it doesn't make him right or wrong, we all have different opinions but you can't look up overrated lists w/o seeing Joe there. I know Babe Ruth was great, never saw him play. I don't need to give up anything, no one else needs to share the same opinion. Like it, don't like- it doesn't matter to me. I like to deal in reality, the reality is he did not have a great career. Injuries were the biggest reason why but durability counts. you can keep saying that all you want but where have I brought up stats? where is my main argument about stats alone? I do compare his #s to players of HIS ERA but that isn't the entire basis for him being overrated. usually great players need great #s or a lot of wins- he has neither.
Excellent post! Spot on. As someone famous said, "A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing." Sometimes, people have no knowledge, and yet somehow still think they know it all or are experts. It's part of our culture today. There are people who have absolutely no experience or education in a particular area of expertise, yet they prolifically mouth off as if they have 5 PhDs on the subject. All they do is show how ignorant they are.
you guys are the ones living in the land of make believe trying to discuss the what if's of him playing today which is impossible to know but what we do know is he wasn't durable in his era and had a mostly mediocre career on the field.
I know, "you had to see him play!". the argument of everyone who loved a certain player who wasn't as good as they remember.

this notion that the game is not incredibly tough today is beyond comical. the QBs are protected more but they are still incredibly tough and get hit at higher rates of speed by bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic players. just look at that shot on Brady from Calvin Pace in the '10 playoffs. how many QBs could have w/stood that shot?

You're entitled to your opinion, but not all things are a matter of opinion, and sometimes our opinions can make us look like asses. Some things are facts. FACT - Joe Willie Namath is one of the greatest QBs of all time. He deserves to be in the HOF for his talent and his play, and not just because of SB III. You can choose not to accept that fact and stick to your "opinion" but as the old saying goes, "opinions are like assholes...everybody's got one." Basing your opinion of Namath on reading a few "overrated" lists, watching a few film clips, etc., doesn't give you any accurate picture of what kind of player he was. It's intellectually lazy, shallow and ignorant. It's delusional. You don't know what you're talking about. You are entitled to keep that ignorant opinion, but a wise man would keep it to himself when discussing it with a bunch of people who lived through that era, and while not "experts", we certainly have a lot more knowledge and experience and are more qualified to analyze/assess what type of player Joe was than you or some punk kid who made up a list based on stats. You said yesterday that you enjoyed the peaceful discussions. If you really meant that, you need to at least think about keeping some opinions to yourself. If you stop and think about it, you'll know I'm right. You have to decide whether you like arguing more (your own words) or being able to post peacefully and getting along with everyone. It's your choice. I'm telling you this trying to be a friend to you. You alienate people, keep them from liking you or being willing to agree with you on other issues or points, when you get like this on Namath and some other subjects. I don't like putting people on ignore. As you can see, I've taken you off and am giving you a second chance. I like posting in peace. I don't like getting in hassles with people, but when it appears to me that people are being intentionally unreasonable, argumentative just for argument's sake, insulting, rude, act in a stupid, boorish manner, or expound on something where they have no idea what they're talking about, it is preferable to me to put them on ignore so I can read the board in peace and enjoy it. I'm sure others are similar. Certain topics are inflammatory. I've learned that I don't always have to respond to every post or every poster, and as a result, I have been able to avoid a lot of problems, and getting myself all worked up and upset, as well as other posters.
the mere fact that you have to go back to the 2010 playoffs to come up with a big hit on Tom Brady should tell you something. Hits like that on QBs used to occur weekly..
except that is NOT a fact. I HATE talking realistically about Joe, Brady, Marino, etc... I wish Joe was as good as Brady and Marino but he wasn't. I don't base anything on any lists. I don't care if you put me on ignore. All I did was state my OPINION and back it up. if that bothers you I cannot help you. I have not bashed you or anyone else. I am not a liar, I cannot lie and tell you I think Joe is one of the greatest of all time. I am sorry if that bothers anyone.
You're judging him based on today's game and standards. You're missing the point. For that era, his play and career were NOT mediocre!!!!
