to be a playoff team this year, even with the infusion of talent, and the respect and hopes that I have for Bowles. If it happens great, I will be ecstatic, but I'm not going to expect or even hope for it, because I just think the Jets have too many things to over come, not the least of which should be improved Buffalo and Miami teams. Even if the Jets somehow sneak into the playoffs, I think it totally unrealistic to think that they could get hot and win it all. I can't see that happening with Geno at QB or the OL we have, and maybe not even with the D we have. Gilchrist might wind up being a flop as could Pryor. Davis may not be able to step up his play and the team still get killed over the middle by RBs and TEs. Mauldin could take a year or two to develop or be a nice story, but not an NFL caliber player. Not having Richardson for 4 games could be huge. I think everything would have to go perfectly and fall into place for the Jets in order for them to even make the playoffs, and when has that ever happened for the Jets?
Yeah, nicotine withdrawal sucks big time; wish I never got into this habit, but oh well. One day at a time. No hard feelings dude btw - heated debates are always good ones. I don't expect you or anyone else to have the same vision in regards to building a football team. Gailey will need to orchestrate a masterpiece to get Geno to get rid of the ball faster. I have a strong concern for how these pieces are going to fit. Last season left a very sour taste in my mouth in terms of how the young talent was progressing. This coaching staff and GM though, I hope they can coach these guys up and try and hide some of the deficiencies on the roster. If successful, we can be a decent team. 8 to 10 wins IMO. I think the defense is going to be just fine, we have an assortment of guys that have strong motors, don't quit on plays. Bowles, his style of coaching is to get guys in position to make plays - Rex wasn't like that at all really, it was about making him fit on his scheme and his scheme alone. It took me a while to realize that. The offense is my real reason for concern here. Interior protection is not good, teams will expose that.
I'm on day 19 myself... can't believe how difficult an addiction it is to break. i figure it's a good 3 month process to truly become a non-smoker (instead of just a smoker who is currently not smoking). a very tough challenge for sure. but hang in there......it's starting to get a little easier now that i've passed the 2 week mark. it's the right choice, and you can do it. one thing i keep telling myself when the urges hit..........i don't want to have to go thru this process again! lol also i like the My Last Cigarette app. it tracks how many days it's been, how much money you've saved, how many cigarettes you haven't smoked, as well as carbon monoxide, circulation improvements, etc... gives me a little extra motivation.
Good. It was never personal on my part. I was just shocked because the way you were responding is not the you I've come to know over the last year or so. I can understand last season leaving a very sour taste in your mouth. It did mine as well, and I'm sure many others. I think we will see a vast difference with young players this season, not only because of the differences between Rex and Bowles and how they handle things, but also because of the rest of the CS, and the types of players that Mac drafted vs. Idzik. Overall, for the reasons you state, and others, I think the D will be basically fine, but still have concern about TEs and RBs over the middle. Until Bowles proves he can shut that aspect down, it will be a concern for me. I agree that the offense is the major area of concern. That's why I can't see them making the playoffs, but it will no doubt be interesting.
Yeah, I use the Cessation nation app myself as motivation. I'm on day 7, the last 2 days really sucked, but I think it's starting to wear down a little bit. I wish I could reprogram my brain. I've been drinking Cranberry Juice a lot, because I read somewhere when you have these little withdrawals, low blood sugar plays a role and it does help a little bit. I might even pick up running again because, I feel my breathing is a little bit better. I don't want to go through this again, especially the first 3 days - this is prob my 2nd time trying, hopefully no 3rd time. Good luck to you BacktoQueens! We'll need to keep our progress as the football season begins! Thanks for the support there.
Yeah, it's been a weird process personally. I think one of the keys also in regards to TE / RBs is Antonio Allen - if Bowles really wants to put players in situations to succeed, AA needs to be one of our enforcers over the middle. I just remember that one game where he played really well against Gronk - battled him all game long and even got an interception.
I quit 3 times before my 20th birthday. It took the death of my mother from cancer to get me to stay quit. It's really hard to stay quit because it's an addiction to a physical substance and all you have to do is have a small relapse and you're hooked again. The way I finally got it done was to give myself permission to smoke as much as I wanted too but to never let my hands touch a cigarette again. It took about a week for my friends to tell me to fuck off when I asked them to light a cigarette for me and put it in my lips. True story. I never smoked again.
Interesting discussion on this thread. On the point that the guards could be the fatal flaw to this season, one has to acknowledge the connection to the poor quality of the Qb. We all know Smith holds the ball too long, and imo people here who want to blame that on Marty are living in a fantasy land. Gailey is not going to be able to fix that just by calling plays. And as long as Smith holds it too long, he will be vulnerable to the pass rush. In other words I am not saying the OL is top quality or anything like it. Once you get past Mangold and Ferguson, pretty much everyone else is mediocre. Perhaps Carpenter will be an improvement, but expecting more than a slight improvement will probably lead to disappointment. But it's really Smith that is the problem here, and I have no patience for those who want to blame all his problems on the OL. Having said that, I do want to support 101's complaints about signing Milliner when that pick could have been used elsewhere. Not sure OL was the best place, and I do not recall anyone talking specifically about Warnack. But that's partly because the FO had previously let Revis go withiout attempting to keep him, which fed into the strategy of drafting Milliner. That to be clear is not an excuse for drafting Milliner, since the evil was done before that point and was the real source of the problem. I am just talking about why there were not more negative assessments of hte Milliner draft at the time.
Yeah, but he wanted starter money and don't blame them too much for that. Its not like Leon went out and dominated after they let him go.
