According to Nyjunc, Parcells was a crappy GM who coached up a talented squad (that had the worst record in the league for two consecutive years). Bill Belichek or any talented coach could have easily done the same thing. Please let me know if you meant anything other than that. Let's look at a few key pieces that this crappy GM added (just spare parts right) to this dominant juggernaut that Rich Kotite built for him: Vinny Testaverde QB - Former #1 overall pick, multiple pro bowls, easily one of the top five QBs in team history Kevin Mawae C - Pro bowler every year with the Jets except one, should be in the HOF Curtis Martin RB - One of only three Jet players to ever make the HOF Chad Pennington QB - Pro bowler, top five QB in Jet history John Abraham OLB - Multiple pro bowls as a Jet before getting us Nick Mangold in a trade Shaun Big Cat Ellis DE / DT - 10+ year career as a starter for the Jets Jason Fabini LT - Round four pick started at RT before learning the LT position from Jumbo Elliot Jason Fergeson NT - Parcells found this brick wall in round seven of the draft Ryan Young RT - Quality starter also drafted in round seven Laverneous Coles WR - Top 10 WR in Jets history drafted in round three Randy Thomas G - 10+ career as a quality starter Pepper Johnson ILB - Started every game in magical 1998 season James Farrior LB - Started for us before becoming pro bowl player in Pittsburgh Rick Lyle DE - Started almost every game here under Parcells before helping New England get their first SB (thanks Herm!) Bryan Cox LB - Two great years here as a starter before helping New England win their first SB (Thanks Herm!) Anthony Pleasant DE - Third Jet player to succeed here before helping Bellicheat win the big one Roman Pfifer LB - Fourth Jet player to succeed here before helping NE Shane Burton DT - Quality starter for two years, blocked tons of passes Ernie Logan DT - Started 37 games in four years here Tom Tupa P - Pro bowl punter and sometimes QB Otis Smith CB - After he bolted the Jets for NE in 1996 , Parcells brought him back Jerome Henderson FS - started two years here under Parcells Anthony Becht TE - One of the best blocking TEs we ever had Todd Berger, Kerry Jenkins, etc. - Parcells shuffled the line a few times but rebuilt it to block out the sun despite only inheriting Jumbo Elliot
In 1999, Tupa signed with the Jets as a FA from the Patriots. The Pats used that 6th round comp pick for Tupa to draft Tom Brady.
I don't xpect them to put up 30 PPG very postseason game but they have averaged 14 PPG in all their postseason losses- that's not good. you can't have great units everywhere on the field, they had what they thought was the best QB in the game and a great offense w/ a good D. should have been enough to win multiple SBs.
Vinny: great signing but signed him as a BACKUP. can't give genius points for that. Mawae: great signing Curtis: great signing even though it cost us a boatload Chad: Groh was in charge of 2000 draft Abe: see Chad Ellis: see Chad and we had to give up BB and Keyshawn for 3 extra 1st rounders that year Fabini- rare nice pick Ferguson- only dropped b/c of failed drug test Young- quality player, had to give up in 2002 b/c of cap hell BP left us in. Coles- Groh pick Thomas- nice pick Pepper- seriously? Farrior- inherited #1 overall pick., yarded down and acquired Farrior who had ONE good season for us. Lyle- nice role player Cox- another depth guy who we caught lightning in a bottle w/. one of reasons our cap was in bad shape was b/c he gave Cox free money walking out the door. Pleasant- nice player, was here only 2 years Phifer- good player, was here only one year for 8-8 season Burton-Groh signed Logan-2 yr starter Tupa- best punter we have ever had- had him only ONE season Otis- was hated when he was a Jet previously, acquired off scrap heap and had bad '97 and great '98 season Henderson- seriously? Becht- Groh pick, Jet fans hated him Jenkins- nice job turning him into a player Berger- here one season this is all you got? a man who inherited the #1 overall pick and had 31 picks from 1997-1999 which saw us trade down and skip on future HOFer Orlando Pace for a guy who had 1 good seasons in 5 years for us and saw those 32 picks turn into mostly guys out of football w/in a year. great job BP. On top of that he killed our cap so we had to give up Glenn, Coleman and Young a year after he left. Most of those guys on that list were here very briefly, he had no eye on our future. he is an all time great HC, an all time mediocre GM type.
you can't give credit for Testaverde because he was signed as a backup but Belichick is a genius because he drafted Brady to be a backup in the 6th round? I stopped there at point number 1 because its obviously biased and ridiculous
That's the playoffs, it's gritty and there's plenty of defense to be played. Maybe the defense could've stepped up or the running game like they did in their SB season. You can't tell me, you can pack a Colts team with Peyton in his prime and expect to win under any conditions. Wherever that be in Foxboro in the cold or even our stadium. Like I've said 100 times already, they had issues stopping the run, as well as establishing the run. You can't have great units on the field, but it's essential to have a line that can at least put a dent in the run game. It wasn't a good D.
they lost a million home games too, it wasn't just outdoors they lost. 14 PPg isn't going to cut it and his Ds allowed less PPG than the "great" Pats Ds w/ Brady. the difference btw Indy/NE in the 00s was at QB.
It was mainly the defense that had far better players then anyone in Indy. How many times did Ty Law make Peyton his bitch? How many points did the Pats defense / offense generate because of Ty Law back in those SB days? Brady didn't have to carry the team like Peyton did.
He definitely cost us Belli. I'm convinced 100% he cost us Peyton. There is nothing but wild speculation and hopeful (lol) guesses to suggest he cost us Brady. He totally stepped in shit with Brady, has admitted himself that he wasn't worth a 5th rounder and didn't take him until his THIRD sixth round pick. We didn't have 3 sixth rounders in that draft. We had 1. We wouldn't have had the picks to take him. But I guess if we're recreating history, it's quite possible if Belli doesn't take Brady in the 6th, nobody else in the NFL takes him so Belli DEFINITELY takes him in the 7th. Because it was destiny. I'm just guessing that's the theory. _
His 3 interception game against the Colts was one of the most impressive post-season performances of all time. Going off games, I remember: - Jets playoff game; Chad really did some damage in that first half; defense was awful for the colts - I would say that 1 playoff game against the Steelers; when they were 1 and done - NE game w/ Ty Law's 3 INTs [running game or defense didn't come through] The SB run was really the only time Manning had a sufficient team around him - that's offense / defense and special teams
it was also one of the worst ever by a big time QB. go through the playoff losses, see how many you'd primarily blame the defense for. Ty was a good player, I think Peyton helped to elevate him to a status he didn't really deserve.
I already went through the playoff loses, I counted at least 3 off the top of my head. They are still leaning on Peyton to throw 40 50 times and expect 30 points on the board. Ty was a good player, not a great one, but Ty played really well in those games. 9 career interceptions on Peyton Manning.
