I haven't seen or said myself Namath sucked or wasn't very talented passer. These Namath crazies are funny. That why I just gave up.

That's the article that started this thread. Junc ignores articles like this and runs right back to the same arguments he's been using for 10 years - interceptions, AFL inferiority, anecdotal stats from single games, the Jets got unfair advantages in the 68 playoffs- blah, blah blah. It's useless. Then he defends Brady like Brady was his brother. Unbelievable.

Hi, I am a Dolphins fan who lives in NYC, lurks here and occasionally posts.

Re the subject of the thread, I used to think Namath was overrated and didn't belong in the Hall of Fame. I eventually realized I was wrong, courtesy of articles like the one above, talking to knowledgeable older fans (I'm old enough to have seen him on TV in the 70s, but that's not much of a basis for evaluation), and reading posts like those on this thread.

But that's not why I am posting now. Rather, I want to say: this is a great board. You have a lot of smart and very knowledgeable posters and a lot of posters, period. Even he is wrong in this instance (IMO), junc is one of the reasons this is a great board.

I wish you all could get along better.

We were discussing HOFers, I don't care if Cotton Davidson had an ewual INT rate.

Tittle wasn't his era, Conerly wasn't his era, Van Brocklin wasn't his era. Stabler isn't in the Hall, Blanda made it as a Kicker and QB

No one is comparing Joe to players of today but why would Peyton Manning suck in that era?

you guys keep bringing up yards and sacks. what good are yards w/o points? and would you rather take a few more sacks w/ a few less INTs?

think about what? Joe is an all time great TALENT, did Walsh tell Montana to emulate Namath's career? or some of Joe's great qualities? Joe was as physically gifted QB that has ever played, that is not the discussion.

it's a great deflection, you'll get a lot of likes but it is meaningless to this discussion. This discussion is about what he actually accomplished on the field.

he was a Super Bowl champion Junc. you know? the ultimate accomplishment. scoring enough points over the course of a season to win the fucking superbowl

the only reason the discussion shifted to things like walsh's opinion is because everyone else but you can recognize what he actually accomplished on the field

I defend reality whether good for bad for my team. I wish Joe gave me an argument the way Brady does, I wish Joe had half the career Brady has had. we'd have a lot more SBs if that was the case.

I don't ignore anything that relates to the discussion.

    to recap:

    -all time great talent
-not many, if any, more important figures in the history of the sport
-injuries robbed him of great career
-had great seasons and great moments

Nowhere am I bashing Joe or saying he doesn't belong in the HOF. I post valid reasons and you dismiss them. INTs aren't important but sacks taken are, points aren't important but yards are. I don't apologize for having a different opinion than the masses, I like to see things realistically and not through homer glasses.

that wasn't the year he had 4,000 yds, he had a little over 3,000 yds(still a good total but 3rd in the AFL).

he won a SB, did a great job helping that team win, they were a great TEAM w/ a top ranked D that nearly shut out Baltimore in the SB. some of you guys act like Joe did it all by himself. He was a huge part but just a part and would never win another playoff game in his career. I recognize how great he was early in his career, my point has been(and backed up by reality) was that he did not have a great CAREER. Much of that was due to injuries but AGAIN durability counts. if he never plays again after SB III the legend would be much greater than it already is but he played another decade and had many poor seasons.

I am not going stir crazy at all, I am the calm one. the ones bashing me are the ones losing their minds over the opinion of another poster. I simply post my opinions and back them up, others can choose whether they care or not.

Of course we should celebrate SB III and celebrate Joe. That's not the point, we need to discuss things realistically. pretending Joe was one of the best ever is not being realistic.

And a great deal of what he did on the field never shows up in your precious stats. There are intangibles that you'll never see if you don't open your eyes - and that refers to everything in life, not just this silly game.

Here's a cut and paste of a post I made last night in a BS thread about the shotgun:

"I don't remember the shotgun being used then, but I do remember the first game he played that year was one of the most memorable losses in Jets history for anyone there. It was Thanksgiving weekend at Shea and Namath was to suit up but not play because his rehab from a preseason game injury and surgery was not completed. Al Woodall (I think) had gotten hurt Friday or Saturday and could not play so Bob Davis was the only healthy QB available and started the game. It was a cloudy, cold, miserable day and Davis was the same before getting knocked out shortly before the half.

This is probably the moment that some misguided reporter referenced when he said that Jets fans were so terrible that they even cheered their own players getting hurt. What actually happened was not cheering that anyone got hurt, but that not many people seemed to know Namath was the last man standing, even if standing somewhat gingerly. You have to remember there was no interweb and with the holiday, a lot of people hadn't heard the news about Woodall (or whoever) being unavailable. But as the few of us aware realized Namath was the only QB left a small cheer began and very slowly built until the other 60,000 realized Namath was taking off that big warmup parka and loosening up his arm as the place then roared. It literally made the hair on the back of my neck stand up and I remember that today.

The Jets were down 17-0 when Namath came in and dominated in the second half, throwing three touchdown passes, the first a bomb to Richard Caster. San Francisco scored after that one and held on for a 24-21 win but anyone watching that game not only saw, but felt, the huge momentum swing when number 12 hit the field; the game just ended a minute or two too early for the Jets.

Even Junc would have no argument if he experienced that but he'll probably look up the stats and tell us about seventeen other non-HOF quarterbacks whose numbers are better.
    Sucks for him."

The injury referred to happened when Namath made a tackle on a fumble recovery in a preseason game. Is that something your boy Brady would be doing?

what am I supposed to be impressed w/? that he led us back and we still lost? this is your argument? so we should celebrate Sanchez who brought us back from a bigger deficit in the biggest game since SB III and gave us a chance to win but we lost at Pitt. what is the point?

As expected, it was an exercise in futility to try to shine a light for someone who would rather sit in the dark. You are so goddam sure of yourself, you didn't even bother to open your precious Google screen to attempt to educate yourself. Have a nice life, asshole.
