I don't disagree but the only HOF QB from that era that has more INTs than TDs is Joe Namath so no matter what O you were in you didn't have to throw more INTs than TDs. Stabler had some great season ad put up modern day comp % and ratings in his day, he was also part of some of the most memorable plays in pro football history as well as being the leader of a famous franchise. I would have no problem w/ Stabler in the Hall b/c he made up for the INTs w/ other categories including wins, he didn't have a losing record on any of the franchises he played on.
You are wasting your breath with 100% spot on observations. Some fans look purely at stats in a vacuum and don't understand context. Especially those that didn't see him. They see the INTs to TDs or the comp % and say--"see, overrated, not that great, mediocre, got in because of his story". And continue to force it down our throats until we accept it. No one is saying he's one of the greatest QBs ever. But he had a great career and is a deserving member of the Hall of Fame. _
I don't disagree that if he could had stayed healthy he would had been a better QB, but as we know health plays a part in getting into the HOF. What I would like to know how many people on here? Would still say he belongs in HOF? If he played for the Pats,Fins or Bills? Not with the Jets.
I do believe he belongs for all he meant to the game and it wouldn't matter which team he was on, if it was strictly based on what he did on the field he wouldn't be in.
I'm sorry to me the HOF is about what you do on the field. Even the year the Jets won SB he still threw more int's then TD's. If the Jets won SB this coming season and Geno had more int's then TD's.? And said the Jets will win the game the week of the SB? How many people on here would give Geno credit for winning the SB? Or getting the Jets to the SB?
it wasn't about winning A Super Bowl, it was the significance of that game and everything he meant to the growth and popularity of the sport. SB III is probably the most important game in pro football history and he brought fans to the seats, eyeballs to the TV sets and changed the game for the players and fans.
He played on mostly bad teams. But he was only on the plus side of Tds vs picks in '65 and '69. Sure that SB vs the Colts and his brash prediction were historical and it helped get him in. Imo if he were on better teams like the Cowboys his stats and performance would have been better. He was drafted by the STL Cardinals of the NFL who were up and down during that time period. Joe could have actually been a part of Air Coryell. So instead of hurting him I think it would have helped him. But "what ifs" don't count.
Holy crap. If Geno came into the league and won the Rookie of the Year, the Pro Bowl as a rookie, made the Pro Bowl his third and fourth year, was the MVP his 4th year, threw for what amounted to 6000 yards in his 3rd year (before any other QB had ever done that) and he engineered the Jets to a SB win in his 4th year with Namath's EXACT stats, he'd be a conquering hero. Why do you insist on trolling the thread with non sequiturs involving the one of the worst QBs in the Jets franchise and the greatest QB in the Jets franchise? Namath didn't just show up at the SB one day off of pumpkin wagon and win the SB MVP. He was the best QB in the AFLs history and his road there was meteoric. I weepz for the children. _
The way I see it. He was the best player on that team. I always thought that he threw too much and too many picks. If Shula had been the Jets head coach. A much better record.
the PB thing for Joe is a little silly to bring up, the AFL was desperate for attention and Joe gave it to them plus they only had 8 teams and 3 QBs made pro bowl. Joe made the PB 4 times in the AFL and 1 time in the NFL. played 5 seasons in AFL, 8 in NFL In 1967 he made the pro bowl despite throwing away the Jets season and costing them a div title. I wouldn't discuss pro bowls.
Weeb was under .500 and Shula way over .500. There is no comparison. Shula is a top 5 coach and Weeb was ok.
Weeb is 1 game over .500 for his career and much of that had to do w/ his first few years and last few years w/ the Jets. Shula was better but Weeb still was a HOFer and won as many championships as Don including beating Don's heavily favored Colts in SB III. **edit** Actually I was incorrect, Weeb has MORE championships than Shula. Weeb has 3, Shula 2.
You're right about Weeb's overall record. But with the Jets he was in the .400's. I don't think it was close. The Jets or any team would have been better with Shula.
Shula was one of the best no doubt, the point is he still had a HOF coach for the majority of his career.
All I'm saying is that if the Jets had Shula not Weeb they wouldn't have been under .500. And Joe Willie would have been on better teams. And maybe had better numbers. Pure speculation.
