Well looked at the radar and thought we might get in another hour but sky's are looking like auntie M and thundering in the distance and getting closer,,,,dog just ran for its life and now 10 kids that were in pool are now in my house
Major cloudburst in Redding CT from 4:30-4:45 or so. Lightning strikes all over the place. We had at least 5 visible as ground strikes in a very short period of time. One tree down in the woods behind the house. Huge tree split down the center by the lightning. Another tree down across the road. This was a huge tree but not ancient. Not sure if it was hit by lightning because there was no visible damage on it or charring. I was sitting in the living room looking out through the floor to ceiling windows when the storm rolled in. We had wind gusts that swayed 75 foot trees and sounded like drumming on the roof. Then sideways rain for a good 10 minutes during which all the lightning happened and the trees came down. The rain actually reversed direction a couple of times and there were pauses where it looked like a very heavy mist for a second or two before reversing again. There are 2 or 3 roads in Redding that are completely inaccessible at this point due to three specific treefalls across the road. The scary thing is that we cut down most of our old growth that was aging out 2 years ago after the last big storm. This one brought down healthy trees and very large ones at that. I'm guessing that the waterlogged ground had something to do with that. We're so lush at this point that we're verging on rainforest status. It's possible that some of the trees were just uprooted by the high winds, including the one across our lane.
First storm burst has passed through. Power kept flickering off and on. Distant thunder. Lots of South Jersey is without power.

Edge...I have not read the article....but have seen nothing except below normal predictions based on the current setup. What this setup MIGHT allow....is a storm to make its way up north....but the thinking has always been below normal. Will read article when I free up.
I was being a bit tongue in cheek The article says the same thing, that there won't be much activity this season.
Lol....started reading it and quickly discovered that. Hey...who knows...if activity stays light through the next several weeks, they will be correct. Still, a setup like they described....sometimes....leads to a rare bird that heads north. Not a Sandy track...but an up the coast track that resembles a Noreaster. It would have to beat back the wind shear that has setup in the southeast. No small feat.
What usually happens early in an El Nino event in terms of storms? We've got one of those setting up now in the Pacific and it's likely to play out over the next couple of years. What happens in terms of droughts and cloudbursts normally when El Nino is in play? I figure we can get way out ahead of CNN and Fox News on this and then just listen to them join the party in September or whenever.
There is the million dollar question. It's one that is a guess at this point. A strong El Nino has been associated with flooding rains in California. A moderate to low El Nino has a history of low rainfall to droughts on the west coast. Strengths have given the mid-Atlantic and northeast above average temps to record snowstorms. To answer your question brad, the current El Nino is low...but expected to strengthen. So the current pattern we are in should continue. Very limited development of any tropical systems...temps slightly below normal. The huge question is what happens in the fall. Does El Nino continue to strengthen and give California much needed precip....perhaps more precip then they even want. A strong El Nino has given our area some of the warmest winters with snow amounts under 12" for the entire winter. I can remember one such winter in the 80's where come March 1st, NYC hadn't recorded one snowfall over 2". Personally? And I can be way off...I think unless you have a strong El Nino...it's blown way out of proportion. Also think mother nature has a way of giving those that need the rain...the rain. If that's the case, California plays catch up this winter...and some of us in the east will be driving golf balls this winter. Think that sign will be given by October. ..if we start hearing about much needed rains in California. There are already rumbles of near misses out there with current t-storms....which could be the heads up here in the east...and bad news for winter storm nuts like myself lol. I posted about this and the long range predictions back a page or so. The long range predictions for Massachusetts on north for another ugly winter are farfetched. I really doubt that. The setup for this winter is either great lakes or a more potent dip in the jet stream south....giving NYC to Virginia the track. If it's the great lakes track....we will be wearing light sweaters this winter...with little if any snow.
Someone told me that in 16 weeks it could be snowing again, I Did the math and they might be right ,enjoy the heat all,,,just saying. Lol
