the images are from 2 great games,. one win and one loss. the Minny game that was right after we stopped them on the 2 pt conversion attempt to tie it w/ no time left and the bottom one was the '98 opener at SF.
Remember, BP left our cap in awful shape. that offseason we only could field a competitive team b/c of the expansion draft allowing Glenn, Coleman and Young to go to Houston. Farrior had one good year for us in 5 seasons(which happened to be his contract year) and he wanted more money. we had to go cheaper, took a chance on Cowart and he was good for a while including helping us win a division but Farrior turned into a PB caliber player in Pitt.
Cowart was a hell of a player coming out of FSU; problem was he was not quite the player his was after his achilles injury. If I remember correctly (not sure), wasn't this when the Jets were trying to address their cap issues by either releasing (Marvin Jones, Victor Green, Shane) or letting guys go the FA route (Farrior, Glenn, Coleman).
they had a terrible cap situation heading into the '02 offseason(following the '01 season). they were saved w/ the expansion draft where Hou took the entire cap hit of Glenn, Young and Coleman. this saved us and gave us plenty of cap room but cost us 3 quality starters. we did let Green go, Marvin was still on the team. we allowed Farrior to leave and we signed Cowart, Garnes, Beasley, etc...
Geezuz--Marshall, Dent, Otis Wilson, Singletary, Hampton, McMichael, Perry, Fencick, Duerson--what a defense. And one of my favorites of all time Sweetness on the other side--a shame they gave the ball to Fridge on the goal line instead of Payton--he should have gotten a SB TD--would have loved to have seen him go airborn. Loved that team. _
Fencik/Plank were a great pair of safeties together....Ditka stated he didn't realize Walter Payton had not scored...so he let a 320lb novelty item score...what a jackass
I loved Walter Payton, one of my favorite non Jets of all time but I hated how he handled not scoring a SB TD. all the years they sucked early in his career and he was about to hoist the Lombardi but he was so pissed about a selfish act of scoring a TD in the SB rather than celebrating the accomplishment of being a SB champ.
